THE INFLUENCE OF HOME VIDEOS ON THE SOCIAL LIFE OF ABIA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

The study’s main goal is to look into the impact of home recordings on the social lives of Abia State University students. The research used a survey research design, with data gathered from both primary and secondary sources. The study enrolled 147 undergraduate students from Abia State University (ABSU) in Uturu, Abia State, using the convenience sample approach. The recruited respondents were given a self-structured questionnaire, with 141 of the instruments being retrieved and validated for the study. The results of the field survey were evaluated using simple percentages, frequencies, and tables. The Chi-Square statistical tool was used to conduct the hypothesis test (Spss v.2.3). According to the findings of the study, the incidence of home video exposure among Abia State University students is high. Furthermore, watching home videos will have a huge impact on ABSU students’ social lives. The study concludes that the Nigerian Film Censors Commission should devote significant resources to scrutinizing films before they are released to the general public, and that script writers and directors should always keep Nigeria’s cultural heritage and national unity at the forefront of their minds when writing any script.

Home video is one of the most powerful media tools, and because it is so widely used, it has the potential to affect any society’s culture, particularly among the younger generation. The home video industry distributes films, telemovies, and television programs to the general public in the form of videos in various formats. Consumers buy or rent them and view them privately from the comfort of their own homes. The majority of theatrically produced films are now available on digital media, both optical (DVD or Blu-ray) and download-based, mainly replacing the VHS (Video Home System) format. In Asia, the VCD format is still prevalent, however DVDs are gaining popularity. Movies have a unique place in a people’s culture: “Movies, like books, are a culturally unique medium…an vital means of cultural transmission” (Baran, 2009:75). According to studies, movies help with socialization and cultural transmission (Baran, 2009; Daramola, 2007). Aldana (2004:1) contributes that “movies are a potent instrument that, due to its conversational nature, can construct or destroy a people’s culture.” It also affects men and women’s daily lives by influencing how they view and imagine themselves, as well as how they live their lives.”

There are about one million home movie audiences in Nigeria who are impacted in some manner by the issues handled in Nigerian home movies. These films convey messages that have an impact on the audience, most notably on their clothing choices. Movies occupy a unique position in a people’s culture.

Statement of the problem

Nollywood, or the Nigerian home video industry, has a vast active following and is nearly a part of every Nigerian society. Many Nigerians are concerned and concerned about the impact of home video on culture, religion, and moral behavior among university students. Many adolescent and teenagers in higher institutions, according to Okeoma (2012), riveted their eyes to the television viewing movies of various kinds. Some films may have a negative impact on their emotional, psychological, moral, and cognitive development. The types of programs and movies that kids watch have been connected to the incidence of immoral behavior. According to recent research, the high rate of crime in Nigerian institutions and society as a whole may be linked to the influence of negative movies or videos that people watch. For example, Ezekwu (2013) said that the screening of pornographic films or their inclusion in most Nigerian films has harmed many young people and exposed them to various sorts of sexual harassment, including homosexuality and incest, to name a few. Adultery, witchcraft, and ritual acts are glamorously depicted, and most young people are unconcerned with the conclusion of the practice, which is usually presented at the conclusion of the film. The dissolution of marriages and families is being trivialized. Even while some maintain that it is only for entertainment and hence does not create any significant moral problems, much fear lurks in the domain of Nigerian traditional values and culture. The truth and reality of the video industry presents us with a scenario that requires immediate action; so, a study on the impact of home films on the social lives of Abia State university students is required.

Objective of the study

The study’s main goal is to look into the impact of home recordings on the social lives of Abia State University students. The study is looking for:

1. To find out how common it is for university students to be exposed to home movies.
2. To see how watching home videos affects Abia State University students’ lifestyles.
3. To determine the elements that influence ABSU students’ perceptions of home videos.
4. To determine whether watching home videos has a major impact on ABSU students’ social lives.

Research Hypotheses

HO1: Home video exposure is uncommon among Abia State University students.

HI1: Home video exposure is very common among Abia State University students.

HO2: Watching home videos will have no substantial impact on ABSU students’ social lives.

HI2: ABSU students’ social lives will be significantly influenced by seeing home videos.

Significance of the study

Producers, youths, parents, and students at Abia State University would profit from the findings of this study because they will know which Nollywood films influence their social behaviors. The outcomes of this study would be extremely beneficial to the media, particularly the Actor Guild of Nigeria, because the knowledge gathered from these studies will aid in improving the content of Nollywood films. It would enlighten their eyes to the impact that some of their activities have on Nigerian pupils, allowing them to brainstorm methods to limit these practices. The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission would benefit from this research since it will help them improve the way they filter most Nollywood films, particularly those with sexual material. Finally, the study will add to the current literature and act as a resource for students and researchers interested in conducting additional research on relevant topics.

Scope of the study

The focus of this research is on the impact of home movies on Abia State University students’ social lives. It will investigate the prevalence of home video exposure among university students and how home video viewing affects Abia State University students’ lifestyles. It also identifies characteristics that influence ABSU students’ perceptions of home films. and whether watching home videos will have any substantial impact on ABSU students’ social lives. The study is only open to Abia State University, Uturu, Abia State undergraduates.

Limitation of the study

Every human attempt is hampered at some point, and the same was true during the research period. The researcher faced some challenges in conducting this study, including time limits, money constraints, and the attitudes of the respondents. Furthermore, there was the issue of researcher bias. The researcher may have had certain biases, which showed up in the method the data was obtained, the kind of people questioned or sampled, and how the data was evaluated afterward. All of this has the potential to have an impact on the findings and conclusions. Furthermore, the conclusions of this study are limited to the study area’s sample population (ABSU undergraduates) (Uturu Abia State), As a result, the study’s findings may not be applicable to other schools, local governments, states, or countries around the world.

Home Videos: This is a catch-all phrase for pre-recorded material that is sold or rented/hired for home cinema viewing.

Nollywood movies: The Nigerian video film industry is referred to as Nollywood movies in this context, which refers to video films packaged for home viewing by the Nigerian Home Video Industry or the moniker given to Nigeria’s film industry. They are mainly in the video cassette format or the video compact disc format.
