ABSTRACT

This research looked into the impact of terrorism in emerging countries, specifically the importance of terrorism to development and advancement in Nigeria. The study specifically looked at the impact of terrorism on Nigeria’s economic progress. The report also looks at terrorist groups’ operations in Nigeria from 2012 through 2021.

between 2012 and 2021, describe the causes that contributed to the development of the Boko Haram terrorist group in Nigeria. Finally, the study looks into how terrorism has impacted Nigeria’s development and advancement. The historical research design was used in this study. The study incorporated both primary and secondary sources. The studies demonstrated that terrorism has an impact on direct economic destruction, market uncertainty, and long-term economic growth. Terrorism is feared around the world because of all of these criminal characteristics. Nigeria is currently dealing with the devastation caused by the Islamic cult Boko Haram, which is mostly active in the country’s northeast. As a result, the study recommends that in order to put a stop to Nigeria’s raging inferno of terror acts, not only the government, but also other stakeholders whose interests in the country’s long-term success could be jeopardized if the country is overrun by terror gangs, whatever their names or motivations may be. In order to annihilate or checkmate terrorism in Nigeria and generate the requisite breathing room for industrial development, the international community, church organizations, civil society, business community, and others must conflate their roles.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Terrorism and insurgency are becoming household words around the world, as no country is immune to their effects. This is why, according to Rourke (2015), war, terrorism, and other forms of global political violence are, in many ways, more dangerous today than they have ever been, as civilian casualties have risen. However, developing a singular meaning for the term “terrorism” is challenging. The problem stems from a lack of agreement or a cohesive viewpoint among governments or researchers on what constitutes a terrorist attack. As a result, terrorism has been alternately portrayed as a tactic and a strategy; a criminal and a holy obligation; a reasonable response to tyranny and an unforgivable abomination, because it is a function of oppression. The rising number of terrorist strikes in various sections of the country, with unfavorable effects for the economy and growth of the country. The federal government of Nigeria committed a large allocation to security in the 2013 budget to address the threat to national security and combat the expanding waves of crime, and the national assembly passed the Anti-Terrorism Act in 2011. (Ewetan, 2018). Despite these efforts, the country’s degree of terrorism and instability remains high, as seen by Nigeria’s low ranking in the Global Peace Index (GPI, 2015). Despite a slew of security measures adopted to confront Nigeria’s overwhelming difficulties of terrorism and insecurity, the government’s efforts have failed to provide the intended good outcome.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The development of the Boko Haram insurgency has given a previously unseen terrorist component to Nigeria’s criminal landscape. The cult has carried out a series of bombings as well as kidnappings of innocent people. The terrorist spree did not spare even the United Nations Building in Abuja (Ewetan,2018). Terrorism has a significant impact on national economy in both affluent and poor countries. It is unavoidable that the economic impact of terrorism would be felt more strongly in low-income monocultural nations than in highly advanced, diversified industrial economy (Ewetan,2018). As a result, if the country’s terrorist problem is not addressed, it could lead to increased investor apathy and a decrease in foreign direct investment (FDI). The root of the problem and the remedy is a country’s political, economic, and social insecurity, which incorporates all development goals and challenges. Terrorism must be addressed in order to carry out successful development programs. It was considered that any government should strive for security by protecting its population from structural violence, crime, and social insecurity as a goal. All goals for progress, whether economic, political, or social, will fail if residents are not safe. Terrorism is a problem in Borno State that has an impact on policies and development. Criminality must be reduced to the bare minimum in any country attempting to progress.
