EVALUATION OF THE LEVEL OF COVID-19 SAFETY COMPLIANCE IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Colleges and universities are places where students live and study in close proximity to one another. They are also buzzing social hubs where students from various departments at the university come together. The establishments of this special ecosystem have recently been impacted primarily by the rapid spread of the Covid-19 flare-up, creating uncertainty about the implications for advanced education.

Covid-19 is a virus family that causes illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome, according to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2020). (MERS).

The first case of coronavirus was reported in 1960, and a Canadian study in 2001 identified approximately 500 patients as having a Flu-like system. Polymerase chain reaction confirmed the infection of 17 to 18 cases with Coronavirus. Livestock, birds, and mammals such as bats, camels, masked palm civets, dogs, mice, and cats are among them. In 2003, various reports were published about the spread of Coronavirus in many countries, including Hong Kong, the United States of America, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, and Taiwan, and there were several cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by Coronavirus, with over 1000 patients dying as a result. Another study report from Hong Kong confirmed 50 patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome, with 30 of them confirmed as Coronavirus infected. Hubei Province, People’s Republic of China (PRC) reported a case of unidentified pneumonia in Wuhan (China) in late December 2019. were strikingly similar to those seen in viral pneumonia. The pneumonia, later known as a novel virus and officially named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization, was declared by the Centre for Disease Control expert after analysis on respiratory samples (WHO). The initial cases all had a connection to the Huanan wholesale seafood market, which also dealt in live animals. China notified the WHO of the outbreak on December 31st, 2019, and the Huanan sea food market was closed on January 1st. Different samples from the Huanan sea food market were also tested for disease identification, indicating that the virus originated there. The number of cases began to rise exponentially, with some indicating that they had no exposure to the live animal market.

Human-to-human transmission was taking place.

The global spread of pandemic Covid-19 has disrupted the world’s educational, political, social, economic, religious, and financial structures. The world’s most powerful economies, including the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and many others, are on the verge of collapse. Furthermore, stock markets around the world have been hammered, and oil prices have plummeted. In just one week, 3.3 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits, and another 6.6 million began looking for work. Furthermore, many economic and financial experts have warned about the deterioration of the global economic and financial structure.

To reduce and combat the spread of the infection in Nigeria,

The national government has mandated the use of face masks, social distancing, the use of sanitizers when washing hands and cleaning surfaces that are frequently in contact with, and these safety measures are all applicable to all individuals, including university students. In any case, prior to the resumption of tertiary institutions, the Nigerian Governments encouraged all tertiary institutions to ensure sufficient consistency compliance with Covid-19 safety measures. As a result, the extent to which tertiary institutions in Nigeria adhere to those mandatory safety measures, as well as other parts of Nigeria, has been uncertain. As a result of this uncertainty, this study was born.

1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT

A pandemic is defined as a disease outbreak that spreads across multiple countries or continents. It affects more people and claims more lives than an earthquake.

COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) after it became clear that the illness was severe and spreading rapidly across a large area.

Coronavirus is a terrifying and destructive disease that can annihilate human lives all over the world.

Since the very first outbreak of this infection in Nigeria, the Nigerian government has directed citizens to take a number of steps to limit its spread throughout the country. The government took measures to slow the spread of the pandemic, including the closure of schools at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. In order to reopen schools in Nigeria, the government announced various measures for school owners.

and tertiary institution administration should focus solely on combating the pandemic and limiting its spread among students. As a result, most tertiary schools in Nigeria are overcrowded, with thousands of students coming and going. The extent of law evasion and neglect among university students, on the other hand, is overwhelming.

According to Johnson (2020), adherence to the Covid-19 rules by tertiary students in Nigeria will be a challenge to management because many of the students are influenced by social groups, many of whom belong to notorious societies that encourage law evasion. As a result, the purpose of this research is to determine the extent to which tertiary institutions adhere to Covid-19 safety prevention measures.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The primary goal of is to

The purpose of this study is to assess the level of Covid-19 safety compliance at tertiary institutions. Other specific goals are listed below;

Examine whether students are using face masks and sanitizers properly, as well as observing social distancing.

Examine the extent to which students follow those precautions.

Determine whether or not school lecturers follow the execution and practice of these covid-19 safety prevention measures.

Examine whether school administration and law enforcement ensure and contribute to the execution and application of safety measures by students.

1.4 QUESTION FOR RESEARCH

Is there an adequate use of face masks, sanitizers, and social distancing among students?

How well do students follow those precautionary measures?

Does the school lecturers adhere to the execution and practice of these covid-19 safety prevention measures

Do the school

Management and law enforcement ensure and contribute to student safety measures execution and application?

1.5 THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

This study will be of incalculable value to the federal and state governments because it will expose the situation of compliance by tertiary institutions, as well as the gaps created by enforcement agencies, resulting in irregular adherence to covid 19 rules and restrictions. And the recommendations will have a significant impact on how the restrictions are tightened. The study will, however, assist university management boards in determining the best way to ensure student safety. This study will add to the existing literature in this field and serve as a catalyst for future research.

1.6 OVERVIEW OF THE THE STUDY

The study titled “Evaluation of the Level of Covid-19 Safety Compliance in Tertiary Institutions” only includes the University of Ilorin in Kwara State, Nigeria.
