Introduction

1.1 Background of the study

Education is the process of developing human resources that takes place in a setting called a school. It is influenced by a number of factors, including educational infrastructure, basic infrastructure, and human resources. Poor learning processes are inevitable psychologically. Adedun (1980:23), for instance, claims that “the absence of these facilities cause institutional lapses militating against the country’s course teaching.”

Uyo City Polytechnic began its history in the 2003–2004 academic year with just two departments—the Department of Business Management and the Department of Accountancy from the then-school of Accountancy—with inadequate facilities. The institution is suffering from a lack of appropriate lecture halls, departmental libraries, acceptable internet connection, student housing options, and sports facilities. These significantly affect how well pupils do.

Importantly, the learning environment for students consists of a classroom, laboratories with modern equipment, and a welcoming setting characterized by social interaction. These are where the pupils undertake their academic activities, which include the growth of their cognitive and motor skills. Aside from issues brought on by a student’s failure to learn well, other issues could be linked to both internal and external factors. This study is being done to find out how badly built educational facilities affect students’ academic performance in Uyo.

1.2 Statement of the problem:

Higher education institutions are meant to be epicenters of greatness, and the campuses are places where both men and women can grow intellectually.

This implies that in order for learning to be effective, there must be sufficient infrastructural facilities, such as educational infrastructure and basic infrastructure, which may include an uninterrupted electricity supply to support students’ academic endeavors. Academic infrastructures include adequate lecture halls with seats, libraries with adequate and current books, laboratories with internet service, etc. Students who enjoy reading can take use of these resources to advance their studies. In this situation, it is important to consider how much of these infrastructures Uyo City Polytechnic has made available for improved academic pursuits. What impact does a lack of these infrastructures have on pupils’ academic performance? What other factors, including educational infrastructure, have an impact on pupils’ academic achievement besides these cultural inadequacies? The research’s foundation provides the answers to these queries.

1.3.1 Purpose Of The Study

The following are the primary goals of this study:

to investigate how poor educational infrastructure affects students’ academic performance.

to investigate additional elements that contribute to students’ poor academic performance in higher education.

to investigate the impact of a poor learning environment on academic attainment.

to determine the management of Uyo City Polytechnic’s efforts in enhancing students’ academic performance.

To advocate for actions that will increase the academic performance of students and the learning and teaching environment.

1.4 The Study’s Significance

The management of schools, the government, and students will all greatly benefit from the work that has been done.

The study will be essential to the government’s creation and execution of policies because it will provide information in this area.

To Student: It will inform pupils about their areas of strength and weakness in terms of academic achievement. The study will also be of great value to the school’s administration because it will give them the chance to evaluate the extent to which they have created an environment that fosters improved academic pursuit. It will also serve as reference material for those who will be conducting research on related topics.

1.5 Periodicity Of The Study

The relationship between educational infrastructure and students’ academic achievement is the main topic of this study. The study focuses on how the educational infrastructure at Uyo City Polytechnic in Nduetong Oku, Uyo, including lecture halls and classrooms, libraries, internet access, electricity, sports facilities, and financial resources, has affected students’ academic achievement.

1.6 Limitation

The main obstacles to this investigation are time, money, resources, and the caliber of the data gathered.

1.7.1 Term Definition

Academic Success: This is a student’s success as judged by the instructor or teacher in their academic work.

Causes: This is referred to as the outcome of a specific event, or the underlying cause.

Infrastructure: Contains the fundamental components necessary for an organization to function, including buildings, power sources, transportation, and communication.

Gaining knowledge through study is the process of learning.

Planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and inspiring the use of human resources and other resources in order to accomplish organizational goals and objectives is known as management.

A student is a person who is enrolled in college or a university.
