Code Mixing And Code Switching In Nigerian Movies

Chapter One General Introduction

Preface

law mixing/ law switching is a sociolinguistic miracle which occurs as an outgrowth of verbal connections especially among bilinguals and multilingual. law switching is a communicative strategy employed by bilingual speakers to achieve certain communicative intent.

Code switching refers to the movement by a speaker to and forth from one verbal law to another. According to Hoffmann( 1991 110), the term “ law switching ” refers to the “ the alternate use of two or further languages within the same utterance or during the same discussion ”.

law switching is an alternation between two or further languages in a speaker’s speech. It involves the fusing of two or further kinds of language in a single conversational utterance. The word law is a neutral sociolinguistic referral of a verbal variety which may either be a language or kinds of a language/ cants, style or register. colorful scholars have come up with different delineations of the term law switching and law mixing. Ayeomoni,( 2006) notes that law- switching as “ a common term for indispensable use of two or further language, kinds of a language or indeed speech styles ”, while Maschler( 2008125) sees law mixing or a mixed law as “ using two languages similar that a third, new law emerges, in which rudiments from the two languages are incorporated into a structurally definable pattern ”.

law- mixing and law- switching are wide marvels in bilingual communities where speakers use their native lingo( L1) and their alternate language( L2) in different disciplines. still, it isn’t always the case where each distinct language is simply used in one particular sphere. In order to help bilingual kiddies not to be confused with two languages and not to be alienated in monolingual society, it’s veritably critical to make both bilinguals and monolinguals familiar with canons witching and law- mixing( Hua, 2008). It would be much better for other people to know about certain bilingual marvels and try to accept the bilingual marvels naturally, so that they could see how important social and artistic aspects affect bilinguals ’ language and learn how bilinguals and their monolingual interlocutors should lead to smooth discussion( Kim, 2006).

still, Jenifa’s Diary is a Nigerian TV comedy series, created by Funke Akindele. The series is part of the Jenifa ballot, grounded on a naive and funny character of the same name. Jenifa’s Dairy has over 11( conceivably going to 13) seasons and is presently active and ongoing( Ikeke, Nkem, 2017). This series tells a story of a native vill girl who desperately wants to get out of her subside way of life. In her despair she leaves her vill and goes to the megacity of Lagos in order to reuse her visa to travel to the United States. Although unprofitable with her visa operation she decides to stay in Lagos and live a better life. She also finds herself in University of Lagos, with the help of a lady she met, Toyo baby( Olayode Juliana) and Kiki( Lota Chukwu) who help and accommodate her( Izuzu Chidumga, 2017).
