INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background Of The Study

Kavangagh (1972) defines education as the facilitation of learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, morals, beliefs, habits, and personal development. It is believed that education is an effective tool for socializing both young and old people by promoting desirable sociocultural values and creating political awareness, which prepares the youth to effectively perform their functions to the nation as they grow up as adults.

According to DuBey (1972), educational institutions play an extremely important role in Nigeria. Teaching, training, storytelling, discussion, and guided study are all examples of educational techniques. It can also be defined as the act or process of transmitting or acquiring broad information, developing reasoning and judgmental abilities, and generally intellectually preparing oneself or others for mature situations.

Life plays an important role in the socialization of Nigerian students. According to Jaros (1973), schools are specifically designed to teach political ideals to tertiary education students who will become tomorrow’s leaders.

Political education can be defined as the fundamental ideas and facts required to comprehend the content of public debate. All formal and informal teaching and learning procedures aimed at developing civic skills are included in political education. However, educators have interpreted the concept of political education in a variety of ways. Political education was used synonymously with political literacy to mean the goal of political education in traditional socialization studies.

As a democratic country, full participation of students in national political life is desired, necessitating the need for political education in schools.

This is because colleges of education use a very simple approach to teaching and learning, provides more opportunities for development, initiates learning skills before work, and so on. Surprisingly, one of the most important tools for achieving these objectives is social media.

Because social simply means to make contact, social media is where people begin to communicate. Social media is one of the most significant technological breakthroughs, and it is now one of the most popular and widely used teaching and learning tools.

1.2 Declaration Of The Problem

Students’ academic outcomes are influenced by a variety of factors, but the impact of social media on student outcomes is more significant than any other factor. University students’ use of social media is undeniably an intriguing aspect of research for educators and researchers.

Various perspectives have identified four major benefits of social media use in higher education. These include improving relationships, increasing learning motivation, providing personalized course content, and developing collaborative skills. There have also been identified disadvantages that have had a negative impact on students’ academic performance and learning. Through the use of social media, students have been known to be politically brainwashed and radicalized. As a result, classroom instruction in political education is expected.

Classroom techniques that are effective and dependable are used.

1.3 The Study’s Objectives

The primary goal of this research is to investigate the effects of social media on political education among college students in Abia State. Other goals are as follows:

i. Determine whether there is a link between social media usage and academic performance among political science students.

ii. Determine the extent to which students of political education have benefited from the use of social media.

iii. To identify problems in the use of social media by political education students in colleges of education.

iv. To highlight potential solutions to problems that may arise as a result of political education students’ use of social media.

1.4 Investigation Questions

i. What is the relationship between social media use and academic performance in political science students?

ii. To what extent has the use of social media aided political education students?

iii. What are the issues with social media use among political education students in colleges of education?

iv. What kinds of solutions will be developed to address the problems encountered by political science students as a result of their use of social media?

1.5 The Study’s Importance

This study would be extremely beneficial to educators and academics because it examines the impact of social media on political education among college students. The study investigated the impact of social media effectiveness on students’ political education courses, political leanings, and voting behavior.

Specifically, political beliefs. This is because we require effective political participation and inclusion from and by students, particularly those pursuing political education.

This research will also help students understand how beneficial and harmful social media can be to them. Furthermore, it will benefit tertiary institution lecturers because they will be able to use social media effectively when lecturing students.

1.6 The Study’s Scope

This research focuses on political education students at Abia State College of Education. One of the most important aspects of the scope of this study was subjecting the sampled population to a battery of tests to determine how social media affected their learning and what lessons they learned.

1.7 Restrictions

Due to limited resources, the study did not cover the entire population of students in Abia State’s college of education, and not all of the students were receptive. Because this study excluded other tertiary institutions in the state, the findings cannot be applied to other higher institutions of learning and cannot be effectively used in other parts of the state or the country as a whole.
