Anaemia In Pregnancy (A Case Study   Of Pregnant Women Attending Ante-Natal Clinic At Primary Healthcare Centre Abak, Abak Local Government, Akwa Ibom State

 

Abstract

Amaemia in pregnancy is defined by the world Health Organization (WHO) as a haemoglobin concentration below 11g/dl. The most common cause of amaemia in pregnancy is lack of iron, less often, it is cause by folic acid defiency. Although only 15% of pregnant women are anaemic in developed countries, the prevalence of anaemia in developing country increases parental risks for mother and neonates and increase overall infant mortality. In the research study, anaemia in pregnancy a case study of pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at Primary Healthcare Abak, Abak Local Government Area, Akwa ibom state a total number of fifty (50) pregnant women were screened for anaemia and a percentage of 34% was recorded showing a relatively high prevalence.

Introduction

        Anaemia in pregnancy is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a haemoglobin concentration below 11gldl.it continues to be a major health problem in many developing countries and is associated with increased rates of maternal and perinatal mortality, premature deliver, low birth weight and other adverse outcomes.

More than half of the pregnant women in the world have haemoglobin levels indicative of anaemia.

Although only 15% of pregnant women are anaemic in developing countries, the prevalence of anaemia in developing country is relatively high(33% to 75%). The most common cause of anemia in pregnancy worldwide is iron deficiency. The predisposing factors include grand multiparity, low socioeconomic status, malaria parasites infection, late booking HIV infection, and inadequate child spacing among others.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Anaemia is the most common heamatologic, abnormality diagnosed in pregnancy.  It continues to be a major health problem in many developing countries and is associated with increased rates of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality.

Moreso, anemia in pregnancy is also associated with poor nutritional status during pregnancy and pregnant women in Abak Local Government Area especially the interior area may not really know the right food to eat during pregnancy so as to boast their hemoglobin level and as such bound to be anaemic.

The prevalence of anaemic in the pregnant population at booking in primary Health care center Abak is not known despite the aforementioned devastation of anaemia in pregnancy and therefore makes it very necessary for this research work to be carried out.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

  1. To determine the prevalence of anaemia among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at PHC primary health care center Abak.
  2. To know the causes of in pregnancy.
  3. To highlight the different ways of preventing this condition (anaemia) during preganacy.

To find out the effect of anaemia during preganacy to the foetus and even the baby when delivered
