ANALYSIS OF REPORTED CASES OF CRIME (1996 TO 2003)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Crime is defined as any act that is against the law and can result in punishment. Nigeria is a country where everything works in reverse. Depending on the country, some crimes are punishable by law. To be more specific, in our state (Enugu), some offenses such as cheating, election rigging, stealing, advance free frauds (419), and many others are on the rise. Any citizen who commits a crime may face punishment depending on how the state punishes their offenders due to negligence. The rate of crime in Nigeria is so high that it will be difficult to identify the true criminals. However, the term crime encompasses acts that are against the law and the principle. National Justice, because society has reduced crime to only armed robbery.

  1. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

It is a recorded case of a crime committed in the country. This is a research project that aims to present an analysis of reported crime cases from 1996 to 2003.

  1. AIM AND OBJECTIVES

To investigate whether crime in Enugu State exhibits or displays a trend.
To compare the rate of crime between two types of crime.
To determine whether the type of crime is independent or dependent on gender.
To determine whether the seasons influenced the number of crimes committed.

FELONY- A serious violation of the law, which may result in a death sentence. As an example, consider murder.

MISDEAMOUR – An unlawful act that is not serious in nature and is punishable for more than six months (that is the penalty for a committee). As an example, consider arson.

SIMPLE OFFENSE – This is not a felony or a misdemeanor, and it is punishable by imprisonment for no more than six months; examples include forgery and unlawful possession.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research is critical for the general public, the government, the Nigeria police, and other crime-fighting agencies.

  1. THE SCOPE AND COVERAGE OF THE STUDY

The goal of this study, as well as the availability of data, is to focus on the Enugu State Central Police Station as a unit study. It was chosen as a result of my interest in studying crime in Enugu urban areas. The study examines reported crime cases from January 1996 to December 2003 over an eight-year period.

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The study was formally designed to cover more years, but it is limited to 8 years due to financial and time constraints.

A CASE is a series of events that necessitate action.

OFFENSE – any illegal act.

CONSTITUTIONS are laws that serve as the foundation for the government of a state or country. LAWS are rules enacted by the government of a country.

MURDER – The illegal deliberate killing of human beings. It is a serious violation of the law, classified as a felony.
