Introduction

1.1 The Study’s Background

Behavior that is deviant and delinquent is a major issue in our culture today. The earth has degraded, and children no longer obey their parents, an Egyptian priest once carried on a stone. (1995, Johnson). The rise in aberrant and criminal behavior among pupils at Emotan Girls Grammar School has caught the attention of numerous people. We hear a twist of deviant and delinquent factors being linked to the current Emotan girl’s grammar school when we read the Nigerian daily newspapers, listen to radio, and watch television. The days when students took pride in attending school, worked hard in class, and had aspirations for the future while remaining quiet and young-looking for their years are long gone. Today, such is not the case.

People who are active in raising children have observed a wide range of behavior, from basic vices like lying about one’s age to drinking alcohol that would make them misbehave. At Emotan Girls Grammar School, incidents of antisocial behavior are becoming more frequent. Examples include students assaulting teachers, setting fire to and destroying school property, and attempting to rape their female classmates. Parents, teachers, and social workers who are in charge of raising these kids are becoming increasingly concerned about the rise in these deviant and criminal acts. This suggests that the root of deviant and delinquent behavior in Emotan Girls Grammar School must be identified, and appropriate measures must be made to avoid it.

Statement Of The Problem

The investigator’s experience as a teacher served as inspiration for the choice to conduct a study on the factors contributing to deviant and delinquent behavior. There are frequently incidents of pupils stealing, skipping class, consuming India hemp, etc. at school. One cannot overstate the importance of students in the growth of the country, but what chance does the country have when the students who are meant to create the country engage in numerous vices and crimes? There is no question that these students’ actions have a negative impact on them and the other students in the room. Therefore, the issues addressed by this work are as follows:

1. How do social and economic factors affect pupils’ deviant and criminal behavior?

2. Do pupils who watch television behave differently?

3. Is there a connection between deviance and delinquency and peer pressure?

4. What impact does parental behavior have on students’ aberrant and criminal behavior?

5. Does emotional neglect contribute to student deviance?

1.3 Objective Of The Study

Since good deeds start at home, the main goal of this study is to determine the root causes of deviant and delinquent behavior in Emotan Girls Grammar School. Additionally, the investigation will make recommendations for how to rid the grammar school for Emotan girls of deviant and criminal behavior.

1.4 The Study’s Significance

The findings of this study are hoped to be helpful to parents, teachers, psychologists, and social workers. The research findings will also serve as a useful resource for writing on what leads to deviant and criminal behavior.

The study’s findings are hoped to serve as a foundation for pertinent preventive measures in deviant and delinquent behavior.

1.5 Questions For The Study

1. Can deviant and delinquent behavior be traced back to teenage behavior?

2. Does watching television contribute to aberrant and juvenile behavior?

3. Is a child’s dysfunctional upbringing the root of their deviant and criminal behavior?

4. Do aberrant and criminal behavior result from ineffective school management?

5. Does absenteeism result in criminal and deviant behavior?

6. Does stealing lead to criminal and deviant behavior?

1.6 Aim Of The Study

The Emotan Girls Grammar School and the Emotan Girls Grammar School are the focus of this investigation.

Definition of terms, section 1.7

Deviants: This term refers to actions that are contrary to expectations or to the lack of discipline. This indicates that any behavior must be acknowledged as being against social norms.

Delinquency is described or referred to as the behavior that results from personal and social constraints failing to create behaviors that are consistent with the norms of the society system, to which legal penalties are linked. The social norms and rules have not been ingested by delinquent people.

Broken Home: This is when parents have separated, either through divorce or parental abandonment.

Emotional deprivation is when a person is denied the chance to feel a sufficient level of love.

Adolescence: Adolescence is a stage in a kid’s development when there is an early acceleration of growth as the child moves closer to adulthood. (1985, Akinbonye). In Nigeria, adolescents are simply those who fall between the ages of 12 and 21.

Unfriendly Family Relationship: This is also referred to as the kind of relationship that causes children to receive less attention. Children may get hostile toward them and develop a fear of crates as a result. This kind of relationship may exist, for instance, between stepparents and their stepchildren. Some stepparents view the stepchildren as the offspring of negligent parents, who leave the house and participate in aberrant behavior by joining various deviant subcultures.
