AN INVESTIGATION OF FAVOURITE PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPIL ACTIVITIES.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of The Study

Interest is essential as a motivator for learning and living at all stages of life. For children, it may mean the difference between learning and not learning, partly because their interests change. As a result, at any stage of development, a child can develop an interest in a specific activity. He commits time, energy, and intellectual resources to this project. Depending on his perseverance, he may develop specific skills or proficiency in that activity. After four or five years, interest may shift to another activity, and the cycle of skill and expertise development will begin again.

Children who have a diverse set of interests at any given stage of development are more likely to acquire a diverse set of knowledge, skills, and competencies than those who do not.

who have few or no resources. As a result, interests pervade all aspects of life and learning. Because children are more spontaneous than adults, an interest generates a drive and a stimulant that propels performance. Most elementary school-age children are learning-hungry (Alkhfak, Eman 2010 cited in Ibrahim Al-Shara 2015), emphasizing the importance of interest development at this age, because they learn quickly, enthusiastically, and with little difficulty whatever they study. In other words, their learning capacity is at an all-time high.

In the United States, studies of children’s favorite activities, such as reading or media interests, were conducted. Many studies of general interests found that watching television was the most popular. Sports have also been found in other studies.

Children’s favorite pastimes include various types of games.

When Alhela, Mohammed, Aisha, and Ghoneim (2002), as cited in Suheir Hassan K. (2016), asked more than 200 fourth graders what they would do if they could do anything they wanted, play activities ranked just slightly higher than schoolwork, followed by reading, assisting with household chores, and working for money. Eman Alkhfak (2010), cited in Suheir Hassan K. (2016), found that “academics” was the most frequently named favorite activity by his subjects, followed by home duties, sports, and games. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate An investigation of favorite primary school pupil activities.

1.2 Problem description

Children’s activities have enormous teaching and learning potential.

They, like other activities, serve the simple purpose of keeping children occupied. They are, however, demanding, bringing out the best in children. There is no need for urging, reminding, or outside stimulus because the children choose to do these things. As a result, one of the most effective learning strategies is promoted: self-learning.

Self-learning increases the learner’s knowledge and creativity. It allows the learner to pursue his or her own personal potentials at his or her own pace and on his or her own timetable, using his or her own tools. Self-motivation is encouraged, which allows the learner to benefit from self-interaction. He chooses the backgrounds, abilities, and procedures, or some combination of these, to investigate. The child learner gradually prepares himself for school by engaging in this practice.

Be your own teacher. When a learner develops this ability early in his career, he is more likely to have a relatively pleasant passage through youth and adult learning tasks, as well as to be able to rely on himself to structure and prepare learning experiences that are appropriate for his needs. As a result, self-education is a skill and experience that can be applied throughout one’s life.

In addition to the wealth and self-education gained from self-imposed practices, the learner gains proficiency in specific abilities. Academic activities can include the development of problem-solving, reasoning, and discussion skills. Coordination, accuracy, distance estimation, timing, and other skills could be developed for the child participating in physical activities. When such activities are carried out in the presence of others

Children gain additional benefits because healthy social relationships necessitate the acquisition and application of virtues such as sympathy, tolerance, accommodation, forgiveness, compromise, empathy, and the like.

Based on all of these considerations, it is preferable to encourage children to participate in activities that they find interesting. The discoveries they make about their world, the conclusions they reach about their own abilities and potentials, both by themselves and in relation to others, are far too valuable to be overlooked, and far too personal to be obtained in any other way. As a result, the purpose of this investigation is to identify and categorize those activities that elementary school children find interesting enough to participate in voluntarily.

1.3 The study’s purpose

The primary goal of this research is to

Conduct an investigation into favorite primary school student activities. It specifically seeks:

1. To investigate primary school children’s favorite activities.

2. Determine whether younger children’s favorite activities differ from those of older children.

3. Determine whether boys’ and girls’ preferred activities differ.

4. To see if urban children’s favorite activities differ from those of rural children.

1.4 Research Issue

The following research questions guide the investigation.

1. What are the favorite activities of Anambra State elementary school students?

2. Do younger children’s favorite activities differ from those of older children?’

3. Are boys’ and girls’ favorite activities different?

4. Participate in urban children’s favorite activities.

how do they differ from those of rural children?

1.5 Importance of the research

The study will be useful to teachers, school administrators, and curriculum planners. The study will enlighten teachers on the importance of using the play method of teaching, exposing their students to different activities, and allowing them to explore them as this encourages self-learning and helps them to realize their full potential. The study will raise awareness among school owners about the importance of installing modern play facilities in their schools, as teachers cannot introduce fun activities in the absence of adequate infrastructure. The study will highlight the importance of including fun activities in the elementary/primary curriculum for curriculum designers and educational stakeholders, as this will always encourage teachers who are bored.

the implementer to complete the task. Finally, this research will benefit education students by adding to the body of knowledge, serving as a reference material for other researchers, and providing opportunities for further research in elementary studies.

1.6 The Study’s Scope

The scope of this study is limited to an investigation of favorite primary school student activities. It will investigate primary school children’s favorite activities. It will look into whether younger children’s favorite activities differ from those of older children. It will determine whether boys’ and girls’ preferred activities differ. It will investigate whether urban children’s preferred activities differ from those of rural children. The study, however, is limited to a few schools in Owerri Municipal.

The state of Imo.

1.7 Study Restrictions

The study was hampered by the following factors.

Financial constraint- Inadequate funding tends to impede the researcher’s efficiency in locating relevant materials, literature, or information, as well as in the data collection process (internet, questionnaire and interview).
Time constraint- The researcher will conduct this study alongside other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.

Despite the above-mentioned limitations, the researcher worked tirelessly to ensure that the study’s goal was met.
