Chapter One

Preface

Background of the study

One of similar artistic institutions current in Nigeria is the Igbo family system. The origin of the Igbo family system is delicate to trace in malignancy of the long times of education, and the influence of western civilization. The reason for this could be due to different traditional world views, external influences and artisticmeanings. The Igbo people live in the eastern part of Nigeria. They’re bounded in the East by the Efik and Ibibio who feel to partake some artistic parallels with the Igbo. maturity of the Igbo live in Anambra, Abia, Imo, Enugu and Ebonyi States of Nigeria. Igbo family is thus defined as the introductory primary social, religious, profitable and political concinnity of the wider society made up of the father, mama , child( ren) or ward( s). Individualism is said to have no place in Igbo family system. The reality of this is set up in the extended family system.

As an integral part of Igbo family system, the extended family members include patrilinial and matrilinial uncles, aunts, relatives, whoresons, whoreson and in- laws. In Igbo family affairs, they’ve a say-so and have always made moral, social, profitable and religious commitments to the growth of Igbo family system. They’ve craved and encouraged traditional values of their family members and their firm grip on their members has promoted the traditional Igbo pattern of life. Igbo people abide by the morals and traditions of their culture. This explains the reason why certain characteristic features can be prognosticated of the Igbo. For case, the Igbo people are hard working and believe explosively in the quality of labour. This is so because husbandry was their principal employment and everyone, indeed the children and women are engaged in it. Igbo tradition explains that the need for increased labour and agriculturally enhanced productivity explains the need for further than one woman in the traditional setting of Igbo family life. Igbo family had respect for elders because they believe that the elders are the closest link to and represent the ancestors. They believe in the improvement of life, that’s the reason why they hesitate from bloodshed. This improvement of life has added value for the future and the living dead in Igboland.

still, The arrival of colonialism and missionary conditioning in Igboland brought about western education and civilization. This meant culture and in the words of Chinua Achebe effects fall piecemeal and effects are no longer at ease. There were tremendous changes in authority and every sphere of Igbo life. still, the experimenter’s concern then’s on the goods of fustiness on Igbo family, respect for elders seems to be affected because the spirit of individualism has taken place. Fustiness has its influence on worldly heartstrings, materialism and influx. These are in hostility with Igbo artistic morals and values similar as industriousness, respect, honesty, hard work, nationalism, tolerance, verity telling and responsibility in Igboland moment. The negation of nationalistic acts has negatively affected Igbo artistic institution instanced in Igbo family life. lower decoration is placed on moral character of consorts because materialism seems to becloud their sense of neutrality to ideals and principles upon which Igbo family is erected upon. Some parents especially maters contend that it’s either the men after their heart or no marriage. The men in question may be of questionable character but due to fiscal and material delectation, they see giving their son in marriage as an appreciation to similar men who might be as old as their misters. There are many cases similar partner must have been dating their would be mama – in- laws. In order not to loose them, they shift similar relationship to their daughters in the name of marriage. similar maters use all feathers of styles similar as contending, pitfalls and petting to establish acceptance to the relationship. This is especially the case where similar maters are widows who turned business women. The patronage they admit from similar intended in- laws isn’t fluently forgotten, further, it’s made a reference point and with a pledge of entering further if marriage is established. This is observed that when similar marriage takes place in the family, the in- laws go to bed with their mama in- laws. The Igbo family in ultramodern time has witnessed conflict of societies. The acid of fustiness doesn’t only contaminate Igbo system, but appears to bring about negligence and casualness on the Igbo value system. A look at what constitutes the statement of the problem w ill shade more light on the goods of fustiness on the socio-religious conditioning of the Igbo as endured in the family.
