Chapter One

Preface

Background Of Study

Language is a tool or a law system used for mortal communication. It’s made up of sounds or graphic symbols, which druggies or speakers have accepted to use as units of communication.

Language is a symbol system grounded on pure or arbitrary conventions infinitely extendable and adjustable according to the changing requirements and conditions of the speakers.

Robins( 1985).

According to Lyons( 1970) Languages are

The star systems of communication used by particular groups of mortal beings within the particular society( verbal community) of which they’re members.

The use of language isn’t confined to only mortal beings but for the purpose of this study, the experimenter is concentrating on language used by mortal beings. Language as a mortal property is used to perform colorful functions in a society similar as communication, instruction and socialization, which is why its study is necessary. Linguists over the times have studied languages and have actually expanded the bodies of language to colorful situations of verbal analysis or description similar as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and converse.

The graphic representation of sounds( speech sounds) on paper is called jotting. Writing is done in different ways for colorful purposes and by different people. It’s because of this that the study of stylistics becomes necessary and an important area to both linguists and critics.

According to Syal and Jindal( 2010)

“ Stylistics is that branch of linguistics which takes the language of erudite textbooks as its object of study ”.

Stylistics is the study of colorful styles used in erudite and non – erudite textbooks which distinguishes the oneness of a pen from another.

Style is a pattern of verbal features that distinguish a piece of writing from another; it also distinguishes the personality of an author from another. No wonder the French scholar Buffon said “ Style is the Man ”.

Syal and Jindal( 2010) editorialized that

Out of the numerous types of variations that do in language, it’s the variation in erudite style that’s utmost complex, and therefore offers unlimited compass for verbal analysis.( 61).

Stylistics is veritably important in Literature because each erudite textbook represents an individual ‟ s use of language which reflects his unique personality, studies and style.

The study of erudite styles shows the linguistics force of a pen. We frequently hear of the style of Armah; the style of Milton and the simplicity that’s associated with Wordsworth.

Stylistics looks at the choice of words, the judgment patterns and tropological operation of words by a pen. tropological expressions which are occasionally called “ Rhetorical Expression ” helps a pen to be pictorial in his description of events and ideas.

According to Ezugu

numbers of speech, occasionally called “ rhetorical ” numbers are expressions, expressions or words used to convey further than their ordinary nonfictional meaning. These numbers, if duly used, not only enrich but strengthen and give life to our jotting.

Ezugu( 2011)

Some of the features used in a achieving style include

– Diction, tropological operation and colorful judgment structures similar as

– Parenthetical Expressions These are words, clauses or indeed another judgment fitted at the middle or end of a judgment similar as after studies.

– emulsion judgment A emulsion judgment is one which consists of three or further simple rulings joined together by aco-ordinating confluence or semi – colon.

– Complex Sentence A complex judgment consists of two corridor. The main clause and one or further inferior clauses.

– emulsion complex judgment This consists of two or further main clauses and one or further inferior clause.

Other features of style include

– Graphology The analysis of hand jotting to interpret character and personality. Aspects of which are ” Italics, Bold judgment ” and capitalization ”.

– law Switching A system of switching from one verbal law to another.

– law – Mixing A methodical way of mixing two or further linguistics canons in an utterance or jotting.

– Transliteration This is the nonfictional restatement of the syntatical structure of a language into another language

The analysis is confined to similar stylistic bias as emulsion rulings; emulsion complex rulings, italics, law – mixing, parenthetical expression and transliteration which the experimenter encountered several times in the course of reading the novel.

Exploration Methodology

The system used in this disquisition was ferocious study of affiliated accoutrements from the library and close textual analysis of the new Half Of A unheroic Sun using quantitative analysis. Quantitative analysis entails relating counting and writing down the frequence of circumstance of each of the linked stylistic bias covered in the compass of study.

likewise out of the thirty seven chapters that make up the novel, twenty four chapters are named by arbitrary slice. All the chapters in corridor one and part three independently of the novel are named since they contain six chapters each but in part two and part four, six chapters are named from each part by simple arbitrary slice since they contain further than six chapters each.
