Use Of School Library And Academic Performance Of Senior Secondary School In Andoni Lga Of Rivers State

Chapter One

Preface

Background Of The Study

The library has been defined as a academy’s entire stock of books and other accoutrements resource. According to Adeyemi( 2010), the library is a collection of a wide range of literacy and tutoring accoutrements that are held in one position and centrally arranged and listed to help compendiums . According toR.A. Egunjobi( 2006), a library includesnon-print accoutrements similar as flicks, slides, and videotapes as well as books and journals. These coffers can be distributed into two types material coffers similar as books, diurnals, CD Roms, and discussion objectifications, and mortal coffers similar as the librarian and supporting labor force. As a result, BusayoI.O.( 2011) considers the academy library to be the resource center of any academy. A academy library is a physical and digital literacy area in where reading, inquiry, exploration, thinking, imagination, and creativity are abecedarian to scholars’ information, knowledge trip, and particular, social, and artistic academy. This physical and digital position is known by a variety of names, including the School Media Centre, the Centre for Documentation and Information, the Library Resource Centre, and so on. still, the name” academy library” is the most extensively used and applied to the institution and its duties. It serves as both a service center and a tone- development center. It’s also the focal point for individual study in seminaries( Adeyemi, 2010). According to Sanusi( 2001), secondary seminaries can not complete their objects without the support of applicable and effective libraries.

The primary charge of these libraries is to prop scholars by furnishing studying and reading coffers in order to attain the thing of generating well- moldered luminaries in their separate fields.

According to Ogunbote and Odunewu( 2008), libraries are one of the most important educational services and that every State Ministry of Education should give finances for the establishment of academy libraries and the hiring of library sidekicks.

It goes without saying that the vacuity and use of contemporary, well- equipped academy libraries is critical to scholars’ academic performance in council. The reasons aren’t inconceivable. Anyhow of the socioeconomic or educational situations of the grown-ups in the community, a great library that’s sufficiently staffed, resourced, and funded can lead to advanced pupil performance( Ogundele & Moronfoye, 2013). In a analogous tone, Ogundele and Moronfoye( 2013) argue that academy libraries can ameliorate scholars’ tone- regard, confidence, independence, and sense of responsibility for their own literacy. The part of the academy library is critical to literacy because it provides the foundation for literacy, provides information that can ameliorate people’s lives, encourages scholars to study, learn, and achieve better results, and provides confidence to look for information on their own at colorful situations. School libraries ameliorate scholars’ understanding and performance while also supporting tutoring and literacy throughout the academy.

On the same issue of the impact of libraries on pupil performance, Todd and Kuhlthau( 2004), emphasize that academy libraries help scholars access information, stay systematized, and give support to deal with particular enterprises or issues, so making them better learners. School libraries play a vital part in closing achievement gaps and aiding at- threat scholars on their paths to success. In light of the foregoing, the purpose of this study is to assess elderly secondary scholars’ use of the academy library as well as their academic performance.

Statement Of The Problem

Despite the everlasting significance of academy libraries as respects to scholars’ academic performance, the effective and consummate places played by libraries have been impeded in utmost public secondary seminaries in Nigeria. The use ornon-use of academy libraries by scholars is a factor affecting the educational attainment of scholars. Unfortunately, utmost scholars, both at secondary and educational situations, are ignorant of the need to use libraries in order to prop their academic performance. This is, still, as a result of the fact that scholars warrant acceptable knowledge of how to detect or identify the books they need, while numerous others warrant the enthusiasm to study. This imminence of shy use of libraries has contributed to the mass failure of scholars in both internal and external examinations in the country. likewise, the negative treatment they admit by active scholars from utmost library staff who are putatively untrained and warrant experience in library attendance has also contributed to the shy library use by scholars.

Above all, the challenge of shy backing of libraries by the applicable authorities has redounded in the poor vacuity of libraries in secondary seminaries and, where available, there are no acceptable material coffers as utmost available are outdated, making them unworkable by scholars.

Hence, the below forms the background for this study as the missive aims at assessing the use of the academy library and the academic performance of scholars.

determining if the use of academy library installations by scholars has a positive impact on their academic performance.
probing the rate at which scholars use academy library installations in secondary seminaries
bandy the factors affecting the acceptable vacuity of academy libraries in secondary seminaries.
exploration thesis

A thesis refers to an experimental statement, conditional in nature, showing the relationship between two or further variables. It’s open to testing and can be accepted or rejected depending on whether it agrees or disagrees with the statistical test.

The study will test the validity of the following thesis

H01 The use of academy library installations by scholars has no positive impact on their academic performance.

H02 The rate at which scholars use academy library installations in secondary seminaries is low.

Significance Of The Study

One of the major pretensions of this exploration is to educate scholars about the significance of academy libraries in perfecting academic performance and achieving high academic success in their educational careers. This is because, if scholars generally imbibe the culture of reading and make use of the library installations in academy, their academic achievement would ameliorate and the putatively low academic norms in the academy system would be remedied.

preceptors would profit from this study as well, as they would be better apprehensive and exposed to the content of scholars’ operation and/ ornon-use of libraries as motorists of their academic performance in academy. The study and its recommendations would also give library attendants with necessary information to help them in changing some of their negative stations and unfriendly dispositions that don’t inspire scholars to come to the library to read or study.

Incipiently, this study will serve as a source of information for scholars and experimenters who may be likely to carry out studies on affiliated motifs.

Compass Of The Study

This study is limited but concentrated on determining if the use of academy library installations by scholars has a positive impact on their academic performance, probing the rate at which scholars use academy library installations in secondary seminaries and agitating the factors affecting the acceptable vacuity of academy libraries in secondary seminaries. Hence, the study is demarcated to elderly secondary seminaries in Andoni LGA, Rivers State.

Limitation Of The Study

In the course of carrying out this study, the experimenter endured some constrains which include time constrain, fiscal constrain, language walls, and station of the repliers. still the experimenter was suitable to manage these challenges just to insure the success of this study.
