AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE IMPACTS OF MOTIVATION FROM PARENTS ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The best gift parents can give their children is the opportunity to further their education. The expansion of the family is the first step in the country’s development. When families are successful in instilling moral principles in their children and making the world a better place as a result, it benefits society as a whole. Human resource development is widely accepted within the development community as the starting point for any genuine kind of progress. The pursuit of a formal education demonstrates such a desire to build a healthy and robust economy in an effective and efficient manner. Our country’s educational system is steadily deteriorating. The best legacy that parents can leave their children is the opportunity to further their education. The development of the family is the first step in the development of the country. When families are successful in instilling moral principles in their children and thus making the world a better place, it benefits society as a whole. It is widely accepted within the development community that the cultivation of human resources should serve as the starting point for any genuine kind of progress. The pursuit of a formal education is evidence of such a desire to build a healthy and robust economy in an effective and efficient manner. The steady deterioration of our country’s educational system When differences in scores are tracked, it is more often than not determined that one of the primary contributing factors is the individual’s family history. As a result, it is critical to investigate the amounts of such contributions as well as their impact on children. This will enable the development of useful recommendations for parents, educators, educational planners, and the government. According to Orhungur (2022), the family’s socioeconomic background plays a significant role in determining the family’s cultural heritage. The child’s engagement with and perception of larger society are primarily influenced by her earlier experiences at home. As the child grows older and enters the spotlight, of the broader society. The environment of the family and the opportunities for socialization that it provides shape the child’s personality. Nigeria, for example, is a civilization made up of many different ethnic groups, each of which has its own distinct cultural background in terms of aspects such as family size, occupation, and, in some extreme cases, religious beliefs. Each of these factors imposes its own unique barrier, making it more difficult for children to receive an appropriate education. It is possible that the social setting or style of settlement of the family and extended family system influences a child’s academic achievement and, by extension, their educational upbringing to an equal extent. Motivating others The single most important factor is to work harder and more effectively in their chosen field. It is obvious that if certain elements are prevalent in the child’s familial history, the child will be motivated and pushed toward high academic goals. These elements are as follows: According to Denga (2021) in Eyake, praise, incentives, recommendations, and many other types of reward systems should be used as motivating elements to push pupils to achieve greater levels of success (2022). It is very possible that the type of household in which a child grows up will have a significant impact on how successful the child is in school. For example, consider a child whose parents both work.A child whose parents show a great deal of interest in what they do at school and provide them with the necessary support by providing all of the necessary books and finances has a significant advantage over a child whose parents do not provide him with these kinds of incentives and encouragements. This is because a child who does not receive such support and encouragement from his parents is less likely to succeed academically. Furthermore, the stimuli that students are exposed to in their various contexts have a significant impact on their attitudes toward learning as well as their academic outcomes. This can be considered in terms of the type of family, the house, the social orientation of the parents, educational level, and employment, among other things. Name a few of these elements. As a result, it is self-evident that the stimulation provided by the household has a direct impact on the performance of the students. The impact of a child’s family is inextricably linked to the child’s educational upbringing. Each member of the family teaches the child, and as a result, the child uses each of them as a model for his or her own behavior. The text referred to Eyake (2022). According to Adeyemo (2022), a child is harmed if his or her home does not provide him or her with the necessary equipment to fit him or her into his or her proper place in society and properly guide him or her for his or her future career. In other words, if these things are not available in the home, the child suffers. An examination of the proportion of students who drop out of secondary school in today’s society suggests that these students frequently come from broken homes, are raised in polygamous families, or have other socially connected issues. Humans have historically practiced polygamy due to agricultural society’s emphasis on large families. The larger the family, the more financial and social responsibilities the parents take on for themselves. And the majority of the time, the educational achievement of children from these families suffers a significant setback. This is due to the possibility that these parents will be unable to pay the tuition.

The costs of supporting their children’s education. Other factors, such as a parent’s relocation for work, a divorce, or even death due to an unavoidable cause, can have a negative impact on a child’s growth and development, which can have a knock-on effect on the child’s educational achievement.

Furthermore, one of the most important factors influencing a child’s educational upbringing is the socioeconomic status of the child’s parents. A child’s mental development will be significantly slowed as a result of malnutrition, as well as other negative emotional and psychological effects, if either or both of their parents do not earn a sufficient income to support the family. One or both parents work in the majority of families.

Parents may not earn any money. According to Orhunger (2022), a low-income household with many feeding difficulties is more likely to have children whose physical and mental development presents genuine challenges to the school’s effort to achieve the best possible development of the child.

