1.1 Introduction
Parenting styles reside clearly in any mature man or woman who has become a parent by virtue of marriage and subsequent reproduction of young ones. It is through this process that the act of parenting becomes the babies responsibility of such persons.
The Almighty in his infinite arrangement, has it that the creation of man was necessary in order to have continuity and long lasting environment for man to operates in. he therefore, handed the responsibility of reproduction to man that he could replenish the earth with that which shall come out of man while the older ones. Vacate the earth. To this end, He handed the responsibility of training, teaching, advising and correction to each parent.
However, the parenting styles may be different from parents to parent based mostly on the exposure, especially when one looks at the scenarios based on the “olden and the modern days”. One could be dragged into the line of argument for or against the divide.
Be that as it may, adolescent delinquency affects almost all families. It is at most times very gleaming that a child that has grown to a secondary school level of education, most especially at the senior secondary 1 to SS3, seems to see him or herself as a person that has come to full grown stage in life.
Who should be independent, acting the way he or she desires, no one should advise, nor correct him/her in any act capable of defrauding him/her of a proper future. The contributing factors are enormous, which most of those factors will be looked at in the course of the study on the topic, that is, “Parenting Styles and Adolescent Delinquency in ItuLocal Government Area.
1.2 Background of the Study
Society is built through parents and children, the growth as well depends on them, and good moral. Their contribution to the social and economic development of societies is enormous by value of them being the starting point of any society. This study is focused on parental intervention and discipline and later outcome for how the children develop self-esteem, self-control and overall life functioning.
Many people relied on family tradition as a way to decide how to parent and how to discipline their children. It seems to be two prominent approach to parenting styles when it affects discipline. First is physical discipline which is termed to be the least effective discipline and the second is the parent-child relationship.
In all these, the child man still choose how to behave irrespective of what style could be used in parenting. This research is show what is more effective for positive outcomes.
1.3 Statement of the Problem
Our society having the root from the family, it therefore means the society degeneration has its trace to the individuals family. Also, if society is well developed and full of good moral; it is an indication that each family is healthy in the approach of training and otherwise.
Parents approach in child training, especially, adolescent should be through with the aim of transforming our society to a state where delinquency is curbed to the bearest minimum. Holy book has stated clearly that a child be trained in the way he should go, when he is groom, he will not depart from it.
In present day, parents due to the way they are busy do not even have chance to assess the children’s academic activities not even checking their moral activities and their relationships. They do not caution them regarding some of the materials found with them when they are not to be in possession of such. Some parents choose the risk of physical discipline which make these children more hardened, where it is made a daily approach to discipline. Parenting styles and adolescent delinquency are serious issues in our society in that what generates from a family will incidentally affect the entire society. A close relationship between parents and children is proposed. The research would have covered a whole area to confirm to true sense of the findings. It is not lacking in the ability to covers the area it has financial implication. The research work is privately done and since there is no sponsor the work cannot go beyond Itu Local Government Area. Having to produce questionnaire visit the different locations and contact links, they will all cost money. The lack of it has become a very serious hamper to a wider coverage.
The research solicits the support and sponsorship from the Universities, companies, national population commission, individuals and groups. It will give a wider coverage in the research, many people will lead and look at the solutions that will spur society to function effectively. Parents will evolve a more ideal approach to handling adolescent in order to have a more conductive society devoid of crimes, drug abuse, and many more.
In summary, so soon as the take the act of parenting styles and adolescent delinquency seriously the more everyone will adjust favorably to a more appropriate society for all. Children listening to their parents.
1.4 Objective of the Study
To assess the influence of authoritative parenting style on adolescent delinquency in Itu Local Government Area.
To assess the influence of lazier faire parenting style on adolescent delinquency.
To evaluate the influence of authoritative parenting style on the adolescent delinquency.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The results of this study will be of great benefit to the following;
Department of guidance and counseling, data provided will give the department with information on how quality parenting styles can curb the spate of adolescent delinquency in the society. The results will enable the department to improve the counseling methods. Data gathered will help the department initiate collaboration among faculty and help plan the advancement of counseling in relation to a new curriculum.
The results of the study will help our lecturers evaluate the quality of counseling that will better our society. Results would also develop the lectures teaching – learning and evaluate strategies in enhancing knowledge skills and attitude of the students.
The study will provide information towards making them responsive to their parents’ discipline in order to make the society a better place and the parents will be happy for it. Data gathered will also help the students improve both academic and moral performance. This study will improve he school in the development counseling education. The study will faster new ways of enhancing parents. Children relationship, knowledge, skills and attitude, this preparing better approach to counseling in the future. This study will also help in the advancement of leadership and teaching. Evaluation approach in society.
1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study
This study focuses in the parenting study and adolescent delinquency in the Local Government Area. The data collection will be conducted to 120 randomly selected parents and adolescents in the ratio of 60:60 respectively which will represent the population. Each of the respondent is given the same questionnaires to answer. The results of the study will be applicable only to the respondents of the study and will not be used as a measure to the parenting styles and adolescent delinquency of other parents and adolescents who are not within the chosen population.
Itu is located in the Akwa Ibom State South-South geo-political zone of Nigeria, than a landmass of approximately 606.10 square kilometers. It is bounded in the North and North. East by Odukpani in Cross River State and Arochukwu in Abia State, in the west by Ibiono Ibom and Ikono Local Government Area in the South and Southeast by Uyo and Uruan Local Government Area.
The study is also delimited to three sub-variables of parenting style, namely, authoritarian, authoritative and laissez-faire parenting styles and their influence on adolescent delinquency.
1.7 Purpose of the Study
The major purpose of this study was to assess the influence parenting styles and adolescent delinquency in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Specifically, the study sought to assess the:
Influence of authoritarian parenting style on adolescent delinquency
Influence of authoritative parenting style on adolescent delinquency
Influence of laissez-faire parenting style on adolescent delinquency
1.8 Research Hypotheses
Authoritative parenting style does not significantly influence adolescent delinquency in Itu Local Government Area
Laissez-faire parenting style does not significantly influence adolescent delinquency
Authoritarian parenting style does not significantly influence adolescent delinquency.
