Chapter One

Preface

Background of Study

nursers play a major part in the creation and perpetration of Primary Health care(www.paho.org/English/DD/DIN/alma-atadeclaration.htm). Since nursers are the bedrock in the delivery of healthcare, they constantly need to be streamlined with acceptable knowledge so that they, in turn, spread acceptable information and chops to maters and the community as a whole. still, the health and nutritive status of children and maters are privately linked. This means that maters and their children form a natural and social unit; the health and nutrition of bone can not be disassociated from another. thus, children have the right to pierce safe and nutritional food. These factors are important for achieving full implicit growth and development. Women also have the right to acceptable food and the right to decide how to feed their children and to have correct information and conditions that will enable them carry their opinions. They also have the right to motherliness protection and nutrition( NIYCF, 2006- 2010). Breastfeeding provides the healthiest morning for the child. With the threat of mama to Child Transmission of HIV through bone feeding, health workers need guidance on how to address issues of optimal child feeding on one hand whilst minimizing the threat of MTCT and the threat of babies dying from indecorous feeding practices on the other hand( NIYCF, 2006- 2010). In the recent history with the unfolding detail about HIV/ AIDS and MTCT, the need for harmonious and clear dispatches in relation to optimal child and youthful child feeding practices has come more apparent. The National Infant Young Child Feeding( NIYCF) functional Strategy builds on the history and continuing achievements in promoting optimal child and youthful child feeding. These include exclusive bone feeding for six months and continued suckling up to 2 times with preface of applicable timely reciprocal feeding, the perpetration and monitoring of the International Code of Marketing of bone milk backups and the rights of working women to motherliness protection. In the once decade, the government has enforced programmes aimed at perfecting the weal of babies and youthful children. The government has 1 also legislated a legislation to reduce the marketing of bone- milk backups. presently, colorful community- grounded enterprise( HIV positive living support groups, Home based Care support groups, etc), don’t adequately include child feeding issues in their docket. still, recognition of these structures is cardinal for the perpetration of colorful chosen successful breastfeeding enterprise in the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative( BFHI). These include bone feeding and child survival and Baby Friendly Hospital enterprise. also, the effective referral system between health installations and community needs to be strengthened where they don’t live.

Statement of the Problem

There has not been a medium put in place to keep proper or concrete records on the conditioning as well as pointers of Exclusive Breastfeeding and maters support groups in hospitals, polyclinics and health centres in Nigeria. There has still been occasional numbers produced from special exercises or check carried out. For case,( World liaison, Nigeria, July 2000; Country Profile), in a study in the upper East region in Nigeria, revealed that among children lower than two months old, 43 percent are simply breastfed. By the fourth to the fifth month, the figure drops to 22 percent. also, on the normal, encyclopedically, only 39 per cent of babies breastfeed simply, indeed in the first four months of life( UNICEF; WABA, 2003).

The question thus is what the contemporary views of maters and aides about exclusive Breastfeeding at University of Benin Teaching Hospital( UBTH) are, however without former concrete reports or record in place.

Do the breastfeeding maters know how important the exclusive breastfeeding is and how to do it?

Do they’ve confidence and where do they turn to when they face difficulty?

Are people around them similar as fathers and grandmothers probative especially when maters have to renew employment soon after delivery?
