ANALYZING THE CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN MANAGEMENT OF POLYTECHNIC EDUCATION IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF ABIA STATE POLYTECHNIC)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

A polytechnic education, which is a component of the technical education program at the tertiary level, helps students gain both fundamental scientific knowledge and practical and applied skills. This type of education was initially intended to develop a system of education based on work and training. Polytechnic institutions train the middle-level technical skills necessary to support economic growth and development. As a result, the primary goal of polytechnic education in Nigeria is to provide the much-needed manpower to hasten the socioeconomic development of the country, acting as a vehicle for both social change and economic growth.

Numerous nations, including Nigeria, view education as a tool for fostering both national development and desired social change (NPE, 2004). This could be may be to blame for the industry’s stakeholders’ growing concern over changes that are likely to have an impact on the management and administration of education as well as changes that are likely to affect the industry as a whole. Technical education is unquestionably essential for any nation’s technological advancement. A polytechnic is a higher education facility that was created with the goal of specializing in applied technology education. In the twenty-first century, polytechnic education is a career-focused applied education that ranges from trades to advanced degrees and is given in a setting where students receive hands-on training so they can put their skills to use. Polytechnics are generally thought of as technological institutions that create technological manpower for a nation’s technological advancement. The focus of polytechnic education is on personal growth.

in terms of analytical and critical thinking, teamwork, leadership, communication, practical problem-solving, and leadership. Any nation’s technological advancement depends on this kind of education (Ebele, 2014).

Regrettably, over time, the polytechnics that were founded to offer technical education in Nigeria have been ignored and pushed to the side. Nigeria is thus characterized as a technologically backward country despite having 123 polytechnics, indicating that technical education has been severely undermined. This prompts the query of whether polytechnics in Nigeria have served their purpose beyond usefulness. According to all indications, Nigeria has come to a critical juncture regarding polytechnic education, where it must be decided whether or not polytechnics are still necessary. It opposes this.

This essay explores the problems with polytechnic education in Nigeria against this backdrop.

1.2 A description of the issue

Nigerian polytechnic education is struggling as a result of numerous crises that range in size and severity. Goal achievement has been hindered by a number of complex issues, and these issues are also causing uncertainty, doubt, and anxiety. These factors suggest that the system is at a turning point. Numerous obstacles have prevented Nigeria’s polytechnic sector from fulfilling its mandate to produce the high caliber technical manpower needed for the country’s technological development and independence. Among the difficulties are underfunding, a lack of infrastructure, a lack of staff, and unnecessary prejudice against polytechnics and their products by the Nigerian government and Nigerian society.

others. Even though these difficulties may seem urgent, the fundamental problems with the way the polytechnic education system in Nigeria is conceptualized need to be addressed right away. Nigeria will therefore struggle to provide quality polytechnic education until these problems are resolved. This study therefore aims to investigate the problems with the administration of polytechnic education in Nigeria against this background.

1.3 Purpose of the investigation

This study’s primary objective is to examine current problems with polytechnic management in Nigeria. The study specifically seeks to:

1 To determine whether the primary purpose for establishing Nigeria’s polytechnic education system still stands.

2 To research the difficulties in managing polytechnic education

3 To determine the extent of discrimination of polytechnic and their

product

4 To offer potential solutions to the problems with polytechnic education in Nigeria.

1.4 Question for research

1. What are the main ideas behind the establishment of the polytechnic education system in Nigeria?

2. What are the difficulties in managing polytechnic education?

3. To what extent are polytechnics and their products discriminated against?

4. What are the chances of resolving Nigeria’s problems with polytechnic education?

1.5 Importance of the research

The study’s conclusions will be extremely important to stakeholders and polytechnic management because they will help or enable them to understand the issues affecting the system and, as a result, know how to go about seeking redress. The researcher will also offer helpful suggestions and

On the other hand, the authority will offer appropriate solutions to get rid of those problems. In order to help them achieve the goal of technical education, the study will also inform the government about the need to pay attention to polytechnic education. The study will add to the body of general knowledge and act as a resource for students and other researchers conducting additional research in related fields of study.

1.6 Study’s range of inquiry

This study’s focus is on examining polytechnic education management issues in Nigeria. The study, however, is restricted to Aba’s Abia State Polytechnic.

1.7 Study’s limitations

The following factors could limit this research’s ability to proceed.

Financial limitations

Lack of funding generally makes it more difficult for researchers to collect data effectively and find the necessary materials, literature, or information (internet, questionnaire and interview).
Time restraint: The researcher will conduct this study along with other academic work at the same time. As a result, less time will be spent on the research project.

The majority of respondents failed to collect the questionnaires, and those who do make sure to collect them take special care to fill them out and send them back, while some do not return theirs at all. Despite the researcher’s assurances that all information would be treated with the utmost secrecy and only for research purposes, some people were less accommodating and may have given unreliable information out of fear of being found out.

use in education.

1.8 Terms explained

A polytechnic is a higher education facility that emphasizes practical experience and technology-related courses.

Management is the process of organizing, motivating, leading, and controlling an organization’s human, financial, physical, and informational resources in order to efficiently and effectively achieve its objectives.
