A HISTORY OF ISA KAITA COLLEGE OF EDUCATION DUTSIN-MA, 1991-2015

ABSTRACT
the “History of Isa Kaita College of Education, Dutsin-Ma, 1991-2015” is the main focus of this book. The study critically analyzed the college’s history and development from its founding in 1991 to 2015. This is due to the fact that the institution was founded in 1991, and the year 2015 marked a significant turning point in both the college’s and Dutsin-overall Ma’s histories. In fact, the goal of this research is to reconstruct the college’s history, including how it came to be located in Dutsin-Ma town and how it developed. The essay goes into greater analysis of the college’s contributions to education, society, and politics. Primary, secondary, and tertiary sources of historical reconstruction were used in this study. In addition, the study looks at some of the challenges facing the college and possible way forward.

CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
In general, Christian missionaries’ efforts in the Southern regions of the nation in the 1840s might be linked to the history of western education in Nigeria[i]. During that time, the European Christian missions launched their initial, fruitful forays into the southern regions surrounding the Atlantic Ocean. The establishment of western education in Nigeria as a result of the missionaries’ efforts and the part played by Frederick Lugard, the then-Governor General of Nigeria, has had an impact on the current educational system in Nigeria. Yet, the missionary effort of educating the locals was initially limited to the specific goal of generating Nigerians who were only moderately literate, preferably only in their own mother tongues.  The primary goal of the missionary schools was to raise up schoolmasters who would eventually become catechists, deacons, and priests. The failure of the foreign Christian missions to have a large educational impact on the Muslim emirates of the north, however, makes it crucial to emphasize that western education in northern Nigeria was not entirely successful in the 19th century. [ii] It is crucial to remember that most of Northern Nigeria had a long history of reading dating back to roughly nine hundred years before the arrival of the colonial powers. From the 17th century, Katsina in Northern Nigeria has been regarded as a center of study since it has produced eminent academics like Muhammad b. al-Sabbagh bn Muhammad al-Kasnawi al-Arabi, also known as Among those well-known for their expertise in the Qur’an, Hadith (tradition of the prophet Muhammad S.A.W.), Islamic law, Arabic grammar, poetry, history, philosophy, astronomy, astrology, and other subjects were Dan Marina and Muhammad b. Masani (Dan Masanih). As early as the 15th century, many historians and explorers had written about the inflow of Islamic scholars from the West and North African region. But in the early 1900s, Western Education was brought to Northern Nigeria. [iii] In Western education, there appeared to be a fifty-year gap between the North and its Southern counterpart, however in Islamic education, there was a seven hundred year difference. With the opening of Katsina College in the North in the year, the Secondary Education [iv] Because the northern protectorate lacked a Western-educated elite to occupy the clerical positions in the offices of government ministries, the College was established there to meet the manpower needs of colonial administration.
In 1921, Katsina Teachers College was primarily founded to prepare instructors for the Northern provinces. The College was upgraded to Katsina Higher College in 1929 with a focus on manpower development as the demand to enlist Northerners into the Civil Service increased. [v] In the case of Dutsin-Ma, Sada Primary School was the town’s first elementary school and served as a turning point in the development of Western education in Dutsin-Ma town. It was founded in 1929 by the British colonial authority. The educational colleges are the “train-the-trainers” universities sought to educate and produce competent educators whose guiding principles are openness, honesty, compassion, and tolerance. They were created in order to solve Nigeria’s overall NCE teacher shortage. In light of this, Isa Kaita College of Education Dutsin-Ma was founded in 1991 as the College of Education (Technical) Dutsin-Ma by Colonel Yahaya John Madawaki, the state’s former military governor, with the main goal of solving the deficit of science and technical teachers in the primary and secondary schools.
