ANALYSIS OF REPORTED CASES OF CRIME

ABSTRACT

Crime causes have become a major public concern all over the world. In comparison to developed or high-income countries, many developing countries have made very little progress in addressing this issue. There are ways to reduce crime and reduce the tool used by criminals. The goal of this work is to elucidate ways to achieve this goal in the context of Delta state’s Sapele local government area. At the 0.05 significance level, the chi-square analysis for the first variable (unemployment) revealed that unemployment is one of the major causes of crime in Sapele, Delta state. At the 0.05 significance level, the chi-square analysis for the second variable (illiteracy) revealed that illiteracy is a major cause of crime in Sapele, Delta state. The outcome of the Poverty is a major cause of crime in Sapele, Delta state, according to chi-square analysis for the third variable (poverty) at the 0.05 significance level. An analysis of the average occurrence of reported crime cases from 2008 to 2014 revealed that a total of 2145 crimes were reported during the period, yielding an average of 536.5. (year). Based on the findings, recommendations on how to reduce the phenomenon of crimes committed in Sapele, Delta State, Nigeria are preferred.
