Abstract

The ideal of this study is to examine the challenges of accession of library accoutrements and services to the druggies in law library in Ekiti State University. Survey exploration design was employed for the study and with aid of accessible slice named forty- one( 41) party who are Law library librarian, doyen faculty of law, law speakers and other library staff in Ekiti State University as the sample size for this study. The sources of data collection was both primary and secondary with the operation of questionnaires as an instrument to gather the necessary data. Handbooks, journals, papers, law reports, journals publications, were collected as secondary data, and also limitations to the study were indicated. The questionnaires were administered to the 41 party of which 35 responses were recaptured validated and this was a base by which the primary data were collected. Data was anatomized using mean and standard divagation as presented in frequentness and tables. Findings of the study problems militating against effective selection and accession of legal accoutrements of Ekiti University Faculty of Law library similar as, lack of finances, absence/ poor perpetration of collection development policy, lack of capacity structure for library staff, lack of specialized capabilities in the areas of online databases and electronic coffers, high cost of legal accoutrements and lack of bibliographic control of published legal sources. The study thus concludes that The law library should develop accessions policy, in other words collection development policy, to guide them in the selection and accession of legal accoutrements . further, so, the government and parent institutions should give enough finances to the law library to enable it accomplish the accession process effectively.

Acquisition of information coffers else known as Collection Development is a core exertion of libraries the world over. In the academic library, the accession section performs the variety of function and it’s the principal link to the other section of the library. The accession section of the academic library is one of the vital sections which deal with the collection development in a significant down that controls all the conditioning of the library. It’s appertained to as the heart bite of every library be it E- Library or the traditional library. The notion that invention in information technology(e-library) in information palace will affect traditional styles of accessions has not come to play. Libraries still acquire and maintain massive book collections while managing other information formats( Adesanya & Agyen, 2015).

Despite prognostics of evaporating print collections and the emergence of the digital format, published coffers( books, etc) still have a central part in library accession( Carr, 2011). The term accession is generally used to denote several processes of accession that concentrate on the ways of acquiring library accoutrements . Acquisition of library accoutrements operates within the constraints of certain conditions that vary from one place to other.

Prytherch( 2011) says that the process of planning a stock accession programme isn’t simply to feed for immediate requirements but to make a coherent and dependable collection over a number of times to meet the objects and the services of alibrary.Acquisition is a veritably important aspect of librarianship since the strength of a library’s collection solely depends on the information coffers acquired. The accession librarians thus have a tremendous part to play in maintaining a good collection as well as achieving organizational pretensions through accession of applicable informationresources.However, the library will have credibility and authority while the druggies will always find answers to their questions from such a library, If a library acquires good and applicable accoutrements the benefits are enormous to both the library and theusers.The major source of accession is purchase, though information coffers are also acquired through gifts and exchanges and legal deposit.

Importantly, because the legal experimenter generally need to have the most over- to- date interpretation of the law, as well as to be certain that an approved applicable case has not been overused by a advanced court, or that a status has not been amended, repealed or set up to be unconstitutional. Selection and accession of legal accoutrements or publications becomes a necessity and calculate on a variety of means for regular supplementation and up- courting.

In opting and acquiring legal accoutrements , problems like poor communication service, poor operation of the library vote, poor quality of locally published books, voiceless collection development policy etc are encountered. Both primary source accoutrements similar as Acts of congress, Books, Report of cases, Digest, volumes of bills etc and secondary sources similar as handbooks, sourcebooks, supplements, loose- splint publications, encyclopedia, etc needs to be effectively and efficiently named and acquired by good law librarians( Ali, Owoeye, & Anasi 2010).

Statement of the problem

The present profitable disturbance that’s ruining the entire world is also affecting the academic libraries in developing countries, According to Anunobi,( 2012) the crucial challenges affecting the accessions of accoutrements in academic libraries include shy backing, profitable disruptions, dearth of current books, due process, lack of current accession tools. Agyen- Gyasi etal.( 2010) further indicate that special libraries in Nigeria Universities face several challenges including adding costs of accoutrements and limited budget( that reduces the quantum of accoutrements to be acquired). As the law collection began to grow and expand, the need to house the accoutrements in a separate apartment that would be conterminous with the faculty of law came largely desirable if the law library was to justify its establishment and fulfill its major ideal of serving the academic requirements of the scholars and preceptors of the law faculty. Obviously, Law is a technical and largely specialized subject and this trait has made it the save of professional body of interpreters which makes it different from other disciplines in the social wisdom group or other subject orders, hence the need for a balanced and over- to- date law library collection. still, selection and accession of coffers into law libraries is racked with problems. thus is it against this background that this study seeks to the challenges of accession of library accoutrements and services to the druggies in law library in Ekiti State University.

To find out the types of legal accoutrements acquired and named at the faculty of law library.

To ascertain those involved in the selection and accession of legal accoutrements at the faculty of law library.

To identify the tools used in the accession of legal accoutrements at the faculty of law library.

To find out the problems encountered in selection and accession of legal accoutrements at the faculty of law library.

Significance of the study

The findings of this study are anticipated to be of benefit to operation and staff of public library of Nigeria, the Civil government, experimenters, scholars, authors, attorneys, civil retainers, publishers and scholars of library and information wisdom. The findings of this work, if espoused may be of great benefit to the operation of public library of Nigeria if the causes of the setbacks in accession and application are revealed by correcting the crimes especially in the area of legal deposit. Publishers will be pursued more roundly to misbehave. Authors will be more enlightened about the benefits of depositing their publications with the Nationallibrary.However, their workshop will be standard because it’ll have standard figures for publications and so numerous other benefits For attorneys, getting clones for substantiation in court will no longer be an issue, If they deposit their titles will be listed in the National Bibliography of Nigeria which is a good selection tool. It’s only public library that gives pukka true clones of documents and when they aren’t available it becomes a problem for the attorneys For scholars and experimenters they will always have available coffers which are readily available for their educational hobbies

Compass of the Study

The compass of the study borders on the challenges of accession of library accoutrements and services to the druggies in law library in Ekiti State University. The study find out the types of legal accoutrements acquired and named at the faculty of law library it caught on those involved in the selection and accession of legal accoutrements at the faculty of law library. It’ll identify the tools used in the accession of legal accoutrements at the faculty of law library and present the problems encountered in selection and accession of legal accoutrements at the faculty of law library. The study is still demarcated to Law Library, Law library librarian, doyen faculty of law, law speakers and other library staff in Ekiti State University.

Limitation of the study

Like in every mortal bid, the experimenters encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. The significant constraint was the skimp literature on the subject owing to the nature of the converse therefore the experimenter incurred more fiscal charges and important time was needed in sourcing for the applicable accoutrements , literature and in the process of data collection, which is why the experimenter resorted to a limited choice of sample size. also, the experimenter will contemporaneously engage in this study with other academic work. More so, the choice of the sample size was limited to Librarians and Law Library druggies in in Ekiti State University as many replier were named to answer the exploration instrument hence findings of the study can not be generalize to other product. still, despite the constraint encountered during the exploration, all factors were played down in other to give the stylish and make the exploration successful.
