AN EXAMINATION ON THE IMPACTS OF STRICT SUPERVISION ON TEACHERS’ EFFECTIVENESS IN SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ADAMAWA STATE.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1        BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Teachers’ supervision is an ongoing activity that aims to improve teaching by providing the services they require. Improving education is a complex process in which many variables must interact. Teachers are central to this process of growth and transformation. Their acceptance of instructional supervision, as well as their interaction with instructional supervisors, serve as the catalyst for supervisory effectiveness in all settings. In terms of the outcomes of the supervision process, it is critical to consider how instructors perceive and think about the supervision that they are performing. The term “supervision” comes from the Latin word “super video,” which means “to supervise” or “to keep an eye on” (Adenaike and Adebanjo, 2000). As a result, “supervision can be considered a method.”

of advising, guiding, reviving, encouraging, stimulating, improving, and supervising specific groups in the hopes of persuading people not to follow incorrect procedures when performing certain functions on their jobs, while also attempting to emphasize the importance of good human relations in an organization” (Akilaiya, 2001:251).

Supervision has traditionally been defined as the improvement of the teaching and learning process for the ultimate benefit of the learner, who is regarded as the central figure in the educational process. In a similar vein, supervision is fundamentally a leadership role, a type of superior subordinate interaction in which a leader or military commander directs and monitors subordinate performance to improve the effectiveness of those under his or her supervision. efficient and

Effective school activities necessitate the use of supervision so that educators can give their all in their various duty postings while also making a significant contribution to the development of learners who will be able to compete globally with their counterparts (Oluwafemi, 2005).

Developing educational excellence has long been regarded as a major goal for most countries around the world. This is because education has been identified as the key to permanently closing the door on poverty and ignorance while simultaneously opening the door to prosperity in terms of economic growth, social development, and civilisation. Because education is viewed as a tool for change as well as a component of development, instructors may be

Students can be thought of as the raw materials from which the changes are realized over time, while teachers can be thought of as the instrument’s operators. However, because they are the main characters on the stage, the contributions of both teachers and students are extremely valuable and necessary to the educational system. Extraneous variables can disrupt school plans and patterns of operation, as well as the teacher’s personality and attitude toward his or her work. Depending on how they are handled individually or collectively, these variables can have either positive or negative effects on the school system and its end results.

The supervision process is complex, and it pervades every aspect of the educational system’s organizational structure. There appears to be little or no area of activity within the school where monitoring would not be required, though the level of supervision may vary from one area of operation to the next. Teachers have been accused of divided loyalties, a casual attitude, and student indiscipline. It has also been established that teachers and students are separated. The past and the present are constantly compared, which is especially true when comparing the actions of government or volunteer organizations, as well as school inspectors, in the past and in the present. Parents are frequently dissatisfied with their children’s or wards’ inability to communicate effectively in languages other than their mother tongue. As a result, they think that the school system is rapidly losing its luster and focus, which has an indirect impact on the achievement of the nation’s educational goals. As a result, these concerns must critically examine the critical areas of school administration that require supervision, namely the instructional and disciplinary areas. Both the content method and mode of delivery, as well as the personalities of both students and teachers, must be evaluated in these areas to ensure that they are appropriate for the school system (Ajibade, 1993). Students serve as the raw materials to be changed in a teaching and learning environment. Persons responsible for converting a child in school are those who have been chosen as the most academically competent individuals to participate in this channel of communication.

transformation. Furthermore, highly skilled masters are promoted to the position of department head in order to coordinate the efforts of the instructors involved in the instruction of their many specific disciplines.

