CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Hotels, bars, restaurants, theme parks, and a variety of other associated industries make up the hospitality industry. Globally, it is a billion-dollar sector, despite the fact that in our area of the world, we are still wrestling with how to put the industry on the appropriate pedestal so that it can fully profit like other countries. There are regions of concentration, hotels, and restaurants, just like any other company in Nigeria, which appear to be the ‘honey pot’ for practitioners in Nigeria.

The Nigerian economy has seen great ‘development’ in the hospitality business in recent years, resulting in the establishment of hotels, fast food restaurant chains, night clubs, and cruise lines. These favorable developments are significant.

The Nigerian hospitality industry is beset by a slew of issues ranging from a lack of energy and insecurity to erroneous internal perceptions, cynical global perceptions, flawed hotel classification, poor customer service, little or no standardisation in operations, an inconsistent regulatory environment, and skilled labor shortages caused by a few entrepreneurs with little understanding of the industry’s inner workings who hijack the process to perpetuate plans for profit (2015).

Indeed, the industry operates in a country where the annual growth rate is anticipated to be around 7.4%. The problems stem from the government’s ineffective top echelon all the way down to the lowest level of employees. In terms of accomplishments, the industry has arguably not made much development since its previous incarnation.

The hospitality business has generated great returns on investments all across the world. It’s a different story whether or not this has filtered down to the staff. Staff from roughly three’self-acclaimed’ international hotels went on strike in Lagos State not long ago, disrupting the hotels’ operations. This, they claimed, was due to the bad working environment and employee benefits offered by these companies, despite the fact that their bosses disagreed.

International brands have flooded the Nigerian market. However, this does not appear to be reflected in the quality of the services provided. They appear to have sunk into an ideological labyrinth by failing to recognize that the industry depends on it. Even in Japan, where plans to replace humans with robots are in the works. Experts have questioned whether robots will be as sophisticated as humans. According to the Guardian UK, others have labeled it klutzy, citing the fact that humans still beat robots in terms of agility and balance on the job. Despite the fact that hotels in Nigeria provide a variety of services to all types of consumers, they are plagued by a culture that is hostile to providing excellent customer service. Although it is a difficult moment to be a part of the industry, there is always hope at the end of the tunnel. In this context, the study uses the Dansaky Hotel to investigate the issues of the hotel business in Lagos State.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Failure occurs when a businessperson does not understand himself, his market, his industry, or what is going on in his environment. It’s understandable that everyone wants to achieve their personal, social, and economic goals, but only a small percentage of people actually do. The key to success is not wishing to be successful, but rather wishing to be successful. It is simple to wish for a million dollars in business, but success requires a variety of factors. Above all, there must be enthusiasm, passion, and a strategy to work toward it, as well as the recruitment of others who are committed to the same aims. Of course, many individuals make do with less (Campbell, 1993).

A lack of detailed expertise and knowledge of the product is another important factor of business failure. Although the inability to plan, direct, and regulate the numerous food-related functional domains is a severe management flaw. Failure to fully comprehend the nature of the goods being marketed can also be disastrous. The future restaurant owner faces two key issues that he will almost certainly avoid if he chooses to pursue another career path. The perishability of food and inventory control are two key issues he must address.

Food degrades, as most people are aware. However, they are unaware of the gravity of this situation. Spoilage starts as soon as a food item is ordered.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The research includes both broad and specialized objectives. The overall or primary goal of this research is to look into the issues of the hotel business in Lagos State, using Dansaky Hotel and Suites in Ifako Ijaye as a case study. The following are the precise goals:

I To investigate the difficulties that the hospitality industry in Lagos State is facing.

ii) To look at the issues that are causing the hospitality industry in the research area to grow slowly.

iii) To identify elements that may contribute to the expansion of the hotel business in Lagos State.

iv) Propose potential solutions for the growth of the hospitality business in Lagos State.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following are some of the questions that this research will attempt to address:

I What are the issues that the hotel industry in Lagos State is facing?

ii) What are the issues that are causing the hospitality industry in the study area to grow slowly?

iii) What elements can contribute to the expansion of the hotel business in Lagos State?

iv) What are some potential options for the growth of the hospitality business in Lagos State?

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

The research hypotheses that will be tested in this study are as follows:

I There is no discernible impact on the issues that hotels in Lagos face and their performance.

ii) There is no statistically significant link between organizational policy and performance.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The focus of this research is on the evaluation of hotels in Lagos. Because hotels serve as tourist attraction centers, this will help them grow. The following sentences will describe the overall assessment of the study’s significance. It will also contribute to the filling of a knowledge deficit in the fields of hospitality and tourism. It has become a secondary source of information for researchers, academicians, and practitioners. It also serves as a guide for policymakers in the adaptation, formulation, and implementation of true urban development strategies, efficient urban management, migration policy, and hotel establishment, among other things. Finally, it will provide information to town officials on the current and emerging socio-economic challenges in the area.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This project is aimed at small-scale hotel waiters, receptionists, and room maids in Adamawa State. However, as a case study, we will focus on Dansaky Hotel and Suites in Ifako Ijaye, Lagos State. The research will also be confined to employees working in the food and beverage, reception, and housekeeping areas.

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study was hampered by the lack of research materials available to the researcher, which constrained the scope of the investigation. Another constraint for this study was time, as the time frame allotted to it did not allow for a larger scope of coverage because the researcher had to balance other academic activities and examinations with the study. Organizational privacy also hampered this investigation because access to the chosen auditing company was limited, making it difficult to obtain all of the relevant and requested information about the operations.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

During the research, the following terms were used:

Challenges: When a person is confronted with something that requires a lot of mental or physical effort to complete correctly and thus puts their abilities to the test.

Hospitality is defined as the welcoming and entertaining of guests, visitors, or strangers in a friendly and generous manner.

Tourism is defined as leisure or business travel, as well as the theory and practice of touring, as well as the business of attracting, accommodating, and entertaining tourists, as well as the business of operating tours.