It is widely acknowledged in the modern world that the primary goal of education is to improve the academic performance of pupils and students. Educational activities are responsible for ensuring that students achieve the educational goals they have set for themselves. When a child misses school on a regular basis, it is possible that the parent’s motivation for the child’s academic performance is lagging and lacking (Ugochi, 2022), and as a result, the parent suffers. must make an effort to motivate the child in order to improve and boost his or her academic weaknesses. To ensure that every child attends school, the National Policy on Education established a tuition-free, universal, and compulsory primary education system. According to Muola (2022), students who are motivated to succeed in their exams are more likely to succeed. The idea that motivation is what gets one moving and determines where one is heading was proposed by Salvin (2021), who was quoted in Ugochi (2022). It is anything that prompts, compels, or energizes a person to perform or behave in a specific manner at a given time with the goal of achieving some goal. A specific goal or objective. According to this interpretation, motivation is the force that initiates, guides, and sustains goal-oriented activity such as studying in order to achieve academic success. Motivation is critical to the academic success of students of any age because children shape their sense of self, values, and beliefs about their abilities at a young age. Furthermore, early academic motivation has a significant impact on later academic performance and career choices (Slavin, 2021). It has been demonstrated that children’s academic success in school is significantly influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations (Mangal, 2021). Students’ academic motivation can manifest itself in a variety of different motivational levels.

which could be either high, moderate, or low. Low-motivated children are more likely to be disruptive, which may lead to truancy and school dropout; high-motivated students are more hyperactive in learning and excessively worried in the learning environment. Maintain the kids’ attention on a task until they have achieved some level of success, because a modest increase in motivation results in a moderate increase in performance (Ngwoke, 2022).

The level of academic achievement attained by children is highly valued by parents, teachers, concerned Nigerians, and the government. Academic success can be defined as the extent to which a person is able to achieve the academic goals that they have set for themselves.

themselves. Academic achievement, according to the Davidson Institute (2004), is “a measure of an individual’s degree of success in the mastery of information, skills, and understanding.” Furthermore, it is the attainment of a certain level of perfection (Umeano, 2022). Academic performance refers to the degree to which students succeed in their academic work. Academic performance, according to Answer Corporation (2010), is the degree or extent to which one has acquired excellence in their academic pursuit of academic accomplishment. Academic achievement and performance are inextricably linked to the point where they cannot be separated due to the intricate web of connections that exists between the two.

It has been demonstrated.

According to a number of studies, the majority of successful, high achievers, and well-adjusted students come from families with a sustaining, wholesome relationship, as well as parental care and motivation for the child’s academic performance. All things considered, this is true for the vast majority of successful students. This study demonstrates the significance of parental motivation and how it has a direct impact on a student’s academic brilliance, performance, and accomplishment.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

In recent years, there has been a decline in the overall academic performance of secondary school students, which has caused widespread concern. Many people, including the student’s parents, teachers, and counselors, have expressed grave concern. with the student’s declining academic performance. Despite the measures put in place by the federal government to ensure that teaching and learning are carried out in an efficient manner, students’ low academic performance persists. The persistent decline in students’ motivation and participation in learning has resulted in a common concern and complaint among secondary school teachers: students’ poor academic performance and short attention spans as a result of this decline. As a result, students in secondary schools engage in problematic behaviors such as skipping classes, arriving late, bullying others, and being socially reactive (Orhungur ,2022). These disruptive behaviors can be linked to interactions.

that take place between the parents and their children in the home environment. As a result, it appears that the parent-child relationship is flawed, and that the parents don’t give a damn about the academic status and performance of their children’s schools, which has severely harmed the students’ academic performance and, in some cases, led to a loss of self-concept. The parents’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for the student’s academic performance was replaced with desire (Orhungur ,2022).

The disparity in performance between students and academic excellence is a major source of concern and dissatisfaction for both parents, school administrators, policymakers, and various governments responsible for secondary education.

level institutions.

Some students, for example, can pay their school fees on time, whereas others are frequently expelled for failing to do so. Furthermore, some students have difficulty obtaining school uniforms, whereas others do not. Experience has shown that such differences exist among students enrolled in secondary schools, and that these differences have an impact on the students’ academic performance. Similarly, some students’ parents encouraged them to do well in school by providing them with educational materials such as text books and exercise books, whereas other students’ parents did not. Furthermore, some children are well-nourished when they arrive at school, while others are not. Then one begins to think.

If one’s family history had played a role in these issues.
1.3 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVES

The study’s overarching goal is to investigate the effect of parental motivation on secondary school students’ academic achievement. The research will be guided by the following criteria:

i. To investigate the impact of motivation on secondary school students’ academic achievement.

ii. To determine whether parental motivation influences students’ academic achievement.

iii. Determine whether parents’ educational backgrounds influence students’ academic performance.

1.4 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

The following research questions were posed in order to achieve the derived objectives:

i. What effect does motivation have on secondary school students’ academic achievement?

ii. Will parental motivation have an impact on students’ academic achievement?

iii. Will students’ academic performance be influenced by their parents’ educational background?

1.5 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE

The importance of this research in the educational system cannot be overstated. If the study’s findings are properly applied. It will benefit parents, students, teachers, educators, the government, business owners, counselors, and others.

It will assist in understanding the need for qualitative education, as well as what, when, and how to provide supportive measures and motivation that will boost students’ morale and motivation toward learning and aid in the construction of an evil-free and economically balanced society/nation.

When completed, this type of work may assist parents in becoming aware of the impact they have on their children.

children, and how this affects the child’s academic performance positively or negatively.

The study will be important to the academic community because it will add to the existing literature.

1.6 STUDY OBJECTIVES
