AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE EFFECTS OF STUDENTS MOBILE PHONE USAGE IN SCHOOLS ON THEIR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Secondary school students have not demonstrated strong academic proficiency in their courses. The amount of effort a student puts into his coursework frequently has a direct impact on the results he achieves. It’s possible that this is related to the fact that the student, in addition to the other things distracting them, has a mobile phone.

Academic achievement is the extent to which a student, teacher, or institution has met their educational objectives (Shreiner, 2021). Academic performance is defined as the ability to study and remember facts, as well as the ability to communicate your knowledge verbally or on paper, or it is how students deal with their studies and how they copy or complete various tasks assigned to them.

by their teachers. Academic achievement is the ultimate goal of education.

A mobile phone, also known as a mobile cellular telephone or simply a cell, is a type of electronic device that allows two-way radio communication via cellular networks of base stations known as cell sites. Mobile phones can be traced back to the late 1940s, when they were invented (1940s). The mobile phone concept arose from the development of a radio that was used in taxicabs, police cars, ambulances, and other vehicles. To communicate with one another or with a central command, these vehicles used two-way radios. This breakthrough resulted in the creation of the mobile phone. Mobile phone technology was widely available in the 1960s; however,

There was a ‘catch’ in the form of the mobile user’s requirement to remain within a specific broadcast region (Shreiner, 2021).

We are now in the third generation of mobile phones, which allows us to do a variety of things with them, such as send and receive text messages, browse the internet, and make phone calls to any location on the planet. Mobile phones have fundamentally altered the way we live our lives, and for many people, the prospect of returning to a world without voice calling, text messaging, and mobile internet is unsettling. According to Shreiner (2021), the proliferation of mobile phones has created both new opportunities and new challenges for students. A

A significant number of students, in addition to their textbooks and other necessities, bring their cellphones to school every day. The availability of mobile phones in today’s society provides students with a wide range of opportunities and challenges.

Depending on the student’s mindset and habits, the mobile phone may be a useful academic tool or a disruptive academic hindrance to the student’s education.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

In recent years, there has been a significant drop in the academic performance of students in senior secondary school external exams. These tests have recently been administered. The tendency affects not only the instructors, but also the students.

Parents of students are responsible for their children’s financial obligations. The use of mobile phones has been identified as a possible contributor to the team’s poor performance. The use of mobile phones can have a number of negative and even harmful consequences and effects on students’ academic performance. Some of these disadvantages, according to Ansari (2021), include the loss of both time and money, as well as the possibility that its vibration and usage may be harmful to one’s health.

Dishonesty has reached new heights as a result of mobile phones. Students have the option of looking up answers online, photographing their exams, or texting the answers to themselves. Despite the fact that there are limitations,

Students continue to use their cellphones during school hours. Some teachers have a zero tolerance policy for students who use their phones during a test. According to Watson (2020), a significant number of people believe that students who use a mobile phone during an exam are dishonest. As a result, those with an interest in education are concerned about the threat that students’ low academic performance poses. In fact, they are concerned about the potential consequences for our magnificent country’s future. As a result, this study will look into the effects of students’ mobile phone use in school on their academic performance.

1.3 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The overarching goal

The purpose of the study is to look into the effects of students’ mobile phone use in school on their academic achievement. The research will be guided by the following principles:

i. Discover the reasons why students use mobile phones in school.

ii. Determine the impact of students’ mobile phone usage on their academic performance.

iii. To determine the extent to which mobile phone use in schools affects students’ academic performance.

iv. To suggest ways for students to reduce their use of mobile phones.

1.4 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

The study’s goal is to provide answers to the following research questions:

i. What are the reasons why students use cell phones in school?

ii. How does students’ use of mobile phones affect their academic performance?

iii. What exactly is

how much mobile phone use in schools affects students’ academic output?

iv. What are the recommended methods for reducing student cell phone usage?

1.5 THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

Improved academic performance has a huge impact on any country’s educational system. As a result, educational administrators, students, and parents will benefit greatly from this research. The study’s findings would be useful in that they would encourage the restriction of mobile phones due to their effects on academic performance.

The study will be significant because it will inform parents about the consequences of using mobile phones during school hours, students about how mobile technology can be used for learning, and clear

the doubts of the government about the ban of mobile phones use among secondary school students.

The study will benefit the academic community because it will add to the existing literature.

THE STUDY’S SCOPE IS 1.6

The study will investigate why students use mobile phones in school. The study will also look into how students’ use of mobile phones affects their academic performance. The study will look into how students’ academic output is affected by their use of mobile phones in school. Finally, the study will suggest ways for students to reduce their use of mobile phones. As a result, the scope of this study will be limited to Bayelsa State.

1.7 STUDY LIMITATIONS

The researchers encountered minor constraints, as with any human endeavor.

carrying out the research. Inadequate funds tend to impede the researcher’s efficiency in sourcing relevant materials, literature, or information, as well as in the data collection process (internet, questionnaire, and interview), which is why the researcher chose a moderate sample size. Furthermore, the researcher will conduct this study alongside other academic work. As a result, the time spent researching will be reduced.

1.8 TERM DEFINITION

Academic achievement: performance outcomes that indicate how far a person has progressed toward specific goals that were the focus of activities in instructional settings, such as school, college, and university.

A mobile phone is a telephone that does not have wires and operates through radio waves.
