Examining The Trenching Of Custodial Centers Inviolable As A Strategy For Curbing Prison Break In Nigeria

Chapter One

Preface

Background Of Study

Custodial centers or incarcerations in Nigeria are a major institution. Convicts locked within the captivity walls are insulated from the outside world, kept under constant scrutiny and surveillance, and forced to observe a strict law of sanctioned rules to avoid facing formal warrants and consequences( Okoli,A.C. & Lenshie,E.N. 2018). numerous mortal functions are completely elided – heterosexual exertion, fellowship, family connections, society, education, and participation in groups come seriously confined or to a advanced position entirely cut- off( Senna and Siegel, 1981 cited in Okoli,A.C & Agada,A.T. 2014). It’s an institution designed to storehouse people who have been condemned or suspected of crimes. These individualities, known as captures or convicts, are kept in a custodial centre on a short or long- term base. For certain crimes, similar as murder, malefactors may be doomed to life imprisonment( Okoli, et al 2014).

The Nigerian Custodial Service is charged with the core responsibility of promoting public protection by furnishing backing for malefactors in their reformation and recuperation under safe, secure and humane conditions, in agreement with widely accepted norms and to grease their social reintegration into society( Okoli, et al 2014). still, frequent captivity breaks in Nigerian incarcerations have continued to do. Hence, this trend poses a great exploration interest, since it’s a security trouble, not only to the captivity authorities, but to public security in general. The issue of instability in Nigerian corrective centers is a abecedarian extremity that gives both the government and the people beget for concern. According to Bagu,C., and Smith,K.( 2017), the Nigeria Prison/ Custodial Service managed roughly 240 captivity installations, including maximum security incarcerations, medium- term security incarcerations, satellite incarcerations, juvenile borstal institutions, ranch centers, open captivity camps, and womanishprisons. Some of which had, in recent times, witnessed the unofficial or illegal release of convicts from guardianship. In the last couple of times, according to Okoli,A.C. and Okpaleke,F.N.( 2014a), not lower than 30 cases of jail breaks have been recorded, instigated by both internal and external forces. While some were due to the negligence of security agents, others were due to conspiracy, security deficiency in incarcerations, shy labor force, and lack of ultramodern security widgets. In response to this imminence, the Federal Government developed a strategy which was concentrated on rendering the custodial( captivity) centers unassailable by dictating them( custodial centers)” RedZones”( Which implies shot at sight) to help annihilate the concurrent circumstance of captivity breaks in the Nation. It’s also an intriguing exercise to try, through academic exploration, to unravel the reasons for the recent torrent of jail breaks in Nigeria and to determine whether the government’s RedZone strategy is best suited to combating this scourge.

Statement Of Problem

There has been an unknown attack on Nigeria’s custodial centers which led to captivity breaks and the escape of multitudinous captures and detained law malefactors. The predictable realities behind this vexatious act include internal and external raiders, loose custodial officers, goons, gangbangers and indeed shirking of liabilities by custodial officers and shy architectures. The mischievous effect of captivity breaks and the escape of convicts to society and public security can’t be overemphasized and demands drastic strategies. According to Sakari( 2020), the act of captivity break and other forms of attack on Nigeria’s corrective centers is a trouble that, if not addressed incontinently, will generate other forms of precarious acts on Nigeria’ssociety. This disquieting and perplexing development in Nigeria and government trouble to address the issue sparked the focus of this exploration.

Ideal Of The Study

This study is aimed towards examining the trenching of custodial centers unassailable as a strategy for bridling captivity breaks in Nigeria. Specifically, it’s set to;

1. Identify the causes of captivity breaks in Nigeria.

2. Examine the extent to which the trenching of custodial centers unassailable as enforced by the Nigeria Government can reduce the number of captivity breaks in Nigeria.

3. Examine the effect of captivity breaks on society.

Exploration Questions

This exploration is guided by the following questions

1. What are the causes of captivity breaks in Nigeria?

2. To what extent can the inviolability of custodial centers reduce captivity breaks in Nigeria?

3. What’s the effect of captivity breaks on society?

Significance Of The Study

The study would greatly profit the Nigerian captivity service and, by extension, the governments at all situations, as it would reveal the effect of jail breaks on public security while pressing the ways of bridling them. The study would also be of immense benefit to scholars, experimenters and scholars who are interested in developing farther studies on the subject matter.

Compass Of The Study

The study is specifically concentrated on relating the causes of captivity breaks in Nigeria, examining the extent to which the Nigeria Government’s trenching of custodial centers unassailable can reduce the act of captivity breaks in Nigeria, and examining the effect of captivity breaks onsociety.Hence, this study is demarcated to the public custodial center in Bayelsa state.

Limitation Of The Study

The major constrain of this study is the time factor, as the experimenter had a small time frame to carry out this study. More so, fiscal constrains and the station of the repliers were also major crucial factors that limited this study.

Delineations Of Terms

National Security National security or public defence is the security and defence of a nation state, including its citizens, frugality, and institutions, which is regarded as a duty of government.

Custodial Center A place where culprits are forced to live after their freedom has beenrevoked.Reformation and recuperation of victims also takes place there.

Attack This is the act of taking aggressive action against( a place or adversary forces) with munitions or fortified force.
