URBANIZATION AND INDUSTRIALIZATION IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study’s main objective is to examine the effects of Kaduna metropolis’ manufacturing industries on the growth of the region between 1957 and 2007. Also, it has had a significant impact on the city’s migration, urban economics, urban development, spatial patterns, formation of classes, and the city’s near surroundings. Consequently, we try to respond to the question: How did the manufacturing sector influence the growth of the Kaduna metropolis?

This is crucial given the transformation of the Kaduna metropolis, particularly in terms of spatial parameters; values, attitudes, and population growth of the citizens, brought about by the shift in economic prominence from agricultural to manufacturing. For instance, from 39,000 in 1952, to 149,000 in Kaduna practically doubled in size within a decade.

This area’s tremendous expansion can be attributed to the need for workers in the industries, which has led to an explosion in the business and service sectors. The formation and quick development of satellite communities in the Kaduna metropolitan area is also significant. Due to the proximity of the textile industry, two of these villages, Makera and Kakuri, were changed from rural settlements into modern sub-urban neighborhoods. As a result, Kaduna, also known as the “Manchester of Nigeria,” transformed during this time from a military fortress and administrative town to an industrial city.

CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This chapter serves as an introduction to the research project entitled Urbanization and Industrialization in Nigeria: A Case Study of Kaduna Metropolis, 1957–2007. The chapter shall be structured as follows to fulfill this goal: The study’s introduction, goals and objectives, statement of the research topic, scope, justification, literature review, theoretical framework, methodology, study limitations, and notes on sources are all included.

1.0   INTRODUCTION

The extensive use of the most recent scientific and technological advancements in production in the thorough technical re-equipping of the natural economy5 might be characterized as industrialization. At Kaduna specifically, this process of incorporating scientific and technological advancements into production resulted in the establishment of a factory in 1957 that cost the Northern Regional Government £1,250,000 and was outfitted with 14,000 spindles and 300 mechanized looms. Therefore, the Kaduna Textiles Limited (KTL) was established6. This was Kaduna’s first significant manufacturing sector. Several large-scale businesses that employed lots of people in the mass manufacturing of commercial or industrial goods followed. Printing, publishing, brewing, vehicle assembly, asbestos-cement products, fertilizers, and petroleum refinery plants are some of the factories in this list.