Assuring the appropriate function and mutual interaction of both human and non-human resources engaged in child processing is critical to ensuring that all authorized school staff work in unison to ensure effective school supervision. The negative effects of supervision may result in a situation in which the supervisor is no longer objective but rather subjective, and this subjective supervision may result in a situation in which both the principal and the teachers put forth their best efforts to satisfy the supervisor, only to have their efforts withdrawn. at the conclusion of the supervision period. As a result, a type of eye service performance is created in the school. Secondary school inspections must be conducted on a regular and comprehensive basis in order to meet the challenges posed by a rapidly changing school curriculum. Indoctrination of poor curriculum into the minds of students, which if allowed to be taught, will promote “half naked” school leavers who, instead of graduating as productive students, will graduate as liabilities to themselves in particular and to society in general, thus defeating the aims and purposes of educational institutions and institutions of learning. The question of how to make the most of the school system in the face of reduced input has arisen.

It has been a pivotal one for the educational system. The question of how to maximize both student and instructor productivity has been a source of concern both inside and outside of the educational system. For the most part, all members of the public have been concerned about how to make the educational system more responsive to the needs of society, both individually and collectively.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

The study was inspired by recent observations of poor teaching performance among secondary school teachers in institutions where teachers are free to do whatever they want. Academic performance of any student is thought to be an indicator of the effectiveness of the instructors.

in their classes (Ajibade, 1993). The primary goal of this study is to determine the effect of principals’ supervisory roles on the effectiveness of teachers’ classroom instruction. What is the effectiveness of the Ministry of Education’s secondary school supervision function? And how the teachers at each of these chosen secondary schools are carrying out their duties.

1.3 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The study’s overarching goal is to investigate the impact of strict supervision on teacher effectiveness in some selected secondary schools in Adamawa state. The research will be guided by the following criteria:

i. Investigate the reasons for strict teacher supervision in Adamawa state.

ii. Determine the effect of strict supervision on teacher effectiveness in

Adamawa is a state in Nigeria.

iii. To assess the impact of teacher evaluation on job performance in Adamawa State.

iv. Determine whether checking professional documents affects teachers’ effectiveness.

1.4 QUESTION FOR RESEARCH

The following study questions have been prepared:

i. What are the reasons for strict teacher supervision in Adamawa state?

ii. What effect does strict supervision have on the effectiveness of teachers in Adamawa State?

iii. What effect does appraisal have on teacher job performance in Adamawa State?

iv. Does checking professional documents affect the effectiveness of teachers?

1.5 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE

This research would be beneficial to the government, educational institutions, and school administrators. The discovery would shed more light on the significance and effects of supervision on teacher effectiveness.

Secondary school enrollment and population in Nigeria have been rapidly increasing in recent years. The growth in the number and population of secondary schools has increased the demand for qualified and unqualified teachers in the schools.

Furthermore, the study will be useful to the Ministry of Education because it will aid in reviving the issue of falling educational standards as a result of poor administration, which necessitates proper organization and planning. As a result, the society benefits from the study, and it also aids in the effective use of human and material resources available to schools in the society.

Finally, the study will be significant to the academic community because it will add to the existing body of knowledge.

literature.

1.6 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The purpose of the strict supervision of teachers in Adamawa state will be investigated. The study will also look into the effect of strict supervision on teacher effectiveness in Adamawa State. The study will look into the impact of teacher evaluation on job performance in Adamawa State. Finally, the study will look into whether checking professional documents affects teachers’ effectiveness. As a result, the scope of the study will be limited to Adamawa State.

1.7 THE STUDY’S LIMITATIONS

The scope of this study is limited to secondary school teachers and principals in Adamawa State. In a study of this nature, one should expect some difficulties, particularly when gathering the necessary data for the study. Some of these issues are as follows:

Lack

of recognition by teacher about the importance of this research study.

Some of them may consider implicating themselves by completing the questionnaires.

The collection of the questionnaires may also pose a problem because the teachers may misplace them, necessitating the distribution of another set.

Time and financial constraints also contributed to the study’s lack of adequate and comprehensive research.

1.8 TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Supervision is used to ensure that the right thing is done by directing and monitoring. This entails acting as a check and balance on some specially assigned responsibilities.

Teacher: Someone who teaches others what they may not have known previously. A teacher is someone who imparts knowledge to others.

Efficacy: End result produced as a result of a long-term action that is interesting enough to be noticed.
