ROLE OF MEDIA IN EAMERGING DEMOCRACY

ABSTRACT

Given their crucial contribution to governance as a watchdog and a partner in advancement with other branches of government, the media are an essential agent of development in any country. The mass media played a crucial role in delivering and consolidating the current democratic experience in a developing nation like Nigeria. This study explores the role that the media have played and are still playing in the socio-political and socio-economic reengineering of institutions in a nation that is struggling with serious issues that hinder its ability to function as an emerging democracy to its full potential. In order to shed light on the concerns raised, the study uses historical and analytical approaches as its methodology. In the conclusion, it urges the urgent passage of the freedom of information bill (FOIB) into law and recommends that the Nigerian government abolish all legislation that have stymied the Nigerian media.
