Security challenges and coping strategies of University libraries for effective service delivery in Enugu state

Abstract

This study was carried out on security challenges and managing strategies of university libraries for effective service delivery in Enugu state using University of Nsukka as a case study. To achieve this, seven significant exploration objects were formulated. The check design was espoused and the simple arbitrary slice ways were employed in this study. The population size comprises of library staff in University of Nsukka, Enugu State. In determining the sample size, the experimenter accessibly named 41 repliers while 38 were entered and 35 were validated. tone- constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were anatomized using frequence tables and mean scores. The result of the findings reveals that the security challenges hindering effective service delivery in university libraries in Enugu include; book theft, book mutilation, keeping overdue books, using fakei.d card to adopt books, and mis- shelving of books. The findings also revealed that the types of security outfit espoused by university libraries in Enugu for supporting service delivery comprises of close circuit TV( CCTV), AV security, surveillance Cameras, radio frequence identification( RFID) system, fear admonitions, border alarm system, door intrusion admonitions, and EM security markers. In regard to the findings, the study recommends that competent security labor force should be made available to man the entrances exit of the library. This is to help cover the precious library heritage from being stolen and defaced by tardy library druggies and staff.

Preface

Background Of The Study

Security of library coffers is veritably consummate in the provision of effective library service delivery. Where there’s instability of library collections, the coffers are exposed to troubles similar as theft, mutilation, and vandalization among others. These can have adverse negative effect on library service delivery. Ani( 2010) looks at “ security ” as the condition of being defended physically, emotionally, psychologically as well as from other damages, attacks, terror which could be considered asnon-desirable. Edem( 2010) defines security as assurance of the unborn good and freedom from trouble. Security thus refers to a process designed to cover commodity or notoriety against peril. It’s an act of precluding crime. In the case of library coffers, it preventsun-authorized junking or loss of accoutrements , generally as a result of interferers’ or stealers’ hindrance( Ajegbomogun, 2004). In reality, exploration, tutoring and literacy can not take place in a university where library collections and coffers aren’t only shy, but the limited bones are pocketed, stolen, destroyed, or mishandled by scholars, staff and other druggies.

There are exploration findings that show that libraries are being exposed to environmental disasters, careless running of collections, absence of security programmes and programs for library operation and administration, loss of library coffers to theft and other felonious behaviours. Ajegbomogun,( 2004) and Akinfolarin( 1992) inversely report that in Egypt a certain library collection had to be kept under cinch and key to help theft. also, Terfarra( 1996) cited cases of Middle- Eastern and European countries that chain- locked their collected workshop to help theft and vandalization. Yet, utmost academy authorities in Nigeria feel not to fete the trouble of security problems to the life of library collections. Although, this is no longer accessible in some Nigerian libraries as several security measures similar as operative barcode machines; close circuit TV( CCTV), 3M electronic security systems, and a workable security policy for the university libraries are put in place to check theft and vandalization. This is more so that chaining or putting the accoutrements under cinch and key may probably help stoner’s easy access to these coffers. Security is an important and complex challenge in contemporary societies. Not only do individualities bear security and safety of their lives and parcels, but also university libraries in particular, strive to give information coffers in both print andnon-print accoutrements to support the educational services of the university community and humanity at large. From proved attestations, every day there are reports of loss, theft, fraud and vandalization of library coffers by druggies, hence the need for university libraries to give, maintain and secure its collection in order to insure the vacuity, availability of its collections, as well as to give effective services to its druggies. This study, thus, probe security challenges and managing strategies of university libraries for effective service delivery in Enugu, State.

Statement Of The Problem

The significance of information coffers can not be overemphasized as druggies depend on library coffers for knowledge and new ideas to enhance intellectual development( Ajegbomogun, 2004). As a result, university libraries face varying degrees of delinquency in the use of their coffers. The extent of this security problem varies from one university library to another. Mishandling, vandalization of the installations similar as CD ROM, DVD, and glamorous tape recording can fluently crack when it’s not handled with care or falls on the ground. The CD ROM, DVD, may damage and information on it can loss. Availability of the information services can not be possible as a result of data loss by mishandling of CD ROM, DVD, glamorous tape recording among others. Theft of books, journals, CD ROM, microfilm, computers and other library collections, dwindle accoutrements in the library. These crimes, which are committed by some druggies, have deprived numerous druggies from completely achieving their information needs as it has led to loss of numerous precious accoutrements in university libraries( Ani, 2010). Hence the need for measures to be taken to cover and save them to avoid complete loss of accoutrements in university libraries. This study thus is aimed at probing security challenges and managing strategies of university libraries for effective service delivery in Enugu.

ideal Of the Study

The study aims at probing security challenges and managing strategies of university libraries for effective service delivery in Enugu. Specifically, the study seeks to

1. Identify the security challenges hindering effective service delivery in university libraries in Enugu.

2. Determine the types of security outfit espoused by university libraries in Enugu for supporting service delivery.

3. Find out the challenges associated with the perpetration of library security for effective service delivery in university libraries in Enugu.

4. Identify the strategies to enhance the perpetration of library security for effective service delivery in university libraries in Enugu.

Exploration Question

The study will be guided by the following questions;

1. What are the security challenges hindering effective service delivery in university libraries in Enugu?

2. What are the types of security outfit espoused by university libraries in Enugu for supporting service delivery?

3. What are the challenges associated with the perpetration of library security for effective service delivery in university libraries in Enugu?

4. What are the strategies to enhance the perpetration of library security for effective service delivery in university libraries in Enugu?

Significance of Study

The significance of this study is grounded on the need to ameliorate the security operation for forestallment of book theft of the library, especially as it relates to the exploration as well as to rethink the places of the university library so as to achieve the stated objects. Hence, the study becomes precious as its findings if used will help to rendering results to the problems of security and crime operation for forestallment of ceaseless book thefts, University libraries aren’t always safe and secure places and they’re facing a wide variety of security enterprises which includes the theft and mutilation of library accoutrements . The results of a number of library studies reported that utmost libraries in Enugu State are having problem with security operation for forestallment of library information coffers.

Compass Of The Study

The study aims at probing security challenges and managing strategies of university libraries for effective service delivery in Enugu. The study will further identify the security challenges hindering effective service delivery in university libraries in Enugu, determine the types of security outfit espoused by Federal University, Enugu Library for supporting service delivery, find out the challenges associated with the perpetration of library security for effective service delivery in university libraries in Enugu, and identify the strategies to enhance the perpetration of library security for effective service delivery in university libraries in Enugu. The repliers for this study will be attained from librarians in University of Nsukka, Enugu State.

Limitation Of The Study

Like in every mortal bid, the experimenter encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. inadequate finances tend to stymie the effectiveness of the experimenter in sourcing for the applicable accoutrements , literature, or information and in the process of data collection, which is why the experimenter resorted to a limited choice of sample size. More so, the experimenter contemporaneously engaged in this study with other academic work. As a result, the quantum of time spent on exploration will be reduced.
