FACTORS THAT AFFECT STUDENTS’ CHOICE OF TEACHING AS A CAREER

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This study focuses on professional autonomy concerns, and identifying professional autonomy in teaching implies that education specialists are fully involved. Professional colleagues in all areas of education are frequently appointed to positions of responsibility to designate how educational policies in Nigeria should be managed, despite having little or no understanding of professional training and competency (Adufe, 2008). Teaching as a career is viewed as a loose confederation group of major components performing specific tasks, according to Factors influencing choice of teaching as a career, journal of educational research association vol. No. 1, University of Benin, which states that teaching as a career is viewed as a loose confederation group of major components performing specific tasks. A group of major components that perform specific tasks, often with little or no coordination among professional members. Ekiadolor, a student at the College of Education, is considering teaching as a career, but a number of factors are influencing her decision. Many people take on instructional responsibilities without ever receiving basic professional training or training from any of the professional schools, and many education students haven’t really considered their true motivations for becoming teachers (Adepoju, 2006). Many education teachers see their professional preparation or teaching as a stepping stone into teaching for students who believe they lack the ability and intellect to read lucrative courses such as medicine, law, or engineering. Teaching will be used only as a last resort. in order to prepare for a professional career. Some education students see teaching as both a dumping ground for the less intelligent and a stepping stone to a better vocation. This group of people lacks commitment and respect for the value and goals of teaching, which stifles the flow of ideas for true or genuine professional advancement (Rubba, 1981). Many teachers in Nigeria today, as well as education students, would not openly declare that they are teachers, causing problems with teacher identification among students at Ekiadolor College of Education. An investigation into the factors that motivate people to choose teaching as a career will help to correct some of the misconceptions and will confirm or deny some of the popular beliefs.

In deciding what career to pursue, consider some of the criticisms leveled at teaching. Several motivators can be summarized as follows:

i. The country’s labor market, which many people believe influences them to choose a job for which they are not naturally qualified.

The second factor that may influence people’s decision to pursue a particular career is the nature of the work itself. After a day’s work, the job may offer plenty of free time.

iii. The salary offered for a particular job either attracts or repels applicants.

According to Afe (2002), becoming a teacher is fraught with difficulties and problems from the moment one decides to pursue a career in education.

education. According to Awake (2002), one factor influences teaching as a career: teaching is a thankless profession in terms of pay. His pay has always been less than the bare minimum. The pay is so low that it barely covers the expenses. This includes his accommodation, food, medical care, clothing, and transportation.

Among the issues to be investigated are low pay, a lack of appropriate textbooks, insufficient teaching aids, and a lack of assistance and counseling.
