Introduction

1.1 The Study’s Background

The number of people who are dependent on social media has significantly increased in recent years. It’s troubling because there’s a chance it will negatively effect the academic performance of the many students who will be impacted. According to Karpinski and Duberstein (2010), academic accomplishment as determined by student grades is a top objective for senior secondary schools. It is projected that students who spend a lot of time on social networks get dependent on them, which will negatively affect their academic performance. According to research (Moon, 2011), students’ academic performance declines when they use Facebook Messenger and Twitter extensively during class. Additionally, most students don’t finish the schoolwork assigned by their lecturers and instead waste their time online or using electronic gadgets to chat with friends. As they view internet browsing as more important and fun than studying their extensive lecture notes, they also demonstrate little interest in doing so after school. As a result, their academic intellectual achievement is rapidly dropping. Research findings from 2012 (Jomon) indicate that students’ use of social networks has a statistically significant negative correlation with their academic success. This has taken the place of the previous habit of reading late into the night. According to Loken (2011), academic settings can benefit from the use of social media, which are internet-based platforms that promote communication and knowledge sharing. They stress that the time and effort students invest in cooperative and instructional activities is referred to as student engagement, and that this involvement is typically linked to outstanding student learning outcomes including critical thinking and individual student development. According to a survey on students’ academic performance by Nalwa (2003), they prefer to use the internet for personal tasks. Expanding on this research, Karpinski (2009) discovered that students who used social networking sites performed worse academically than those who did not interact with others. In order to retain information from a distinct or transient source, such as an oral discussion at a meeting, a lecture, or a lesson, note-taking is necessary. In some cases, the notes will serve as the only documentation of the event. It is a form of self-control as well. The majority of students now avoid taking notes in class because of the influence of social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp (Moon, 2011). These social networking sites are background-running instant messaging applications for various communication devices. iPads and smart phones are two instances of communication technology devices. These habits of tweeting and facebooking, among other things, cause the students to lose focus and fail to take down any important information from the lesson. This reduces their ability to absorb the information being taught and has a detrimental effect on their academic achievement. It is believed that using social networking sites while studying or doing homework lowers a student’s grade point average (GPA). Students who multitask between academics and social networking sites are 20% less likely to receive high grades than students who do not have a social networking site within visual range, claims Enriquez (2010). Napoleon (2014) claims that students who utilize social networking sites are seeing a continued deterioration in their marks. The rapid use of social networking sites by Kano metropolis students raises some pertinent questions about how these sites affect students’ academic performance. Karpinski (2010) found that students who use Facebook have worse grade point averages and spend less hours per week studying.

1.2 Statement of the problem:

Some people think that since social networking sites first appeared in the 1990s, pupils’ academic performance has suffered greatly. There is divergence, distraction, and split focus between their academic work and social networking activity. Seni (2012) found that students paid greater attention to social media than to their academics. So, how do social networking sites effect senior secondary school students’ academic progress in Kano Metropolis? is the research question for this study.

1.3.1 Purpose of The Study

The purpose of this study is to determine whether social networking sites have an effect on the academic performance of secondary school students. This study’s specific objectives are to look into the effects of:

Internet research on senior secondary students’ opinions toward taking notes

ii. How Facebook has affected how students feel about their tasks.

iii. How WhatsApp affects students’ concentration in class.

1.4 Questions For Research

What effect does the internet have on students’ views regarding taking notes in senior secondary school?

ii. How has Facebook affected students’ attitudes toward their homework?

What effects does WhatsApp have on kids’ attention in class?

1.5 Relationship to Other Studies

Researchers, students, teachers, parents, and the general public should all take note of this findings. Since it will result in a degree in statistics and computer science education, it is crucial for the researchers. Additionally, it will give academics insight into how social networking sites affect academic attainment, enabling them to counsel people in their community on how to prevent negative outcomes. The study’s findings will help students better understand the adverse effects of their use of social networking sites on their academic performance and how much time they spend on them in compared to other activities. This might be done by presenting the study’s findings to pupils, teachers, and parents at seminars and via different PTAs (Parent-Teacher Associations). The study’s findings will also help parents understand how much Facebook and the internet have impacted their kids’ academic performance and how to help them focus more on their studies at home. The results of this study will assist instructors better understand why some students perform poorly in school and how to address these concerns, which makes it significant for them as well. Seminars and various Secondary School Parents Teachers Associations (PTA) will be used to inform students, teachers, and parents about the study’s findings. Additionally, it will provide pertinent materials for students and other academics working on related issues.

1.6 Analysis Of The Study

The scope of this study is only a few senior secondary schools. situated in the Markurdi local government.

1.7.1 Term Definition

The following are some significant search terms that were used in the study:

Social networking sites – A website where users can upload and exchange personal information.

Social networking is the practice of communicating with others online and exchanging information about oneself, particularly with those with whom you have a common interest.

All media technologies intended to reach broad audiences are referred to as mass media.

Computers are electrical devices that take in data, process it, and then output information that can be preserved for use or reference later.

WhatsApp is a well-known messaging app for smartphones that enables users to exchange messages that can be text-based, visual, auditory, or link-based.

Facebook is a social networking site where users may share texts, articles, and images while also getting in touch with old friends and relatives.

Cell phones, PCs, notepads, tablets, and other electronic gadgets/devices are utilized to access different social networking sites.
