NIGERIA IN THE COMMONWEALTH

ABSTRACT

Nigeria’s relations with the outside world began long before she was granted independence and autonomy. Her participation in a number of international organizations has, in large part, placed her in close proximity to the action in world politics. So, this study investigates Nigeria’s participation in and contributions to the Commonwealth of Nations. The theoretical underpinning of this study was established on the basis of dependence theory. In the areas of debt relief, democratic consolidation, education, sports, and culture, this study briefly analyzes the contributions of the organization to the social, political, cultural, and economic growth of Nigeria as a member State. In conclusion, it makes an effort to respond to many critics’ queries Nigeria and other developing nations have argued against the Commonwealth organization, questioning if these nations have actually benefited from it.
