AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE CHALLENGES FACED BY STUDENTS IN FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES AND SUGGESTED WAYS OF SOLVING THEM

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

It is said that in the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king, and this was true during a time when formal education was not important to the average African. Holders of standard six, the highest level of elementary education, were highly valued. Holders of the general certificate of education [also known as the Cambridge certificate] can advance to positions of management in corporations (Aytac, 1993). However, in a well-known country like Nigeria. It is acknowledged that both the government and the school play a role in the serious-comedic dilemma that students in higher education institutions are facing. There are two arms, and they occasionally disagree and choose to separate. Repeat the same act. This type of quandary is only encountered by students who are aware of the consequences of their actions, not by students who are unaware of the consequences. Instructors have given students the opportunity to sidestep the pattern of moving through a higher education institution as part of a covert strategy to blackmail students. Our personality and behavior are determined by the mental image we have of ourselves. Our college has a number of troubled student groups that are responsible for the continuation of immorality on campus (Aytac, 1993). The majority of the time, we learn about HIV/AIDS from newspapers, magazines, and posters. There are captions. Keep an eye out for HIV/AIDS; our campus murderers want to avoid it for their own benefit. Despite our desire to be educated and earn a degree, our educational institutions admit a large number of students while failing to provide adequate care for them, resulting in malfunction. When students are admitted, they face issues such as housing, transportation, and living conditions, as well as social and inadequate facilities. Higher education institutions are the primary source of workforce required for a country’s growth. In this environment, knowledge and skills are acquired, which is critical to the efficient and successful operation of almost all businesses and offices. It is regrettable that certain

The environment has a tendency to work against them. When a student becomes involved in a problem, it is possible that all of their academic work will become involved in the problem as well (Aytac, 1993).

Difficulties are a natural part of life; a person may face them, an organization may face them, and society as a whole may face a variety of issues. An issue, according to the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, is a difficult question that must be resolved or determined. The problem, on the one hand, suppresses human knowledge while, on the other, putting human comfort and endurance to the test. Those in the student environment, particularly those at I.M.T., face a different level of difficulty than those who are not. campus. They regard the situation as an unusual occurrence that, for the most part, interferes with their academic pursuits. All humans are bound to face problems at some point in their lives, with varying degrees of success in finding solutions. A student who has been admitted to a management and technology institute and is preoccupied with a prospect that every other student is excited about can become infected with a variety of perplexities as well. When a student is accepted (that is, when we issue you an acceptance letter or something similar), he or she does not simply walk into the building and begin studying (Aytac, 1993). His initial step will be

to accept admission and register as an orthodoxy member of the institution, which will be more difficult than he or she expects, though it will not be a major issue for a student who is simply visiting the campus to learn more about the institution.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

With each passing day, science and technology advance at an ever-increasing rate, and the quality of life changes. Recent studies, however, show that young people lack confidence in higher education for a variety of reasons, including a high number of expectations at universities, the inadequacy of the education they receive at universities for finding a job, and psychological and general issues. Today’s University students cannot graduate unless they receive a suitable benefit from their university education and plan their future orientations and ambitions. As a result, they are complex and distinct because they are products of their social, cultural, and economic environments, as well as their social structure. As a result of this scenario, young people resort to criminal activity (Agba, 1993). It is critical to shed light on the situation that young people are in and the issues that they face in order to understand the causes of this skepticism and provide solutions. Identifying current situations and problems, as well as assisting university students in discovering their personalities, sharing responsibilities, developing their social activities and relationships, and

All of this is made much more possible by providing consistent, permanent, and multidimensional services to meet their desires and needs. Solutions must take an acceptable, reasonable approach to both Turkish circumstances and university conditions in order to develop real answers and take solid measures for the future. This is the only way to generate practical solutions and take decisive action in the future (Aytac, 1993). Moving away from their own unique assessments, making a clear and tangible determination of the challenges that university students face would provide valuable input for the development of programs and services geared toward younger adults (Lucas, 1993 cited by Gizir, 2005).

1.3 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The study’s overarching goal is to investigate the difficulties.

faced by students at federal universities, as well as solutions. The research will be guided by the following criteria:

To investigate the obstacles to effective teaching and learning at the federal university.

To determine whether unemployment and worry about the future are among the challenges faced by federal university students.

To develop strategies to address challenges in teaching and learning at the federal university.

1.4 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

The following study questions have been prepared:

What are the obstacles to effective teaching and learning in a federal university?

Unemployment and concerns about the future are among the difficulties that federal university students face.

What are the strategies for dealing with the problems in the

What is the role of teaching and learning in a federal university?

1.5 THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

The study will be significant to university management because it will expose the challenges that students face at the university, allowing them to devise strategies to mitigate these challenges.

The study will be important to the academic community because it will add to the existing literature.

1.6 STUDY OBJECTIVES

This research will look into the challenges of effective teaching and learning in federal universities. The study will also determine whether unemployment and worry about the future are among the challenges faced by federal university students. Finally, the study will develop strategies to address the challenges in teaching and learning at federal universities. As a result, the research will

be restricted to the Federal University of Technology (FUTA)Akure in Ondo State.

1.7 THE STUDY’S LIMITATIONS

The researchers encountered minor constraints while conducting the study, as with any human endeavor. Inadequate funds tend to impede the researcher’s efficiency in sourcing relevant materials, literature, or information, as well as in the data collection process (internet, questionnaire, and interview), which is why the researcher chose a moderate sample size. Furthermore, the researcher will conduct this study alongside other academic work. As a result, the time spent researching will be reduced.

1.8 TERM DEFINITION

Challenges: an invitation to take part in a competitive situation or fight to determine who is superior in terms of

capability or power

A university is a high-level educational institution where students pursue degrees and conduct academic research.
