AN EXAMINATION OF THE NEEDS AND CHALLENGES AFFECTING THE EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF GOVERNMENT CURRICULUM IN NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of The Study

As an academic subject in secondary school, government is synonymous with politics, political and civic education. Politics, as a concept, has a significant impact on the well-being of citizens and the stability of a nation. In most policies, Nigeria has a pervasive atmosphere of government inconsistency and a lack of a political culture. This climate of uncertainty has caused constant friction within the political system, resulting in political instability and preventing meaningful development. It is critical that secondary school students receive a thorough political education in order to instill in them a spirit of political consciousness that will result in a strong sense of loyalty, patriotism, and commitment to the nation’s goals.

As a result, secondary school

If our political leaders, policymakers, and educational youths can develop a curriculum that allows youth to develop a positive attitude toward and understanding of the Nigerian political system, government studies can be an effective vehicle for fostering political consciousness. The rise of politically astute youths in Nigeria would allow citizens to exercise their political rights wisely by electing leaders who are both politically and economically viable. In line with the preceding, secondary school students, as future leaders, must understand the fundamentals of our political systems in order to comprehend how these various political systems function.

As a result, every effort should be made to teach future leaders in a way that piques their interest in the study of government, which is the only way to learn.

the game’s rules. As the subject of government deals with past, present, and future sociopolitical events, the primary reason for teaching government is to contribute to an individual’s capacity for wise behavior in society. Government is taught because it teaches students how to apply their values to past sociopolitical events in order to improve current conditions.

1.2 Problem Description

If political leaders, policymakers, and educational institutions can ensure the curriculum’s successful implementation, government study in secondary schools has the potential to be an effective vehicle for promoting political awareness. Government studies can help young people develop a positive attitude and knowledge of the Nigerian political system. However, because of educator challenges such as a lack of resources, financial constraints, and a lack of time,

Curriculum implementation has proven difficult for the teaching and learning culture in many Nigerian schools due to a lack of training (Ikejari, 2013). As a result, if these issues are not addressed, the consequences for young people’s political knowledge and skills will be far-reaching (Dayor, 2011).

Other factors influencing the effective implementation of the government curriculum in Nigerian secondary schools concern students, such as their positive attitude toward the subject, which leads to a lack of interest in studying it. Similarly, Adeyo (2011) claimed that parents’ attitudes toward the subject impede effective implementation of the government curriculum in Nigerian secondary schools, because parents prefer that their children study law, economics, accounting, and medicine, among other subjects. Given the foregoing, the primary focus of this research will be

on the government curriculum’s importance in Nigerian secondary schools and the factors affecting its effective implementation.

1.3 The Study’s Objectives

The overarching goal of this research is to critically examine the need for and challenges to the effective implementation of government curriculum in Nigerian secondary schools. As a result, the research will be focused on the following specific goals:

1. Explain the significance of government curriculum in secondary schools.

2. Determine the extent to which the government curriculum is implemented effectively in secondary schools.

3. Identify the factors affecting the effective implementation of Government curriculum in secondary schools.

1.4 Research Issue

In the course of this study, the following questions will be addressed.

1. What the importance of Government curriculum in secondary schools?

2. What is the extent

In which secondary schools is the government curriculum effectively implemented?

3. What factors influence the effective implementation of the government curriculum in secondary schools?

1.5 The Study’s Importance

This study will help to reemphasize why government studies should not be abandoned, one of which is that government studies can be useful for fostering political consciousness among young people if political leaders, policymakers, and educational institutions can ensure that the curriculum is implemented effectively.

The study will also educate teachers, school administrators, the government, and all stakeholders involved in policymaking in Nigeria about the obstacles to the proper implementation of government curriculum in Nigeria.

Furthermore, it will be used as a literature review by subsequent researchers. As a result, other students who

Those who decide to conduct research in this area will be able to use this study as available literature that can be subjected to critical review. Invariably, the study’s findings add significantly to the body of academic knowledge regarding the need for and challenges affecting the effective implementation of government curriculum in Nigerian secondary schools.

1.6 The Study’s Scope

This study is designed to investigate the need for and challenges associated with the effective implementation of government curriculum in Nigerian secondary schools. However, the study will determine the importance of Government curriculum in secondary schools, as well as the extent to which Government curriculum is effectively implemented in secondary schools and the factors influencing Government curriculum implementation in secondary schools.

The research will be limited to a few secondary schools in Okpala, Imo State.

1.7. The Study’s Limitations

The researcher encountered some constraints while conducting this study, including time constraints, financial constraints, and the respondents’ attitudes.

There was also the issue of researcher bias. In this case, the researcher had some biases that may have been reflected in the way the data was collected, the type of people interviewed or sampled, and how the data gathered was subsequently interpreted. The possibility of all of this influencing the findings and conclusions cannot be overstated.

Furthermore, because the findings of this study are limited to the sample population in the study area, they may not be applicable elsewhere.

In comparison to other schools, local governments, and states in Nigerian countries.
