STUDENTS PERCEPTION ON THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF CYBERCRIME ON NIGERIAN SOCIETY.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The world today is filled with technology and the internet, which propel our humanity into a modern civilization and propel us forward on a regular basis in the new era of globalization. Almost every profession and task nowadays requires the use of technology, particularly the internet, whether it’s a file system, e-mail, vital data recording, or even a conference. Aside from that, people’s social lives are also reliant on the internet because it is regarded as a necessary daily tool. Ilham, Hasan (2019). (2016). A lack of cyber security awareness allows an unauthorized individual to gain access to our network, potentially leading to identity theft (Arpana, & Chauhan, 2012). That is not the only thing that can happen with insufficient security; the hacker could also  Send a virus to destroy the firewall and our vital work as well. These incidents can be minor, but they can be disastrous if the hacker is able to use our name or employment to obtain the ransom and harm our family, and these actions are known as cyber crimes. According to Hasan, A. S. (2019), crime is still prevalent and will always try to hide in the face of progress. Crooks seek ways to avoid detection as methods and procedures for identifying crimes and criminals improve. Crimes are frequently committed by a perpetrator and may cause bodily harm or financial harm to a victim. With the advancement of technology, educated people or white-collar professionals can easily commit crimes by leveraging technology.

The technical complexity of information technology.

Because cybercrime is a serious issue, many concerned writers have written extensively about it, describing it as a widespread phenomenon that lurks in the shadows of any nation’s development. Similarly, cybercrime has become prevalent in Nigeria today. It has infiltrated society like a cankerworm.

To comprehend cybercrime, it is necessary to first comprehend the distinction between the terms cyber and crime. The term “cyber” refers to a concept expressed as a component of the computer and information era, whereas crime can be defined as any conduct that violates legal procedure, typically carried out by people with a criminal motivation (Bonk, C. J. et al. 2015).

There are several types of cybercrime. There are two kinds. Crimes against computer networks and equipment. Examples include malicious code, computer viruses, malware, and so on, as well as crimes enabled by computer networks or devices, the primary goal of which is independent of the computer networks or equipment. Advance fee fraud, such as Yahoo, ATM money theft, and SMS requesting bank details as BVN are just a few examples. Students have become prime targets for these criminals due to their active participation in and use of computer and internet technology. As a result, ensuring that consumers are adequately educated and protected against cybercrime is critical, particularly in a country like Malaysia, where Internet usage is rapidly increasing. College students in the United States were concerned, according to Hasan (2019).

about cybercrime, which included online scams, cyberbullying, digital piracy, and computer infections. According to Bonk, C. J. et al. (2015), most students have complained about the negative effects cybercrime has had on them and their institutions. Some of these negative effects include: child exploitation and cyberbullying, economic meltdown, victim experiences resulting in PTSD, nation defamation, and so on. Most students associate cybercrime with the previously mentioned consequences.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

The number of cybercriminals is increasing not only globally but also domestically. This increase is due not only to an increase in the number of crimes, but also to their knowledge of information technology (IT). Criminals use a variety of cyber tools, according to Arpana and Chauhan (2012).

social media platforms such as Facebook, to assault their victims. For example, Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of the popular social network Facebook, was once a regular IT student who discovered that hacking is simply another word for “easy.”

Nigerian students are committing cybercrime, with each new case being more shocking than the last. It has become a tenacious mouth sore that causes us much anguish and shame because criminally minded students in universities are stealing and committing all manner of academic and economic atrocities through the use of online communication and transactions on the internet.

Most cases involve various types of crimes, such as exam negligence, admission falsification, rape, robbery and stealing, and sexual assault.

Among these are molestation, onslaught, and cultism. Despite the anti-cybercrime campaign, an increasing number of students are becoming cybercriminals. What else is there to be done?
