CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to an ancient Greek philosopher Socrates an unexamined life is not with living. This assertion was made following the level of moral decadence in Greek period when Socrates flourished. In order to instill good moral principles in the youth. He is a proponent of self-examination and considering the consequences of one’s actions as well as the reasons for them. In philosophical ethics, the morality of an act is crucial. It’s about what’s supposed to be done but isn’t.

In our various institutions such as secondary schools, students barely have time to reflect on the consequences of their actions. It is against this background that philosophical ethics strives to investigate this because it has the essential elements of ethics. A personal or cultural value is an ethical value that might be absolute or relative. A value system is a set of values and metrics that are consistent. A principle value serves as a foundation for other values and integrity measures. Those values that are not physiologically established and are typically regarded objectives, such as a desire to avoid physical pain, seek pleasure, and so on, are considered subjective and vary between persons and cultures, and are often linked to one’s belief system. Values are broad preferences about proper courses of action or outcomes, and they represent a person’s sense of right and wrong or what “ought” to be “equal right for all.” Excellence deserves respect and awe. Attitudes and behavior are influenced by values. Thus, scholars who have written on what is meant by social studies, such as (Mansard 1996), have overemphasized the role of social studies in correcting societal vices and improving social values among the youth. The study of man in his environment is known as social studies. Through social studies, it aims to discover how man influences his surroundings and how the environment effects him. The learner is forced to confront the reality of his existence as well as the issues that arise from his interactions with the physical and social surroundings. More importantly, these issues can ruin adolescent lives by throwing them in jail, limiting their educational and occupational options, causing unexpected pregnancies, and jeopardizing their future. Furthermore, these issues are economically costly to a society. Many studies from various nations show that delinquency, such as smoking, drug and alcohol usage, and disease-causing sexual behaviors, are all significantly linked. Academic failure and school dropout are also linked to all of these issues. Adolescents who have more than one of these issues are more likely to suffer from the numerous significant and costly repercussions of vices, aggression, drug and alcohol abuse, and hazardous sexual behavior.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The topic of social vices is a cause of concern for everyone in society today, in villages, towns, and cities alike. Youth restiveness is a despicable act perpetrated by a significant portion of our youths in our various communities that can no longer be ignored. It is a combination of action conduct or act that constitutes unwholesome socially unacceptable and unworthy whole activities engaged in by the youth in any community.
