ABSTRACT

The goal of this project is to create a Web-based distance learning system that allows instructors and students to fully participate in distant learning activities while being geographically separated. The goal of this project is to design and implement a remote learning system that will be delivered via the internet. This article goes over the background research on distance education as well as the many types of delivery technologies that are used. It also goes into the benefits and drawbacks of distance learning. It also includes advice on how to succeed at distant learning and who should pursue it, as it is not suitable for everyone. This project details the development and implementation of a novel, low-cost remote learning system.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Education is the path to achieving a long-term change in human behavior. It is the major tool for preserving, maintaining, and improving people’s culture, standards, and qualities. Education is a vital tool for determining innovative progress and passing on existing physical knowledge to new generations in any developing society. Training also serves as a platform for introducing people to any organization, providing skills for doing day-to-day tasks, recreation, and instilling strong ethics in individuals for their own benefit and that of the wider public. In summary, education is the stage at which people of a younger generation get an understanding of the past while also taking an active interest in and contributing to the development and advancement of society. Education has traditionally been done in segregated buildings by well organized and uniform classes of pupils and teachers all around the world. This has ramifications for both the teacher and the student. For example, education is clearly limited to those who can be in the classroom and follow the instructor’s pace with which he introduces his lectures. However, the ever-increasing population explosion across the continent, as well as the diversity of educational systems in every region of the world, has posed greater challenges to this method of education. For example, there is a scarcity of people and material resources to support the massive population’s education. In many places, the number of school-aged children has exploded to the point where only a small percentage of them can be admitted. The student-to-lecturer and student-to-classroom ratios have increased to the point that classroom instruction and learning have become less effective. Since the late 1960s, when computers were first introduced into schools, the field of education has provided the most exciting application of computing systems, attracting substantial attention from educators and policymakers. Various information technologies, such as Computer Aided Instruction (CAI), Computer Aided Learning (CAL), Research Packages, Project Monitoring, and Computerized Libraries, have been used in learning and teaching. A remote learning framework brings education closer to people while removing the pressures and demands that characterize traditional classroom learning. The separation of teacher and learner in geography and/or time, the student’s management of learning rather than the distant instructor’s, and non-adjacent communication between student and teacher, mediated by text or other forms of technology, are all hallmarks of distance learning. Distance education, at its most basic level, is a process in which a number of lectures are delivered by lecturers who are located far away. On-line and off-line distance learning are the two types of distance learning systems available. On-line distance learning, also known as virtual classroom, is a sort of learning system in which students work independently at home or at work and connect with faculty and other students via email, electronic conversations, videoconferencing, and other forms of PC-based correspondence. Offline distant learning is a multi-campus system in which a university or polytechnic establishes multiple campuses, each of which may be centralized or decentralized.

 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Education plays a critical part in a country’s development, and countries like Nigeria, who have a huge population, outdated technology, and a small number of instructors, must invest more in this section to ensure that citizens are taught in both quality and quantity. One way to do this is to increase the number of colleges with enough human and material resources. Even so, this may not be enough to meet demand because there are always students with special needs that institutions cannot meet, and establishing a university is a costly and time-consuming operation. As a result, providing distance education with existing institutes and academicians may be the ideal option. However, the delivery of distant education in Nigeria, which primarily relies on paper and classrooms, is so passive that there is no contact between students and tutors. One of the elements that impacts the quality of distance education is the absence of interactivity. Using a variety of techniques, computer assisted distance education can provide the missing interactivity. In addition to interactivity, such a technique can give students with progressive follow-ups and avoid distance obstacles when delivering materials. As a result, the goal of this project is to develop a web-based distant education system that will alleviate or reduce the stated constraints of remote education.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The study’s major goal is to Design and Implement a web-based distance learning system for NOUN University, with the following goals:

Deliver course materials on schedule and in a variety of formats (audio, text and video).
Exams can be taken online.
Provide information about future events.
Produce a grading report.
Make a chat room available.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The goal of this study is to create and implement a web-based system for distance learning that uses new technology as a significant instrument to improve educational quality at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Nigeria.

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

During the course of the research, I faced the following key obstacles:

Obtaining information
a scarcity of time
There are a slew of other issues as well, such as a bad Internet network
