Influence Of Labour Productivity On The Cost Performance Of The Traditionally Procured Projects

Abstract

Grounded on low productivity problems facing the global construction assiduity, this study estimated the influence of labour productivity on cost performance. The objects include to identify productivity affiliated factors impacting cost performance; determine the most significant productivity factor impacting cost performance, and to estimate the relationship between labour productivity and cost performance. A questionnaire check was used to evoke applicable data from stakeholders in construction and design operation( including other erected terrain professionals) in the construction assiduity in Akwa Ibom state. Eighty- two subjects were targeted and data collected was subordinated to analyses using applicable test statistics. Test statistics include probabilities, mean item score and Spearman Ranked Correlation test. The study linked productivity related problems impacting cost performance; and conclude that the productivity of workers in construction spots doesn’t correlates cost performance in these design. The recrimination is that, cost budgeting and planning for new systems completely conceded the low productivity problems and estimated frequently take way to give buffers for possible variation that may dodge.

Chapter One

Preface

Background to the Study

Construction is the world’s largest and most grueling assiduity. The assiduity is largely a dynamic sector and plays a veritably important part in the development of a country. still, construction assiduity, faces habitual problems similar as poor productivity, poor performance of time and cost etc, as reported only37.2 of systems were completed within their destined cost. This was as a result of lack of disquisition on construction labour productivity and cost performance.

Butler( 1986) in Anthil and Wood- Head( 1990) defined productivity as ‘ the rate between affair and input ’ and artificial productivity as ‘ the arithmetical rate between the work product and he total coffers used. Borcherding and Liou( 1986) defined productivity as ‘ the relationship between input and labors ’. Grounded on this view, Construction productivity can be dealt with as the measure of value of construction workshop in relation to the total cost of labour, factory and accoutrements actually used in the prosecution of the work.

Labour is one of the introductory conditions of the construction assiduity and is generally related to force. In other words, labour productivity was defined by Drewin( 1982) as the ‘ quantum of goods and services handed by a productive factor( force) in the unit of time ’. Gido and Clement( 2003) mentioned that cost performance is an effective fashion in design operation trouble expended and it’s used to measure the effectiveness of total cost to calculated cost. It’s set up that it’s important to study further details on cost performance of structure and it’s agreed by Ashworth( 1994) that ‘ cost studies of structure correspond of the operation of ways and moxie of husbandry to construction systems ’. Also, it’s to insure available coffers are used efficiently to increase the position of productivity in construction work.

In the construction assiduity, point workers, account for roughly 40 of the cost of design therefore a relationship is established between labour productivity and cost performance. In Nigeria’s construction assiduity for case, companies are presently applying colorfulnon-financial impulses schemes aimed at operative productivity, this has significantly bettered costefficiency. However, appreciated and eased, there will be an enhancement of cost performance of systems, If the conception of productivity of labour is duly understood. This will in effect, enhance workers out- put and further contribute to cost performance. It’s in the light of this, that this exploration study on the Influence of labour productivity on the cost performance has been embarked upon.

Statement of the Problem

numerous factors are responsible for the influence of labour productivity on cost performance in design. These factors when not put in place could bring about reduction in position of productivity and accordingly affect cost performance of systems. There has been lack of disquisition into labour productivity and cost performance which is presumably due to the low position of mindfulness of the graces of similar examinations. This problem has overtime denied construction workshop of its ideal cost and ifun-attended to, it might in the nearest future overshadow the important capabilities of bettered labour productivity.

Another problem that has been linked is that of inconsistency in the position of labour productivity. This has latterly affected cost of the design. It’s thus imminent for this problem to be assessed and answered so as to institutionalize a harmonious standard for construction systems.

Low position of provocation and impulses similar as weal packages, awards to stylish worker, award to longest serving staff each, serve as a reliable instrument for perfecting labour productivity. But this has not been set up in construction assiduity. Eventually, this study was embarked upon to ascertain how advanced productivity would impact cost performance. This study seeks to give results to the above linked problems.

Aim and objects of the Study

The end of this exploration is to estimate the influence of labour productivity on the cost performance of traditionally carried systems. The objects of this study are as to

• identify productivity affiliated factors impacting cost performance

• determine the most significant productivity factor impacting cost performance

• estimate the relationship between labour productivity and cost performance

Exploration Questions

The following are the exploration questions

• What productivity related factors influences cost performance?

• What’s the most significant productivity factors impacting cost performance?

• What’s the relationship between labour productivity and cost performance?

Exploration Thesis

Thesis

Null thesis( Ho) there’s no relationship between labour productivity and cost performance of a structure design

Indispensable thesis( H1) There’s a relationship between labour productivity and cost performance of a structure design

Significance of the Study

exploration work similar as this isn’t simply done to fulfil an academic class. It’s anticipated that it should be a combined trouble to broaden or add to an being knowledge on a particular subject, or more so establish a logical and important fact as a new donation to the line of profession. Productivity of labour and cost performance of construction systems is as important to construction and public profitable growth as it’s vast and complicated. It’s thus imminent that farther studies and inquiries be carried out to consolidate the formerly being knowledge of it.

Construction guests, contracting associations, specialist, advisers and suppliers, individual professional contractors, speakers and scholars in the construction and confederated field would find the study veritably useful as it’ll contribute to their own trouble to optimize their position of involvement in construction conditioning. Grounded on the results and findings of this exploration work, construction stakeholders, would be suitable to appreciate and control the parameters involved in the productivity and cost performance conception of construction systems.

Compass of the Study

The influence of labour productivity on cost performance can be studied in any construction design throughout Nigeria. still, due to the outrageous cost of covering a wider area, this study has been limited to traditionally carried systems in Uyo capital megacity of Akwa Ibom State. likewise, due to the large compass of construction design the study was further limited to erecting construction systems.

Organisation of the Work

This exploration work is divided into five( 5) chapters the first chapter contains the preface which includes background of study, statement of problem, exploration Questions, Aim and objects, thesis, significance, compass and limitation of study. Chapter two( 2) reviews the literature of affiliated workshop while chapter thee( 3) is the exploration methodology which includes Research Design, slice ways, instrument of data collection and system of Data Analysis. Chapter four( 4) is the data donation and analysis while chapter five contains the discussion, and recommendations.
