Chapter One

Preface

Background of the study

The term hijacking can be traced back to the 17th century United Kingdom, where babies “ kiddies ” of fat families were “ napped ” while at sleep for rescue( Tzanelli, 2006; Ibrahim & Mukhtar, 2007). As similar, it’s a criminally convinced geste that isn’t entirely a new societal challenge. hijacking can be defined as the process of kidnapping an individual or group of individualities with a view to achieving a asked ideal( Ngwama, 2014). According to Fage & Alabi( 2017) it involves the operation of force to take mortal beings as hostages to achieve a particular end. likewise, it can be defined as the act of strongly seizing and detaining an individual by unwanted act on the part of the victim. Proponents have stressed that the hijacking can appear from the need to agitate for profitable commission, mortal and environmental right, political liberty, terrorist intent. In the Niger- delta region for case, hijacking was targeted at nonnatives from European, American, and Asian countries to raise mindfulness on the profitable and terrain conditions of the region( Ani & Nweke, 2014). still, hijacking may be finagled by groups agitating for political liberty similar as the FARC revolutionary group of Columbia( Rubio, 2004). hijacking can also be convinced by terroristic intent which can be seen in the kidnap of the academy girls in Chibok city on the 14th April, 2014 by members of Boko Haram. Scholars have stressed that, no matter the intentions of the kidnappers, the terror impact on their victims can not be overlooked( Ene, 2018). likewise, these hijacking used to induce mindfulness of the Nigerian government and the world to the environmental impact of oil painting disquisition on the region soon came used for fiscal exploitation( Ani & Nweke, 2014). According to a former Inspector General of Police in Nigeria, an estimated 100 million USD was paid as rescue to abductors between 2006 and 2009( Ene, 2018) showing a worrisome rise in the position of hijacking in the country. This thus highlights the position of decay present in moment’s society and the consequent impact it has on every aspect of the society particularly the girl- child.

Over the times, scholars have continued to debate on the conception of the girl child. With gender equivalency being supported by transnational and domestic bodies, the girl- child can be described as a womanish child who’s under the supervision of grown-ups who may be her relations, parents or guardians( Offorma, 2009). They’re natural womanish off springs that are between the periods of 0 and 18 times. In substance, the period that includes their immaturity “ 0- 5 ” times as well as their early( 6- 12 times) and late adolescent( 12- 18 times) phases of development independently( Ponte, 2006). They’re at this stage of development fluently impressionable by their terrain and the grown-ups around them, they thus model their station around the compliances they fantasize in their everyday life accordingly impacting and shaping their emotional and internal development( Atama, 2012; Kobani & Nkpolu, 2014). The girl- child therefore is a youthful lady who would ultimately grow into a woman and marry and as similar they’re conditioned to forfend after the youthful bones at home and take up the responsibility of preparing dishes( Onyido & Osigwe, 2017). Women are thus responsible for 50- 60 percent of the processes that are involved in the processing of food, beast husbandry, artificial processing and product. As similar, their impact on the development of any country if empowered must be taken into account. This

development still, won’t be complete if the quality of education issub-standard or affected by challenges similar as instability, failure to give architectures by government or natural disasters. Instability has been linked as a significant challenge to the development of any society as a result of its essential impact on educational sector and the society at large. As similar, its impact on the educational sector must thus be critically anatomized.

The significance of education in societal development can not be overemphasized. No country can meet its true eventuality if the educational sector isn’t developed. It’s an essential tool in icing the accession of power, prestige, greatness as well as survival of the mortal race. It’s the foundation for nation structure( Oyitso & Olumukoro, 2012).

Education can thus be defined as the process of developing an existent’s internal, social, emotional, spiritual and political intelligence through the provision of needful information and circumstances that enables this( Kobani & Nkpolu, 2014). According to Ocho & Nwangwu( 2005) education is the procedure an individual undergoes that make them applicable to the society. Another academy of study proposes that education is the process that sees an individual acquire applicable chops and capabilities that enable them appear their true capabilities and reach tone- fruition( Onyido & Osigwe, 2017). Bulut & Bars( 2013) presuppositions that it aids in the preservation, transmission and enhancing societies across societies. As the Nigerian society struggles to grasp with the realities of hijacking , the horrors of the kidnap of academy girls remain fresh in the minds of the crowd. The case of Leah Shaibu is one of the nonstop monuments of the troubles and impact of girl- child hijacking in Nigeria. This according to Bakwai et al( 2014) has seen parents preferring to have their children uninstructed than abducted or dead. This eventuality contributes to the over 6 million girls presently out of academy( Obahopo & Arenyeka, 2014). Murray- Bruce( 2013) opines that the falling situations of education can be linked to the instability in the country. According to Sanni( 2015) the north- east region has been greatly affected by self-murder bombing, hijacking and attacks by militant groups particularly the boko haram group and this is responsible for the north- east part of Nigeria recording the loftiest situations of girl child ignorance in the country. According to Buba( 2015) the children who are abducted are subordinated to emotional trauma similar as rape, child marriage, slavery and torture. The children are also used as mortal guard and self-murder bombers( Sanni, 2015) These frequent hijacking of seminaries girls has seen the attendance in seminaries across the country drop as a result of fear of similar events( Ovuorie, 2015). According to Olugbode( 2015) children now live in perpetual fear. Historically, still participation in education in the northern part of Nigeria has been lower than the southern corridor of Nigeria and this can be attributed to a number of reasons similar as religion, culture and the perception that the western told education is contrary to the Islamic beliefs( Okobiah, 2002). This has been worsened by the adding case of girl- child hijacking in the region. It can thus be derived that the attendant effect of hijacking on the education of the girlchild include low turn- eschewal as well as adding figures of illiterates thereby limiting their possible donation to societal, profitable and political growth.

Statement Of Exploration Problem

With the realities of hijacking , the horrors of the kidnap of academy girls remain fresh in the minds of the crowd. The case of Leah Shaibu is one of the nonstop monuments of the troubles and emotional impact of girl- child hijacking inNigeria.however, the harsh reality on ground remains that parent who want their girls to attend seminaries are now spooked to shoot them there for fear of hijacking . girls who are interested in academy can no longer attend for fear of been abducted also. This has affected the emotional and educational state of the girls both the one abducted and the bone that has not been abducted are now and if this trend is allowed to continue there will be low turn out of girls at academy which literally means girls won’t get access to education for fear of been abducted which in turn will have effect on the profitable and political development of the country.(T. Duyile, 2021)

In developing countries like Nigeria, there’s the problem of inadequate data.

Time factor time factor disguise another constraint since having to shuttle between jotting of the exploration and also engaging in other academic work making it uneasy for the experimenter
