AN EXAMINATION OF THE EFFECT OF DRUG AND RELATED SUBSTANCE ABUSE ON STUDENT STUDY HABIT

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The issue of adolescent drug and substance abuse is a global health concern that has been recognized by numerous organizations including WHO, RED CROSS, and others. It is a global issue that affects everyone, including Nigeria. Since the beginning of time, herbs, leaves, and plants have been used to treat and manage ailments. Medication use does not pose any risk in and of itself, because drugs, when administered properly, have been a boon (Falco, 1988), as stated by Sambo (2008) Adolescents’ physical and psychological development can be permanently harmed by chronic drug use. Medications can be beneficial or harmful depending on how they are used. A drug is a substance that, through its chemical action, can cause harm. cause a shift in biological activity (Okoye, 2001). It is also believed to be a chemical that alters perceptions, cognition, emotion, behavior, and other bodily processes (Balogun, 2006). As a result, they can be considered chemical moderators of living tissues, capable of causing physiological and behavioral changes (Nnachi, 2001). Drug abuse is a serious public health issue that affects people worldwide (UNODC, 2005). Adolescent drug use and misuse has emerged as one of the most serious public health issues in Nigeria and around the world (NDLEAR, 1997). Several school-aged adolescents are either temporarily or permanently enrolled in a mental health program. Some people go insane, become ill-adjusted to educational conditions, and eventually drop out. When a medication is taken for its intended purpose It is considered a medicine for its positive purpose; however, the term drug should be reserved for drugs of abuse and addiction, such as alcohol, cocaine, heroine, cigarettes, and other similar substances. Schoolboys and girls, as well as youths aged 15 to 30, are a high-risk group in Nigerian drug law enforcement, with females becoming more involved than they used to be. According to Ibaf (1985), 82.6 percent of psychiatric patients admitted were between the ages of 11 and 35. So, drug abuse is defined as the use of drugs in a way that differs from medical prescriptions or socially accepted behaviors, and has immediate or long-term negative consequences for the individual. According to medical records, some people have

drank too much alcohol and died as a result (Balogun, 2006). Many herbalists have caused irreversible harm to their patients by overdosing on herbal medicines, and some people have consumed too much Kolanut or coffee, causing damage to their Central Nervous System (CNS).

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

Drug and associated effect misuse affects adolescent students from the moment they enter higher education or secondary school. Many of these problems are the result of different homes or a lack of parental attention from either the mother or father (Sambo, 2008). His broken home causes a slew of problems for their children or children. The researcher is currently attempting to determine what causes adolescent

Drug and other substance abuse among students, particularly in schools (Nnachi, 2001). Finally, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of drug and associated substance use on the study habits of students in the Biology Department at Jigawa State’s Federal College of Education.

1.3 STUDY AIM

The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of drug and substance abuse among students in the Biology Department of the Federal College of Education in Miga, Jigawa State, as well as the issue that mitigates the effect of drug and substance abuse on teenage students. Finally, viable solutions or recommendations to the problems and their consequences for students should be proposed.
