Assessment Of Project Planning Practices And Its Impact On Contractors Profitability

Abstract

The increased complexity of the society and high position of competition in the construction assiduity has made it imperative for contractors, design directors and construction companies to carry out serious planning in order to insure design success and gains. This work examined design planning impact on a contractor’s profitability. The objects were to identify design planning ways and tools used by contractors in construction design delivery, determine factors affecting design planning practices of contractors, and to estimate the impact of proper design planning on contractor’s profitability. The exploration approach involved check design using structured questionnaire administered to 50 repliers in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. Spearman Ranked Correlation, Chi Square and other descriptive statistical styles were espoused for data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that Gantt map with a mean score of4.83 was the most generally used tool used by contractors in design planning, and design backing not aligning with design plans with a mean score of4.70 is the most common factor affecting design planning effectiveness. The thesis tests between position of use of design planning practices and contractors ’ profitability using Spearman Ranked Correlation test indicated significant positive relationship between effective design planning and contractors ’ profitability. The study concludes that design planning sweats influences contractor profitability in construction design delivery. The recommendations put forward were that design operation brigades should expose contractors to the applicability of design planning and its benefits. guests should duly define their brief and contractor to avoid copping accoutrements that wo n’t be used incontinently in cases of installation of lifts that bear heavy ministry and store houses.

Background of the Study

systems are used in all profitable andnon-economic fields as mean of organizing the exertion, aiming the achievement of asked objects. There’s a direct relationship between systems, systems portfolio, programs and the organizational strategy. systems, as the main way of creating and dealing with change( Cleland, Gareis, 2006), are used to apply strategies. Meskendahl( 2010) refers to systems as the central structure block used in enforcing strategies, thus business success is determined by the success of the systems. A design is an individual or cooperative enterprise, conceivably involving exploration or design that’s precisely planned, generally by a design platoon, to achieve a particular end New York Time( 2009). A design is also temporary because it has a defined morning, end time, and defined compass and coffers( Cathy, 2009). A design is unique because it isn’t a routine operation, but a specific set of operations designed to negotiate a singular thing. Grounded on these characteristics, precisely it’s imperative to plan to achieve targeted outgrowth. therefore; Project planning can be defined as a part or branch of design operation, which relates to the use of schedules to plan and latterly report progress within the design terrain.

Dubois and Gadde( 2002) described the construction assiduity as severed and McKinsey( 2017) verified that it’s still true. The lack of coupling is present both between the construction design and its subcontractors as well as between the design and the parent company and other systems. This hampers the possibility to have a successful collaboration of coffers on a portfolio position within the contractor, as coffers are in numerous cases utilised from a common resource pool( Engwall and Jerbrant 2003). The construction assiduity thus embraces a wide range of approximately integrated associations that inclusively construct, alter and repair a wide range of different structure and civil engineering systems. individualities, associations and government need to carry out some form of design planning for structure and civil engineering design before embarking on whatever exertion they’re engaged to do. According to Cinch( 2002), the top relating characteristics of a design is its novelty, it’s a step unknown fraught with threat and query. No two systems are ever exactly likewise and indeed a repeated design will differ from its precursor in one or further marketable, executive and physical aspect.

Construction is also characterized by time and cost ferocious product processes which make it prone to project pitfalls and failure, substantially in terms of time and cost. In practice, this means, that the performance of construction systems is generally low. In particular, construction systems are veritably frequently delayed and over budget. This isn’t just due to problems faced during design scheduling, but also during affiliated processes.
