CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the workplace. Its impact has been significant in the construction industry, however it varies by sector. Within each particular country’s total economy, the construction sector plays a critical role. While the exact nature of that role will differ greatly from one country to the next, in developing countries, the extraction of raw materials and on-site construction activity are likely to be of primary importance as the country seeks to establish significant infrastructure in the form of roads, railways, and buildings. Construction activities include residential and non-residential building construction, remodeling, maintenance, and demolition, as well as work on civil engineering projects such as roads and utility systems (ILO 2015). The World Health Organization (WHO) officially designated it a global pandemic in March 2020. (WHO 2020). COVID-19 is thought to be spread through respiratory droplets that come into contact with the mouth, nose, conjunctiva, or eyes (UNICEF 2020). To combat the spread of the virus, countries were forced to implement total lockdowns of virtually every type of gathering place, stay-at-home measures, and, at the extreme, forcing construction workers to leave their work sites and abandoning important projects.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The entire globe ground to a halt when the covid-19 epidemic broke out. This pandemic had an impact not only on human health but also on the operations of businesses and organizations, including the construction industry. Professional bodies such as CIOB, RICS and the likes in an attempt to preserve “construction businesses” are rolling out strategies to enable smooth sailing and transition into the new dispensation. The “Roadmap to Recovery” prepared by Construction Leadership Council (CLC) requires the construction industry to ‘reinvent’ by safeguarding ‘construction businesses’ and work . The goal of this research is to see how the Covid-19 lockdown affects Nigeria’s building industry. The goal of this research is to examine if the Covid-19 lock has hampered the building industry’s activity. The study also looks into whether construction sectors had access to raw materials. The study also looks into whether the covid-19 lock down had an impact on income generation in the building industry.
Significance of the study
The entire study would be beneficial to the general body of knowledge. It would be beneficial to the building industry since this study would allow them to develop effective strategies to address the issues that the industry faces in the post-covid-19 age. Furthermore, it will inform professional bodies of construction industry leaders about the need to organize training for their members in order to prepare for the implementation of COVID-19 safety guidelines. Finally, this study will pave the way for more research into the variables that influence speech.
Research Question
1. Has the Covid-19 lock caused construction sectors to be hampered in their work?
2. During the Covid-19 lockdown, did construction sectors have access to raw materials for construction?
3. Has the covid-19 lockdown resulted in a decrease in revenue generation in the building sector?
Scope of the study
The purpose of this study is to look into the impact of the Covid-19 lockout on Nigeria’s building industry. Geneks Nigeria Limited, Lagos State, is the focus of the research.
LIMITATION OF STUDY
Financial constraints– A lack of funds impedes the researcher’s efficiency in locating relevant materials, literature, or information, as well as in the data collection process (internet, questionnaire and interview).
Time constraint– The researcher will be working on this study while also doing other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.
Despite the limitations mentioned above, the researcher worked diligently to ensure that the study’s goal was met.
Definition of terms
COVID-19: Corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an illness caused by a new corona virus known as SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2).
