IMPACT OF DATABASE DEVELOPMENT ON SECONDARY EDUCATION MANAGEMENT

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Undeveloped and developing countries have suffered greatly as a result of a lack of data or information, which most often takes the form of data inaudibility. Structured, coordinated, and adequate relevant data is the key to excellent management. This finding supports the database ideal, which emphasizes the importance of providing the user with relevant and adequate data or information.

According to French (2000), consumers urgently require far-reaching information that will be of tremendous assistance to them in their business; thus, a database in any organization or structure is critical to the organization. Data can be stored in a database, which can directly involve data and provide descriptive information about the data stored in the database as well as how to retrieve it.

The term database refers to

Information is frequently used as a synonym. A database is frequently composed of data from multiple databases, but it can also be a collection of related information.

Brien James A Brien James A Brien James Brien James’s A Brien James A Brien James A Brien James (2000). This software (a collection of instruments that instruct the computer what to do) is designed for record keeping and allows computers to organize files of records into specific locations. They organize structural data in a spatial manner that would normally be kept in a file cabinet. The term “database” can refer to anything. The collected data must have specific characteristics; the primary need of a database is not only to store data efficiently, but also to provide access to it.

to provide an effective means of retrieval. The goal is to provide accurate, up-to-date demand statistics. If it cannot be obtained more efficiently than others, the data structure of a business may be rationalized. Despite the fact that the base is in a logical section, data can be obtained.

Education, without a doubt, promotes and enriches cultural, social, and economic growth in all communities by providing individuals with the means to improve their health, skills, knowledge, and ability for productive labor. Many years of research have provided overwhelming evidence that education plays a critical role in the development of growth. However, maximizing student learning in educational institutions with limited resources is one of the most difficult educational tasks. This necessitates ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the educational learning system through the collection and examination of data and information utilized in the process of educational decision making. The goal of information-based decision making in education system administration is to improve educational access, efficiency, effectiveness, equity, and quality through effective monitoring and evaluation, budgeting and planning, and policy research and analysis systems. EMIS facilitate informed choices by providing necessary data and information and fostering an environment in which the need for this information drives its utilization. Integrated data and information systems are at the heart of EMIS development because they support educational management functions across the education system. The generation of educational data and information is a fundamental pillar upon which this information-based framework is built.

Decisions are formed.

STATEMENT OF THE STUDY 1.2

In light of technological evolution, many government organizations and establishments, as well as some private establishment management and preservation, have seen the benefit of having an information database, but little attention has been paid to this phenomenon in the field of education. Databases and their management systems have become well-known as the compiler has advanced. Few organizations and establishments have become aware of this concept and have begun to employ it, while others have remained ignorant. As a result, the post-primary educational database of the administrative, admission, and information management departments is inspected and studied on this basis, with the following concerns in mind:

Anyanwu (2015) asserts that if secondary education software can be developed, By monitoring enrollment rates in comparison to school leavers, it will assist administrators in maintaining databases of admission, graduation, academic performance, and dropout difficulties. According to Okeke (2019), the number of applications for education administrations increases geometrically as the day progresses, resulting in a slight delay in record processing. Thus, due to the growing size and complexity of the establishment, time consumed and wasted in retrieving required file or records, stocks vomiting search process, lost of records in transit during a search process, the method of updating files makes the while exercise being and cumbersome are all problems glaring at Nigeria education system; thus, secondary education software development is required to maintain international standards. Based on this premise, the researcher

aims to investigate the impact of database development on secondary education administration

1.3 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The study’s overarching goal is to investigate the impact of database development on secondary education management. The study will specifically address the following objectives:

i. To ascertain the nature of education operations in Nigeria. Secondary schooling

ii. To determine the implications of a manual secondary education system.

iii. Determine whether the development of an electronic database will improve secondary education management.

iv. To look into the significant advantages of database development in secondary education management.

1.4 HYPOTHESES FOR RESEARCH

The following hypotheses guide the research:

Ho1: The manual system of operation has no impact on secondary education.

Hi1: There is an important implication.

of manual system of operation on secondary education.

Ho2: The development of electronic databases will not improve secondary education management.

Hi2: The development of electronic databases will not improve secondary education management.

1.5 THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

The study’s findings will be important to the government, education stakeholders, and school administrators because they will shed light on the need to investigate and design a computer-based operation system to replace the current manual system of operation in secondary education by instilling the efficiency of database to information management and data processing in areas of data upkeep, retrieval validation, storing, updating, and verification. This is because software development will improve decision making by speeding up the processing, storing, and retrieval of information.

of manual system of operation on secondary education.

This is because software development will improve decision making by speeding up the processing, storing, and retrieval of information.

will also help to reduce the amount of paper in the office. However, the study is limited to the Lagos State Secondary Education Board.

1.7 THE STUDY’S LIMITATIONS

The researchers encountered minor constraints while conducting the study, as with any human endeavor. The significant constraint was the scarcity of literature on the subject due to the fact that it is a new discourse, so the researcher incurred more financial expenses and spent more time sourcing for relevant materials, literature, or information and in the data collection process, which is why the researcher resorted to a limited sample size covering only staff in the Lagos State Secondary Education Board. As a result, the findings of this study cannot be generalized to other states in Nigeria. Furthermore, the Researchers who are involved in this study while also working on other academic projects will be unable to devote their full attention to the research. Nonetheless, despite the constraints encountered during the research, all factors were minimized in order to provide the best results and make the research a success.
