ABSTRACT

The construction of a computerized transport management information system was the subject of this research project, which included a case study of Akwa Ibom Transport Company in Uyo. Because the manual way of storing transportation information makes it difficult to retrieve when needed, the system was required. Reports take time to prepare; to address these issues, an automated system is required to allow supermarket management to quickly gather and store transportation data in a database, allowing for quick access to reports when needed. Visual BASIC 6.0 is the programming language that was used to create the system.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

The transportation community has seen the beginnings of a cultural shift toward integrating transportation system management and operation into our work ethic and culture. Manufacturers, distributors, and third-party logistics firms all have unique requirements and methods for moving goods and products from source areas to factories, distribution warehouses, and retail or client locations. The movement of goods between sites is typically regulated by automated transportation systems, which are software applications. Companies will look for an automated transportation system that suits their current and anticipated operational needs and can be seamlessly connected with existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) or corporate financial systems to promote better transportation efficiencies. Transportation Management Systems that allow users to handle inbound and outbound freight shipments via roadway, rail, and air are referred to as automated transportation systems. Users can now use automated transportation systems to produce shipment documents, find the best rates, and handle transportation expenditures. It’s a component of supply chain management that deals with transportation. A typical scenario for the deployment of an automated transportation system involves the evaluation of procurement and shipping orders by the planning module, which then provides the user with numerous suggested routing options. The user assesses the solutions for reasonableness before passing them on to the transportation provider analysis module, which determines the optimal mode and lowest cost provider. Following the selection of the best source, the solution usually continues on.

The ability of shippers to plan, execute, analyze, benchmark, and constantly improve product flow management is always expected to improve with an automated transportation system. The capabilities and focus of tools designed for the logistics function are changing to meet new demands as organizations that are growing quickly have connections to different consumers in different locations. The following are some of the most common requests:

ü More cost-controlling tools

ü Metrics for continuous improvement

ü Best-mode decision support that is automated

ü Increased visibility of shipments

ü The automated transportation system’s own affordability.

Theoretical Background

Organizations are always in need of efficient systems to help them manage their day-to-day operations. Questions like, “How do I drive long-term savings?” How can you accomplish more with fewer resources? How may flexible rating/routing be used to reduce transportation costs? How may routing tools be used to achieve the most efficient and balanced loads? The question of how to increase performance execution and assure on-time delivery by leveraging transportation best practices is one that is frequently raised. Because such challenges can be solved utilizing a computer system and careful programming/networking, software developers have used algorithms that synchronize with the transportation operations of the involved establishment.

 Statement of Problem

The following issues triggered this investigation:

a. Without the use of computers and communication networks, manually recording transportation management tasks is inefficient.

a. Difficulty in collecting transportation records reports

d. Errors in accurate transportation bill information computation

Aims and Objectives of the Study

The study’s goal is to create a computerized information system for transportation management. The following are the study’s objectives:

1. Create software for an automated transportation system that works.

2. To develop a mechanism for entering transportation records into a database.

3. To create a method that can be utilized to calculate transportation bills accurately.

4. To create a system that can be used to collect transportation records reports.
