Introduction

1.1 The study’s context

According to Encyclopedia (2008), home economics is a profession and subject of study that deals with the administration of the home and community as well as the practice of economics. It is a branch of study that draws from a variety of disciplines in order to achieve and uphold the wellbeing of the family.

It is taught in secondary schools and adult education facilities, and its students include both men and women, claims Uzoezie (1990).

(2010), according to WikiPedia. Consumer education is one of the subjects covered in the official study of home economics. Interior design, home furnishings, handicrafts, apparel and textiles, nutrition, food preservation, hygiene, child development, financial management, and family relationships are all included in institution management. But this subject, like food production, might also be cowered with sex education and drug awareness. However, the Anyakoha and Eluwa (1991) home economics program is separated into four categories.

i. Textiles and apparel.

ii. Home administration

iii. Nutrition and Food

iv. Care and development of children.

Each element is covered in tertiary institution courses, however the fundamental concern for home economics is still relevant to all four programs. Home economics helps students get ready for real-life obligations at home as well as careers in the home or in the workforce. Home Economics is a branch of human science that aims to help people, families, and communities live sustainably.

Home Economics has traditionally been thought of in terms of the home and household, but in the twenty-first century this has expanded to include the larger living environment as we have a better understanding of how individual and family choices affect all levels, from the household to the local and global community (Wikipedia 2010).

Home economists are interested in advancing and safeguarding the welfare of people, their families, and communities. They also assist in the development of skills necessary for lifelong learning as well as paid, unpaid, and volunteer labor.

According to research, historically, more women than men enroll in home economics courses, and enrollment of male students in the department has been poor. This is due, among other things, to the fact that home economics classes in the 19th century were designed to prepare women for their domestic responsibilities. To further understand the low enrollment of male students in home economics courses at postsecondary institutions, the researcher will choose Enugu State College of Education Technical Enugu as a case study.

Situation Of The Problem

An interdisciplinary course, home economics includes the following academic disciplines: textiles and clothing, shelter and housing management and hospitality, human development and family studies, hotel management and hospitality, design and technology education, and community services, among others. Haro (1992).

Despite the value of the multidisciplinary knowledge offered by home economics, which is crucial given the phenomena, difficulties, and concerns of modern life. The issue of the low enrollment of male students in the department of home economics at tertiary institutions necessitates an inquiry research.

1.3 Study’s Objective

The study’s goal is to evaluate the low enrollment of male students in home economics courses at postsecondary institutions, with a focus on ESCET, Enugu State College of Education (Technical).

The results are:

i. That male enrollment in the field has been low, particularly at the Enugu State College of Education (Technical) ESCET, Enugu.

ii. The male student believes that one of the main issues is the profession compared to the female course.

iii. A very persuasive explanation is required for the potential methods of the male student’s multiple enrollment in the profession.

1.4 Hypotheses For Research

The researcher developed the following research hypotheses in order to successfully complete the study:

H0: Enrolment of male students in the profession, particularly at the Enugu State College of Education (Technical) ESCET, Enugu, has not been subpar.

H1: Enrolment of male students in the profession has been low, particularly at the Enugu State College of Education (Technical) ESCET in Enugu.

H02: Male students do not view the profession compared to women’s courses as a serious issue.

H2: Male students view the occupation being compared to a female course as one of the main issues.

1.5 Relationship To Other Studies

This study will be helpful to other Nigerian colleges that offer home economics, in addition to the management of Enugu State College of Education (Technical) Enugu.

Furthermore, the issue of the low enrollment of male students in home economics will be crucial for future scholars and those interested in the field.

Since it may be necessary for the granting of a national College of Education in Home Economics, this empirical study is promised to the researchers. It will also introduce THE NEED FOR THE study and society at large.

1.6 The study’s scope and limitations

The research effort employs ESCET, Enugu State as a case study and focuses in particular on the low enrollment of male students in Home Economics in tertiary institutions.The study’s scope was constrained due to a constraint the researcher encountered;

a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The researcher’s access to suitable research material limits the investigation.

b) TIME: Because the researcher must juggle the study with other academic obligations and exams, the time allotted for the investigation does not improve wider coverage.

c) Organizational privacy: It is challenging to obtain all the necessary and relevant information regarding the activities due to limited access to the chosen auditing firm.

1.7 Term Definition

CAUSES: An explanation for a state or action: In a sentence, a motivation is something that causes an effect or a result.

Number of students who are officially registered and/or attending classes at an institution; see List of largest universities by enrollment for more information. Concurrent enrollment is the practice of enrolling high school students in a university or college, typically to earn college credit.

ECONOMIC: According to Wikipedia, economics is a social science that focuses primarily on describing and analyzing how goods and services are produced, distributed, and consumed. Economics focuses on how economies function as well as the activities and interactions of economic players.

TERTIARY: Post-secondary education, also known as third stage, third level, or tertiary education, is the level of education that comes after high school.

1.8 How The Study Was Organized

For ease of understanding, this research paper is divided into five chapters, as follows:

The first chapter is devoted to the introduction, which includes an overview of the study, its historical context, statement of the problem, study objectives, research hypotheses, significance of the study, its scope and limitations, definition of terms, and its historical context. The review of related literature is highlighted in Chapter 2 in order to provide the theoretical foundation for the study. The third chapter covers the study’s methodology and research strategy. The gathering, processing, and presentation of data are the main topics of Chapter 4. The study’s summary, conclusion, and suggestions are presented in Chapter 5.
