AN EXAMINATION OF THE CAUSES OF LOW APPLICATION OF INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS (CASE STUDY OF OSISIOMA LGA).

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Many aspects of our daily lives, as well as every aspect of human effort, have been transformed by ICT (Quarshie, 2015). As a result, incorporating technology into the classroom will improve the educational experience significantly. ICT is the use of technology to manage and process information by converting, storing, protecting, processing, transmitting, and retrieving data using electronic computer systems and software. According to Ojo (2005), understanding of the use of ICT in the classroom is growing in the developing world to the point where simply verbalizing or over verbalizing words to transmit ideas, skills, and attitudes to teach learners is futile. ICT has become an important part of teaching and learning in schools.

It allows instructors and students to collaborate.

Learn how to work in the age of information and technology. In a variety of ways, ICTs are radically altering school curricula, requiring teachers to focus on new teaching approaches rather than old ones. According to Hare (2007), effective technology integration in education is complicated because it is dependent on so many interconnected elements. As a result of the growth of ICT, teachers and students must adapt to today’s society and global economy. This necessitates changes in and around ICT in order for teachers and students to adapt to today’s society and global economy (Watson, 2001).

However, Ojo (2005) and Hare (2007) argue that, while educators appear to recognize the importance of ICT, they continue to face implementation and integration challenges.

According to Kok, while many instructors are comfortable with the rise of technology in general, many are not yet ready or capable of integrating it into their classes (2007). Information technology illiteracy is a major concern among, according to Kok (2007). That is, many instructors lacked basic computer appreciation skills, and this was cited as a barrier to using computers in classrooms for instructional purposes.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

Basic education is required for a person to be able to acquire and apply knowledge in a rapidly changing environment. Such abilities must include ICTs in the global community. Access to and use of information, according to the Economic Commission for Africa, is no longer a luxury, but rather a necessity.

growth. Unfortunately, public secondary schools in Nigeria continue to lag behind in terms of ICT adoption and usage.

Improved secondary education is critical in every country for the development of effective human capital (Evoh, 2007). The importance of ICT in public secondary schools cannot be overstated. Everyone needs ICT skills to thrive in today’s technology-driven world. Organizations recognize the importance of training and retraining their employees in order to build or improve their knowledge of computers and other ICT facilities (Adomi & Anie, 2006). This necessitates that students learn ICT skills at a young age.

This study will look into the reasons for low ICT usage in secondary schools in Osisioma, Abia state.

1.3 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The primary goal of this research is

to investigate the causes of low ICT application in secondary schools in Osisioma, Abia state.

1. To investigate the factors influencing the low use of ICT in public secondary schools in Osisioma, Abia state.

2. To assess the significance of ICT application in public secondary schools in Osisioma, Abia state.

To propose solutions to the causes of low ICT use in public secondary schools in Osisioma, Abia state.

1.4 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

This research is guided by these questions.

What factors contribute to the low use of ICT in public secondary schools in Osisioma, Abia state?

How important is the use of ICT in public secondary schools in Osisioma, Abia state?

What are the solutions to the factors that contribute to low public ICT adoption?

What are the secondary schools in Osisioma, Abia state?

1.5 THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

This study will be beneficial because it will raise awareness about the factors that contribute to the low use of information and communication technology in public secondary schools in Osisioma, Abia state. It will also be significant because it will propose solutions to the factors that contribute to the low use of ICT in these public secondary schools. This study will be added to scholarly materials, allowing other researchers to broaden the scope and approach the research from a different angle.

1.6 STUDY OBJECTIVES

This study will be limited to public secondary schools in Osisioma Local Government Area, Abia state, and will only cover a few public schools.

1.7 THE STUDY’S LIMITATIONS

The sole

Insufficient time was a limitation encountered by the researcher while carrying out this study.

1.8 TERM DEFINITION

1. ICT: Information and communication technology (ICT) is a type of electronic technology that is used for communication.
