AN EXAMINATION OF THE IMPACTS OF FIELD TRIP STUDIES ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN BIOLOGY

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1   Background Of Study

Field trips are a crucial component of curriculum that is based on standards; they are not a separate activity, but rather a logical continuation of classroom instruction. Since an instructional medium is defined as “anything (materials and equipment) that enables the teacher to communicate his or her ideas effectively to the students, such that at the conclusion of the instruction, the student can do what the teacher stated in the objectives,” Awotua-Efebo (2009) claims that field work is a type of instructional medium used today. Actual items (specimens, models, excursions, fieldwork, etc.), projected or unprojected images, printed or unprinted materials, etc.

Essentially, a biology field trip is viewed as an addition to effective instruction rather than as the main focus. According to Awotua-Efebo (2009), the objective should be effective teaching.

which she defined as “getting the information across in a teaching that achieves the targeted objectives.” He also said that successful teaching occurred if, at the end of instruction, the student achieves what the teacher desired through the assessment process.

Additionally, by interacting with experts in the field and the environment, secondary school biology field trips were intended to improve students’ learning experiences. Given that learning outside of the classroom aims to ensure that all children have access to high-quality outdoor learning activities, these centers were meant to provide more trustworthy information sources than the school (James, 2015). It also sought to improve interdependence, develop skills, and improve academic performance while allowing for the acceptance of diverse viewpoints in a growing range of contexts. of suitable levels of risk. The process, according to many detractors and observers, is a waste of time and effort and does little to raise students’ performance in biology. On the other hand, field trips might lead to decisions that change your life, according to Rickinson (2004). It offers a great opportunity for personal growth, including the growth of independence, self-esteem, self-confidence, and teamwork, and may help to broaden horizons both physically and educationally. It is important to acknowledge and support these opportunities for biologists that could change their lives. Field activities can be very effective at fostering mutual understanding between teachers and students, which can increase the effectiveness of learning and provide motivation that transfers or persists after class, whereas pressures and demands are frequently the focus of attention.

the practical knowledge. Hillcox, S. (2003). In light of this, this study will look at how field trip studies affect students’ academic performance in biology.

1.2 Description Of The Issue

A field trip is an essential part of education because it improves the efficiency of instruction and learning. Because it requires significant funding, this aspect of teaching may occasionally be ineffective due to a lack of resources directed in that direction (Helomu, 2016). It’s possible that the majority of biologists lack any travel suggestions for their students. Last but not least, while numerous studies have been done on how field trips affect biology students, none have looked at how they affect other subjects.

the biology students’ performance in Aba, Abia state. Therefore, this study closes the gap.

1.3 Study’s Objectives

This study’s main objective is to evaluate how field trip studies affect students’ academic performance in biology. Consequently, the study will focus on the following particular goals:

1. Determine whether field trips in secondary schools improve students’ understanding of the biology curriculum.

2. Determine whether field trips in secondary schools spark students’ interest in the biology curriculum.

3. Examine whether field trips help students in secondary schools perform better academically in biology.

1.4 Research Prompts

The following inquiries will serve as a guide for this study;

Does a field trip improve students’ understanding of the biology subject?

secondary institutions?

2) Do field trips in secondary schools spark students’ interest in the biology curriculum?

3. Do field trips help students in secondary schools perform better academically in biology?

1.5 Importance Of The Research

The study on the impact of field trips on students’ academic performance in biology will allow the government to fund field trips to help students learn since biology is more practical than theory; additionally, since students cannot easily forget the things they see, such as in a “movie,” such that they can tell you from the beginning to the end without forgetting anything, the same thing applies to theory in class and field trips. The research

will also help the government hire and prepare qualified biology teachers. Finally, the study will provide a foundation for future research as well as new knowledge and literature in this field.

1.6 Study’s Purpose

The overall goal of this study is to look at how field trip studies affect biology students’ academic performance. But the study will also determine whether field trips aid in improving students’ understanding of biology in secondary schools, whether they spark students’ interest in biology in secondary schools, and whether they enhance students’ academic performance in biology in secondary schools.

As a result, the study will only focus on a few senior secondary schools in Aba, Abia State.

1.7 Restrictions of the study

While conducting the study, the researcher ran into some minor obstacles, just like in every human endeavor. Due to a lack of resources, the researcher was only able to choose from a small number of sample sizes when looking for pertinent materials, literature, or information, as well as when collecting data. Even more so, the researcher worked on this study and other academic projects at the same time. The time needed for research will be cut down as a result.

Definition Of Terms 1.8

Impact/Effect: A modification that arises as a result of some action or other cause.

A field trip, also known as an excursion, is a trip taken by a group of people to a location outside of their usual surroundings.

Performance/Achievement: An action that is completed successfully
