INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Merriam Webster English Dictionary, a school dropout is someone who stops going to school or abandons school before finishing their school years because they do not believe in its rules, customs, or values. A school dropout is defined as a student who leaves school too soon. These students who leave school early are unable to pursue a graduate degree.

The significance of comprehending the implications of school dropout cannot be overstated, as it poses a critical problem for the educational sector worldwide. Secondary school dropouts are most common in schools with underdeveloped facilities and infrastructure. According to Ajaja (2012), the country is in a state of high instability. result of illegal activity. According to surveys conducted by both print and electronic media, young people who have dropped out of school commit more than 85% of all illegal acts in Nigeria. This news has piqued the interest of all well-meaning Nigerians. This suggests that our educational system is in trouble and that it urgently needs to be refocused and restructured in order to meet national goals. According to Ajaja, the reasons why students drop out of school can be classified into four categories on a global scale (2012). These include school-related problems, job-related problems, family-related problems, and community-related problems. In their study, Frendenberg and Ruglls (2007) identified twenty-four variables in the family cluster, three in the group cluster, and twelve in the school cluster. study. STATEMENT OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

The concept of school dropout has been an alarming issue for most students in the world’s underdeveloped and developing countries. Nigeria, for example, has a record high rate of students dropping out of school due to a variety of factors such as poverty, parent loss, a lack of funds, and so on. This is a major problem among male students in rural areas, particularly in public schools.

Not only do these male students’ individual lives suffer, but society as a whole suffers as they drop out and engage in other unscrupulous or dubious activities in order to make a living or survive. Certain internal and external factors, such as a lack of basic necessities, poor infrastructure, and so on, influence these individuals to make such a decision, which will undoubtedly have an impact on them and society.

1.3 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVES

The primary goal of this research is to examine the factors that contribute to school dropout among male students in public secondary schools. This study focuses on:

1. To investigate the causes of school dropout among male secondary school students.

2. To investigate the impact of male students dropping out of school.

Not only do these male students’ individual lives suffer, but society as a whole suffers as they drop out and engage in other unscrupulous or dubious activities in order to make a living or survive. Certain internal and external factors, such as a lack of basic necessities, poor infrastructure, and so on, influence these individuals to make such a decision, which will undoubtedly have an impact on them and society.

1.3 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVES

The primary goal of this research is to examine the factors that contribute to school dropout among male students in public secondary schools. This study focuses on:

1. To investigate the causes of school dropout among male secondary school students.

2. To investigate the impact of male students dropping out of school.

Parents recognize the importance of paying close attention to their children in order to understand how they are treated at school. The study will also be useful in the academic world because it will supplement other written works and provide an opportunity for the researchers to broaden the scope of this study.

1.6 STUDY OBJECTIVES

This study focuses on male students who dropped out of public secondary school. The research will be conducted at a randomly selected public secondary school in Lagos state, Ojodu berger.

1.7 THE STUDY’S LIMITATIONS

This study’s limitations were primarily time and money. The researcher did not have enough time or funds to visit all of the secondary schools in Lagos state.

1.8 OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF THE TERMS

1. School: An environment or structure created for individuals to gather and apply knowledge.

2. School dropout: In this study, a school dropout is someone who drops out of school too soon.

3. Students: Individuals or persons who attend schools are considered students in this study.
