AN EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF ALCOHOLISM ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR STUDENTS (A CASE STUDY OF SELECTED SCHOOLS IN BAYELSA STATE)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In educational institutions, achievement is measured by a student’s academic performance, or how well they meet the institution’s expectations. According to Fried & Dunn (2012), the importance of students succeeding in school has caught the attention of parents and employers alike as workplace professional rivalry intensifies. According to Osain and Alekseevic (2016), education is not the only way to succeed in the workplace; extraordinary exertion is used in schools to distinguish, survey, measure, and advance understudies’ turn of events. Because they believe that good grades will lead to better employment opportunities and job security, parents worry about their children’s academic success. There are many different ways that school performance is evaluated (Osain & Alekseevic, 2016). The most prevalent hazardous behavior in the world is excessive alcohol consumption, which is particularly problematic for young people who consume alcohol as part of their leisure activities. Alcohol is used as a means of coping with new pressures at the beginning of university education, which coincides with maturity. It has been demonstrated that alcohol alters the physiology and neuronal structure of the brain, affecting the prefrontal cortex and other cognitively impaired regions, particularly executive processes. Optional school is a time of progress during which the understudy makes the premise of their grown-up personality and fabricates another informal community (Head servant and Correia 2009). Because alcohol is an integral part of the leisure culture of the majority of young people, alcohol consumption is extremely common during this time period, according to Piazza-Gardner (2016). As the legal drinking age is reached at the same time as secondary education begins, alcohol is readily available and easy to obtain. In addition, binge drinking, which is characterized by brief bouts of intense and compulsive drinking (Gentile Librizzi & Martinetti, 2012) and is linked to high-risk behavior (Miller et al., 2007), such as aggressive behavior, careless driving, or unprotected sexual activity. Students in secondary education may use alcohol to appear mature, cope with stress, or experience unpleasant emotions. Students may abuse or misuse alcohol as a coping mechanism. According to Fried & Dunn (2012), students who use alcohol as a coping mechanism tend to drink more and may also use defense mechanisms like denial and rationalization. Whatever the motivations behind secondary students’ alcohol use, it is a significant and widespread issue on college campuses. According to Fried & Dunn (2012), drinking alcohol can have a negative impact on some families and children by increasing the likelihood of academic failure and dropout.

1.2 EXPOSITION OF THE PROBLEM According to Devos-Comby & Lange (2008), alcohol consumption reduces students’ academic vision and may jeopardize their goal of shaping future citizens. At Nigeria, liquor utilization has spread to understudies, who might be noticed drinking in bars and eateries as well as other calm spots a couple of meters from school. The consumption of alcohol by students in secondary education is a significant issue. According to Fried & Dunn (2012), drinking alcohol has been linked to a number of negative outcomes, such as lower academic performance, accidents and injuries, hostility and violence, and unsafe sexual behavior. Episodes of heavy drinking on campus may have a greater negative impact on academic achievement and student health. Drinking can cause students to miss classes, experience blackouts, fights, and attacks, all of which can have a negative impact on their academic performance. This evaluation of the impact of alcoholism on senior students’ academic performance will attempt to provide additional insight into this matter.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The primary objective of this study is to determine how alcoholism affects senior students’ academic performance. Other goals of this study include: i. determining what causes senior secondary school students to drink alcohol; and ii. to investigate additional effects of alcohol on seniors iii. to investigate strategies for lowering secondary school students’ alcohol consumption.

1.4 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH i. What factors contribute to senior secondary school students’ alcohol consumption?

ii. What additional effects does alcohol have on seniors?

iii. What strategies can be used to reduce secondary school students’ alcohol consumption?

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This study will be very important to educators and school administrators because it will show how alcoholism affects senior secondary school students’ academic performance. It will likewise feature ways of decreasing liquor utilization among optional school understudies.

Scholars will benefit from this study because it provides existing material for subsequent research and reference.

1.5 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY This study will examine the impact of alcoholism on senior students’ academic performance. Additionally, it will focus on the causes of secondary school students’ alcohol consumption and solutions to this issue.

Participants in this study will be selected students from five different schools in the state of Bayelsa.

1.6 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY This study will only examine the impact of alcoholism on senior students’ academic performance. It will also be restricted to the factors that influence secondary school students’ alcohol consumption and methods for addressing the issue.

This study will enroll students from five specific schools in the state of Bayelsa. Because of this, additional research is required before the findings of this study can be applied elsewhere. During the course of this study, there were also issues with money.

1.7 TERMS DEFINITION Evaluation: the process of determining something’s quantity, value, or amount; assessment.
