THE EVOLUTION OF RIJAU DISTRICT

CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.0  Introduction

Rijau today is not the same as it once been. There has been a lot of development recently in the town in terms of a variety of languages, land, infrastructure, roads, hospitals, schools, etc.

Rijau was once thought to consist of a single compound that contained a variety of residential units. It was situated on a hill known as Ratayagiwa. The ‘Dukawa’ tribe is supposed to have founded the compound.

According to Adamu, it is a traditional notion in Dukawa society that the eldest man in the household is recognized as the family’s head. This demonstrates the existence of a monarch who was acknowledged. Danmasani watched as Rijauland’s political structure evolved. But a political development did occur, Muhammed Sambo’s arrival from Yautumaki, in Katsina State, as a result. Sambo was the one who got the flag from Uthman. In the region, Danfodio built a political regime. The traditional political institution in the area wasn’t seriously impacted until the British colonial period in 1914. Nonetheless, Nigeria’s acquisition of independence in 1960 ushered in a new era of political and socioeconomic change2.

Ultimately, the rapid expansion was sparked by the founding of the Rijau Magama Local Government in 1976. Under the Banagida administrations, the local government of Rijau was established in 1991. As a result, numerous new developments emerged, the majority of which involved the construction of roads, schools, health centers, and other infrastructure. 3
