The Problem Of Teaching And Learning Of Home Economics In Tertiary Institution

 

Abstract

 

The main focus of this study is to examine the problem of effective tutoring and literacy of home economics in tertiary institution using UNN in Enugu State as case study. Survey design was employed for the study with the aid of aid of convenience slice system, 147 party was named from the department of vocational education in UNN for the study. Well structure questionnaire was issued to the enrolled actors of which 141 of the instrument were recaptured and validated for the study. Data was anatomized in simple chance using frequentness and tables. Findings from the study revealed that factors similar as shy speakers, unhappy and ineffective system of tutoring lack of well equipped laboratories and poor station of study by pupil are all problems that impedes the effective tutoring and literacy of home economics in tertiary institutions. The study thus recommends that Government should equip tertiary institutions with physical installations, ultramodern outfit and laboratories in the different areas of home economics. More so preceptors in the system should be trained, and retrained to be streamlined with new chops, new methodology and technology in the Home Economics tutoring and literacy.

Background of the study

 

The study of home economics has increased overtime in Nigeria; home economics as a subject play a significant part in the life of numerous in utmost of the Nigeria societies. Home economics can be seen to contribute to life in different ways; home economics as an aspect of vocational and specialized education plays significant places in the growth and development of the public frugality through an bettered tutoring and literacy chops.

 

Home economics as an aspect of vocational education is a skill acquainted subject and requires the benefactions of both mortal and material coffers. The preface of formal education in Nigeria has incompletely neglected vocational and specialized education. Despite all sweats made to fete it, yet little or no attention was given to it. For numerous times, there was no forceful development in the area of vocational education until 1981, when the National policy on Education was published. Due to this partial neglect in our educational system, vocational and specialized education has suffered a major decline in quality, policy and directive in the country. Osuala( 1999) emphasized that the term either specialized or vocational education has no single widely accepted description but what’s common is the colorful delineations is its pretensions and objects that remain the same. Specialized education has been defined as a phase of education designed to help the people, scholars and learners to acquire specialized or manipulative chops needed in artificial trades or applied lores.

 

According to Uko- Aviomoh( 2005) stated that home economics as an entrepreneurial- grounded and skill- acquainted field of study is anticipated to equip learners with saleable chops that make for tone- reliance and paid employment. Home economics as a field of study is divided into three major groups which are Food and nutrition, Clothing and cloth and Home operation. The below citation groups of home economics can not be duly tutored without the provision of both mortal and accoutrements coffers. Indeed with the benefactions of home economics to the growth and development of the public frugality there are still some problems associated with home economics which is the problem of tutoring the subject “ home economics ”. Over the times there have been series of challenges faced by utmost preceptors in tutoring home economics in seminaries and sodalities. According to Arubayi( 2010) stated that without finances these material coffers can not be made available and this will lead to poor quality tutoring which in turns have a negative effect on learning capacities of the existent, poor provocation and frustration on the part of the scholars. It’s against the background that this study seeks to examine the problem of tutoring and learning home economics in tertiary institution.

 

Statement of the problem

 

The study the challenges of tutoring home economics in Nigeria seminaries and sodalities can into being as a result of poor performance of scholars in home economics. These challenges is set up substantially in tertiary institutions most as some of the seminaries does not have economics laboratory; this has had significance effect on the tutoring and literacy of home economics especially in the area of apparel and cloth and food operation; this aspect of home economics requires the use of accoutrements similar as sewing machine, cloth accoutrements etc. for demonstration; at times the accoutrements will be available but won’t be enough to accommodate the scholars and this becomes a problem. This and numerous further setbacks stymie the effective tutoring and literacy of home economics in tertiary institutions.

The study will be of immense benefit to the entire Uvwie original government area, the seminaries and sodalities; it’ll also help preceptors to understand what’s accessible in the tutoring and learning home economics. This study if need be, will direct the home economics preceptors ’ attention to the need for them to borrow more applicable tutoring system in order to bring about desirable experience in the scholars. Eventually the study will serve as a reference material to other pupil and scholars that wishes to carry out analogous exploration on the below content.
