EVALUATING THE BENEFITS OF BROADCASTING IN IMPROVING ADULT LITERACY IN LAGOS STATE

ABSTRACT

This research was done to assess the advantages of broadcasting in raising adult literacy levels in Lagos State. Radio and television are examples of broadcasting media that are used to distribute audio and video signals, messages, information, or programs to a broad audience. Via a variety of educational channels and programs, radio and television currently contribute to the non-formal education of the public, but there is substantial room for growth in terms of how well they can support adult learners’ curriculum building and subject learning. The objectives of this study are to ascertain if adult learners in Lagos State are aware of educational radio and television programs, to examine adult learners’ access to such programs, and to explore the obstacles that prevent students from using such media for learning. 222 adult learners were polled via questionnaire about their knowledge of and access to seven educational radio and television programs. Despite having access to instructional radio and television programs, the research found that students were unaware of them.

. The study makes two recommendations: producers of educational broadcasts for radio and television should raise enough awareness about their programs so that students can follow them at the appropriate times, and secondary school teachers should incorporate educational broadcasts as forms of stimulus variation into their lessons.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1   Background of the Study

Education has been defined as a means of promoting the acquisition of knowledge, abilities, qualities, convictions, and propensities, includes attending, preparing, engaging in storytelling dialogue, and conducting coordinated examinations. Although students can also teach themselves, instruction is most frequently provided by instructors. Any event that changes the way one thinks, feels, or behaves can be considered as instructional, whether it is formal or informal. Our daily lives revolve around media and communication, whether it is in the classroom, at work, at home, in public, or while traveling from one location to the next. Every now and then, whether through television, radio, newspapers, magazines, mobile phones, personal music players, video games, computers, or the internet, we are separated from interceding sound, picture, or word. This can happen both when we are alone and when we are among other people. We continue to be educated, entertained, and informed by broadcasting. It also strengthens relationships with friends and social networks, translates our general environment, and provides resources for the development of personalities and the creative mind.

It is crucial to note that the media provide a variety of print, electronic, and film possibilities, supported by a number of consumer and presentation platforms. On the other hand, “cross media” refers to the concept of disseminating the same message over many media outlets. A convergence in the delivery of adult education programs is how a comparable concept is expressed in the information sector. As a result, the usage of media is equally as crucial as having a positive and encouraging learning environment. The media has significantly improved our ability to communicate and strategize. As dogs can also communicate, you might make decisions based on what your dog tells you, such as when she barks and you give her food.

This general concept also suggests that your dog may be reacting to your dog’s information. You go into the room to feed them, wag your tail and jump in the air, waiting for dinner. The focus of this project is communication as an important aspect of learning through the media so that you can beautify your research across disciplines or disciplines.

Adult education is a concept that does not have a universal acceptable definition, due to the fact that the word “adult” does not have a general acceptable definition. To some adult education is said to be education for the aged simply known as (Eko-agba). But the concept of adult education is wider and broader than that in clarifying these views, some scholar’s such as Seya (2005) posits that adult education is a transmission of process of general technical or vocational knowledge as well as skills, values and attitudes which takes place out of the former education system with a view of remedying early education inadequacies of mature people or equipping them with knowledge and cultural element required for their self-fulfillment and active participation in the social, economic and political life of their societies.

Moreover, Bryron (1936) was referenced in the study of adult education (1997p. 7). Any human endeavors that have an educational goal and include individuals going about their daily lives.

According to Merriam and Broket (2007), who were cited, adult education is defined as activities that are specifically created to affect change among persons whose ages, societal roles, or self-perception characterize them as adults. In addition to the definitions offered above one can, therefore, for now, safely say that broadcasting and adult education are intertwined, these is because they both focuses on “mass education” for example broadcasting creates an awareness and also aim to bring about change in behavior, attitudes and perception of the audience, while adult education is any purposeful effort towards self-development, carried out by an individual without direct legal compulsion and without such effort becoming his major field of activity. From this, adult education is directed towards educating and enlightens the mass in order for them to be self-developed and create awareness in them to participating fully in the society they belong.

Although there are still some nations in Africa without television or radio, the empire of broadcasting has virtually overrun all continents. The number of people who do not consider broadcasting to be one of the things they cannot live without is fairly small. With such tremendous impact on our lives, it can have both positive and negative effects. On the other hand, radio can be utilized as a mutual communication tool to inform the public and learners about the acquisition of skills to enhance their general well-being and economic standing.

1.2   Statement of the Problem

Another contemporary communication tool that allows us to quickly reach a large number of adult learners is radio and television. These approaches enable effective communication even with illiterate individuals. But, compared to print media, it is transient. It has the power to aid students in overcoming social and cultural disadvantages. It is impossible to overstate the enormous contribution that broadcasting makes to the enlightenment of the public. Information isn’t the same as education. Adult education is material that has been carefully structured and has predetermined goals.

Schools or colleges serve as the main sources of adult education in our neighborhood. Moreover, broadcasting serves the same purposes as adult education facilities. For the community of adult learners, broadcasting serves as a lifelong educator. They provide us with in-depth knowledge of the chosen subjects. We can get a thorough understanding of a topic from non-news or news-based content like editorials, articles, and columns in newspapers. Another example of adult education through the media is health programs. Recently, educational radio programs have started publishing and airing instructional supplements for adult learners, allowing educators to directly contribute to our educational system. In this study, the effectiveness of broadcasting in raising adult literacy in Lagos State will be assessed.

1.3   Objective of the study

This study’s main objective is to assess how broadcasting contributes to adult literacy improvement in Lagos State. Other particular goals include:

1. To determine which educational broadcasting programs Lagos residents are familiar with.
2. To learn about the educational broadcasting options available to Lagos people.
3. To determine how frequently Lagos people access instructional broadcasts.
4. To look at the restrictions on using broadcast media.
